How does the 'starter edition' work? Looking for savvy Diablo players

It is true, I have never played a Diablo game. **** on me all you want for coming here with no expirience in the trilogy but honestly I want to play Diablo III as a result of my getting a new laptop. I'm not the smartest person when it comes to PC/Mac gaming (always played game on a PS3) but I've heard you can try a free trial of the game, the 'starter edition', if you have a guest pass that is found in a copy of the game. Is it possible to try a free trial of the game somewheres without said pass? Or do I have to spend $60 before making that decision? Unless sharing guest passes works?

On a side note, will Diablo III still be playable if I know nothing about the story until now? Would a look at the wikis for the plot be enough to sum it up or will I be entirely baffled and confused when playing this? I really appreciate any help guys, this game looks pretty damn awesome and I'd love to experience it!

I started with the "Starter Edition" because I wasn't sure I would be able to play the game on my computer. After deciding to fully purchase the game I went to Gamestop for a boxed copy so I could trade in games and not spend much on it. I went to my battle.net account and entered my new key and the starter edition was instantly upgraded to the full edition. I didn't even have to put the disc from the boxed version in my computer.

Anyways, anyone with a boxed copy of the game should have guest passes to share so you could try it out. If you don't get one before I get home tonight I can PM you one of mine.
