Assassin's Creed 3 Walkthrough

By Matthew Rorie

Our guide for Assassin's Creed III will prepare you for dismantling the Red Coats' forces, detailing each sequence and optional objective along the way.

5.6: The Hard Way

Optional Objectives:

  • Do not take any damage.
  • Successfully brace when attacked, three times.
  • Use the swivel guns to destroy two ships.

Because Connor is the luckiest damn Assassin to ever assassinate, you now find yourself in possession of a ship. Even if it’s seen better days, the Aquila is still a mighty vessel…except for the fact that she has no guns.

Head off to Martha’s Vineyard to see about equipping the ship. You’ll get your first taste of ship steering on the way. Nothing too complicated here: use half sail for maneuverability and full sail for pure speed. Avoid the rocks and other ships, and you should make it to the dock without a scratch.

The naval combat sections of Assassin's Creed are exceptionally fun.

After the guns are installed, it’s time for a bit of target practice, wherein you’ll get to use both of your ship’s weapons. Cannon fire is controlled with the right trigger. It’s powerful, but requires finesse to use, as you’ll need to line your ship up alongside your target and release the trigger so that the shot hits precisely. Against moving targets, you’ll usually want to release your shot a moment before you line up; it takes a second for your men to fire, and the travel time of the shot will further introduce some lag into the equation.

The smaller guns, controlled with the left trigger, are more precise than cannon fire, but have a much more limited range. You’ll want to use these against skiffs and smaller vessels that threaten you. If the targeting reticule doesn’t turn red when you’re aiming at a ship, you’re out of range and won’t hit anything.

After the target practice, you’re going to face off against a few British ships, with some optional objectives thrown in for good measure. You’ll want to use the first three ships to fulfill the swivel guns requirement; get in close, use the small guns, and they should go down relatively quickly, although one of them is a bit larger than the other two. When the larger ship appears, you can fulfill the “brace” optional objective. Wait until you hear the other ship’s cannons fire, then immediately press the brace button (X on the Xbox) to order your men to duck their heads. It doesn’t always register as a brace, so you may have to let the ship fire on you before it registers success.

Actually defeating the ship is a bit more complicated. It will be using its cannons against you, and is pretty good at maneuvering itself into position. You can take more damage than it can, though, and you can ready up your cannons and maneuver your own ship at the same time. Use your full sails to gain on it when it draws away, and switch to half sails to come around for a fusillade. Just remember to depress the trigger to prepare to fire, then let go of the trigger to actually fire the cannons, but issue the order just before your targeting field starts to intersect the enemy. That will allow for travel time and the delay in firing, ensuring that the bulk of your shot will hit the target instead of the water.

DESMOND INTERLUDE ONE

Ah, a modern-day interlude! This Desmond sequence isn’t very difficult, as the path through the tower is fairly linear. Follow the lit-up sections of the path, find the crane at the top of the building, and jump! You have to trigger your parachute when your handler radios you, which will occur around a second after your leap.

With a little maneuvering, you should find yourself looking to make a leap of faith.

With the artifact in hand, head back to base and check your email and talk to your compatriots. Before you head back to Connor, head into the reactor room at the top of the lit stairs that your father paces. If you go up to the second floor here, you can find a path leading up to a metal beam. Follow it, moving around the cylinder in the path, and up to the third floor. Here you can place the artifact and put more power into the facility, which opens a new chamber near the Animus chair. There are two more cutscenes to be found within, explaining more of the First Civilization’s plans to save the world, and further exploration will lead you to the slot where the next battery goes. You don’t have it at the moment, so head back to the Animus chair and return to Connor.

OK I got this for Christmas and have just started the game I'm in the theater and I use Eagle Eye to spot my target and nothing happens! Am I supposed to do anything else? Push a button or something?

I'm still having trouble with snitches.  I used the smoke bombs - but there is still only one snitch present.  There are two during the alley running scene.  But only one during the fight scene.

Is this a specific PC Version bug?  Is anyone using a console having the same problem?

musicallie44

I looked at several YouTube videos - but they all failed the snitch requirement despite having "Full Synch" in their video title. *rolls eyes*

I've reported the bug to Ubisoft's main site.  Hopefully the next patch will see this resolved.

Still - this is a wonderful walk-through.  I didn't even think to use smoke bombs at first.

Found out the hard way that you don't have to eliminate all of the guards on the ship w/ the 2 officers. The optional objectives are granted once the 2 ships are blown, not once the flag's up. Kill the 2 officers w/ ledge grabs (unarmed seems quieter but maybe it's just in my head) and the 2 nearest the kegs w/ the hidden blade (slow walk, tap the crap outta X and bail. Double assassinations seem to get you caught too quickly). The ship w/ the grenadier is a different story but I found it easy to kill the 3 lone guards from a ledge then hidden blade the couple at the bow. It's funny when you place the flag on the grenadier's ship. You'll be atop the other during the cutscene.

How are you supposed to do the Homestead missions for sequence 8?  It's all one long mission.

can we play the game after ending it ???

Titan721

@saudgamermalik Yes, there are two missions you can do to wrap the story up concerning Conner's tribe and what happens to the British.

Ronin893

For the second ship all you have to do is take out the patroling guard and the you can just run up and set the charge.  You just have to be aware of the guard thats alone at the end. I just tried it after failing to do it the other way several times. I just tried it as a joke and it worked.

I saw on one of the recent post about my question and I've done a lot of liberation missions I've got on person about

90% on my side but now I can't find him or any body else's missions what do I do to finish them.

Titan721
Titan721

@sman81  Keep running around and getting his/her three goals. Even if you do all the viewpoints, some portions of the map will still be hidden. Which I'll be quite honest, is annoying as hell because stuff like this. I went through the story with only 4 recruits because of this same reason and after going back and running around some more, found and completed the goals to get the other 2.

does anybody know how to get more assassin's on your crew besides the bartender in this version since its not like any of the other assassin's creed games?

Can't recruit all the assassins.. Boston North and NY North, the lass outside a house and the dark dude by the bar. Yeh, I can't recruit either of them and I think it's a bug, because I've done 3/3/3 (if that makes sense) missions for both of them and they just stand there unresponsive and are not prompting the final recruitment mission. Am I missing something? If anyone has the answer to this I'll......pray for you or something

Tobajas
Tobajas

@SteelPenguin90 As Gianna earlie wrote your sure that you finished all the missions? If not check the missions info either the side missions entry or the animus to see if your really finished. I did'nt know that there was three missions in NY so I at first thought they were bugged since they did'nt show up on the map then I spotted one. Also when the Npcs dont respond to interaction which seem to happen alot. I have to either restart the game or a spot earlier like a replaying a mission before the error. If that dont work I dont know how to help you I do know that when all the NY North missions are done she stop leaning on the house and moves a bit away from there to just stand around. Also not sure who the black dude your talking about is since all the recruits are white. Pretty sure though that all the recruits who were in a bar had a cut scene starting the second I entered the bar when all the missions for it was done

SteelPenguin90
SteelPenguin90

@Tobajas Sorry not a black dude, a dude in black, he's wearing black clothes and a hat on his back. It does say the district is liberated on the map, so I thought it might be the forts, so I dominated them, collected all the chests and paper, saved the starving children, killed the debt collectors, and was it protect farmers? Literally wiped the district clean. I think I might have to restart the sequence :- /

SteelPenguin90
SteelPenguin90

@Tobajas focusing on the NY one, I'm trying to get that done which is why I was talking about that one ^^ lol

GianniBR
GianniBR

@SteelPenguin90 Well, usually there are liberation missions that DON'T appear in the map so you need to find them wandering random. Really, I've passed through this =/

SteelPenguin90
SteelPenguin90

@GianniBR No, that's not what I mean. I have looked around the streets, I have found the liberation missions, I have done the liberation missions, and nothing happens. Really, I'm not an idiot "/

SteelPenguin90
SteelPenguin90

@prime091474  @GianniBR @Tobajas Sorted! I don't know why but after I talked to a man about his family back home in England, I re-entered and then the cutscene triggered and I unlocked him. In NY North I did one of the protect the farmer missions, which I found by "colouring in" the map by exploring, although before I did that mission it did say 3/3 on the animus, and still said 3/3 afterwards but let me continue. After that I decided to finish the game, and I did. Wow.

prime091474
prime091474

@SteelPenguin90  @GianniBR you should check the log in the menu if you still have pending missions you haven't finished... I had the same problem but the female assassin will eventually appear in the map once you've completed all the northern NY missions

prime091474
prime091474

@SteelPenguin90  @GianniBR you have to search the whole area, there aren't any viewpoints that can cover the entire map so you have to go look for those liberation actions

SteelPenguin90
SteelPenguin90

@GianniBR Thanks anyway :) Sorry, been a bit arsey today dno what's wrong with me. Still not found out how though

GianniBR
GianniBR

@SteelPenguin90 Oh, well, it happened to me once, thought it may have been the same to you. But ok, I've tried to help.

Hitman9

how can I recruit more assassins? A whole game I had one assassin in my guild.

Tobajas
Tobajas

@Hitman9 You have to do liberation missions for the different districts in the two towns then when the missions are finished for a district you get a district liberation mission which when finished grants you a new assassin and a new assassin call skill.

if anyone is wondering what to do for recruiting assassins, its a lot different then Rev. or Brotherhood. You need to find the Liberation missions. there are usually 3 different tasks for several different people. EX: a doctor trying to fix the smallpox epidemic needs you to rescue 3 people (usually lying down some where) and bring them to him, kill 3 rabid dogs, and burn 3 piles of smallpox infested blankets. after you do all that you go back to him and talk to him, to then protect him from an ambush. after completing that, he then joins your side as your apprentice.  so keep looking for those liberation mission symbols and the more you do,  the more guys will join you. they made it much more personal for the recruits this time around for some reason, instead of just saving them and have them owe you their life. but there you go. also with almost every guy you add, there is a perk added to your recruit skills. whether it be starting a riot or having them disguise themselves. its definitely worth doing several missions to have more then one assassin recruit with you.

Baroni88
Baroni88

@slipknotmaggot1 are these areas just not marked on the map because I'll find a liberation mission but no objectives are marked?....

slipknotmaggot1
slipknotmaggot1

@Baroni88 when you look on your map and see the free masons symbol, that is where you need to go to start  the mission. the objectives won't show up until you get right up to what you need to do. EX: in one case you need to stop a firing squad from killing innocent people. as you are walking up to them they will all highlight  a red dot above them making them a special kill objective for you. kill the 4 or 5 guys and then the top left of the screen will show that you have completed 1/3. not every liberation mission is the same though, like i said, there are 3 missions of the same objective, but several different objections for the recruit. most of them aren't to hard to figure out. as soon as you get to the marker, look for guys with the red dot above their heads and kill them.. sometimes the dot will be yellow, and that just means interrogate. they can't die, so don't worry about killing them. but you can only interrogate them once you have killed all the other redcoats around you. hope that helps a little.
