One of the greatest games ever made. Remade.
Remaking a game as iconic as Half-Life, using a small team in their free time, and then releasing it for free, is one of those ideas that on paper sounds frankly, a bit nuts. Thankfully though, the Black Mesa Modification Team have done it anyway. Earlier this month the team released the first chapter in their remake of the seminal 1998 shooter, titled Black Mesa. And we reckon they've done a bloody good job.
Black Mesa is a third party total conversion mod designed to utilise the more advanced capabilities of the Source engine. The game launched earlier this month, is free to download, and features all of Half-Life's chapters up to those set on the alien world of Xen. And if that last point was somehow a spoiler then what the heck have you been playing these last 14 years?
To give Black Mesa a go, you'll need to do two things:
- Download the game - Just head to their website and follow the link
- Ensure you have both Steam installed, and the Source SDK Base 2007 (located under 'tools' inside the steam application).
So, how does the remake stand up next to the original? Take a look at these gameplay clips and let us know your thoughts on the game in the comments.
thank you for making this THANK YOU
valve are so F**** awesome, I'm so getting DOTA 2 (seen beta plays GREAT)
@margevich wow just wow
@margevich What? What??!
I'm speechless to respond to such stupidity.
It is a great game so far. They went through the trouble of tweaking and adding to the original game, some of were great additions, some not so. But keeping in mind that this is not a complete game (even though it is already longer than most modern ones) and it is 100% free, this is a game that everyone should play whether you are a fan of the original game or not. And I can't wait to see the final complete product
I enjoyed the game so far very much. While the reminds me of my days with the original HL, it didn't feel like a sloppy copy-paste and the game felt new to me. The game is genuinely thoughtful.
Controls is not bad, just needed some getting used to. Otherwise, the controls seemed to me to be original HL mixed-in with HL2 tweaks which is to be expected. I am also glad that the game makers have infused source engine mechanics to let players work through the game using methods that was previously not possible with HL, so that is a plus.
Very enjoyable, certainly less exciting than the newest games, but that is because everyone (well, almost everyone I would suspect) have already played HL and knows more-or-less where the game is heading from the start.
Excellent remake. Now I can play this until the remake for Carmageddon is released.
If you're having a hard time mastering the jump crouch, which is an absolute must in this mod, you can bind the keyboard commands so you'd only have to tap the spacebar. To do this, you need to edit the autoexec.cfg file located in the following folder: steamapps/sourcemods/BMS/cfg. Make sure the text in the file is exactly as displayed below:
bind "space" "+jumpcrouch"
alias +jumpcrouch "+jump; wait 5; duckON"
alias -jumpcrouch "wait 5; duckOFF; -jump"
alias duckON "+duck"
alias duckOFF "-duck"
//fix jump from crouch state
bind "ctrl" "+normalduck"
bind "c" "+normalduck"
alias +normalduck "+duck; alias duckON; alias duckOFF"
alias -normalduck "-duck; alias duckON +duck; alias duckOFF -duck"
it's great but honestly, this game just reminded me of how much game mechanics have aged and how superior was HL2. It's still an amazing game and the AI is still one of the best
the jump still sucks but y one of the greatest games ever made to date
hl1-hl2 BEST FPS ever made screw hello kitty CoD
This looks awesome. Did they do anything about the way slippery controls, or is that supposed to be part of the experience? I always thought HL could could use a little more friction.
FANTASTIC! Excellent remake of one of the greatest games ever made! I recomend every fan of halflife series(and everyone else) to play this game. Best PC game of the year! Cant wait for Xen.
From first video you can clearly tell its a young gamer playing it or someone who has never played HL2 before.
