Gamescom 2012: We get our first look at the foul-mouthed mercenary hero Deadpool and learn how to be extremely vulgar in some exciting new ways.
Is it bad that every time we see the new Deadpool game we can't help but be reminded of the '90s 3D platformer Gex: Enter the Geko? Both star cartoonish heroes--Gex, who's a wise-cracking gecko, and Deadpool, who's a wise-cracking psychopath. And both aren't afraid to poke fun of themselves, their game, and the fourth wall. At this year's Gamescom we got the chance to sit in on a brief hands-off demonstration for this upcoming third-person action game--complete with several outlandish one-liners from the man himself. We've prepared a few of our favorites below.
"Let's be honest. I'm not the only one with a little bit of s*** in their pants am I?"The way game director Sean Miller talked about Deadpool, you'd think the foul-mouthed mercenary had come to life and was developing the game himself. Throughout the presentation, Miller referenced that this was "Deadpool's game" or "the game [Deadpool] wanted to make." Everything is filtered through the character's exaggerated worldview, which Miller hopes will translate into a wildly violent and exciting game.
"Don't mind me, guys, I'm just here to steal your multimillion dollar whirlybird."The demo began with a bouncy castle. Why Deadpool was inflating a bouncy castle, we didn't know. Perhaps it had something to do with assassinating his target: eccentric billionaire Chance White in his house-turned-military-bunker, or perhaps not. You never know with Deadpool. As the mission progressed, our hero hacked and slashed his way through White's guards in a visual style reminiscent of Ninja Gaiden 3 (sans many of the dramatic camera angels). Causing carnage earns you points to spend on weapon upgrades and unlocks.
"This enemy introduction is brought to you by the NRA. Remember: guns don't kill people, WE DO!"This demo excelled at capturing the essence of Deadpool. His humorous--and vulgar--personality was well represented, and his attack animations were a mix of lethal and goofy. It was everything around Deadpool that came up short. Someone as over-the-top as Deadpool begs to be put in over-the-top situations. But the sections shown looked very tame by today's standards--and we're not just talking about the helicopter turret sequence. Granted, the game is early in development, so High Moon has plenty of time to add in some extra crazy.
"Dude, f*** math, just use all of it!"Speaking of crazy, that bouncy castle we saw earlier did pay off in the end. After beating White to a pulp, Deadpool threw him out a window and rode his body to the ground where--just as planned--the castle was aligned just right to break his fall.
And just to keep things interesting, we were treated to a brief cameo by an extra-bouncy version of Psylocke right at the end. She won't be the only hero dropping by, either, as Miller teased additional heroic and villainous enemies to come. Personally, we're hoping Cable will make an appearance for a comic-inspired team-up, but we'll just have to wait and see. A release date was not teased in the slightest, but stay tuned and we'll keep you updated when it becomes available.
It will have the depth of spit, but then that's what the seal clapping Deadpool fans have always wanted anyhow.
Acting like you know how the game will turn out when you don't, how silly, lol.
@GeminiEntity I know, silly me, basing my knowledge of Deadpool from 21 years of reading about him since his first appearance in New Mutants 98 (also first appearance of Domino) to predict it won't be a super sleuth deep thinking chess club of a game. How positively amateur of me.
Indeed, silly you. Action/hack and slash/beat em up games can have depth without it being the "thinking chess club" type. There is different types of depth you know.
Some of the people below obviously don't know who Deadpool is or how popular he is lately. Deadpool rocks, and if this game captures him correctly, then the game will rock as well.
I'm already picking out songs to play Deadpool to, its hard picking out songs with a ''Deadpool feel'' so far I've got...
Smooth Criminal- Alien Ant farm
Gone Guru- Lifeseeker
Boom- Payable on Death
Deadpool's theme- MVC3
Song 2- Blur
Original Prankster- The Offspring
Shut up- Robert J. Walsh
I do this with most games :P
So Deadpool is a amoral, talentless murderer for teenagers? Figures. Activision made this kind of mindless power fantasy 3 years ago with Prototype and its attitude didn't impress then.
@adam1808 If you don't like it just move along. There are many Deadpool fans out there who wanted more (a video game or a movie or something) from this character and this game is for them.
@adam1808 Deadpool is an over the top comic book merc who knows hes in a comic and uses that crazy to kill marks in creative ways. Plus he has a healing factor so hes used to getting riddled with bullets and blown up.
@rem234 Did some reading. That much is clear. As far as I can tell the main thing that would make this game interesting is the writing. Even so, I really don't get the appeal of Deadpool. Sell me on him.
@adam1808 I think its more the chance to do something really fun and different from the comic book lore. He interacts with other comic book people. Mostly it could be a fun game with the comments from his personalities and how they deal with the fact that he can get ripped apart and still function well. How they handle the crazy will determine how fun the game is i think.
@adam1808 You got to read-up on Deadpool before making those comments dude.
@gzg9jg Did a bit of reading. He's a deranged self-aware psychopath who cracks wise plenty. That's my take anyway. Still not getting why reading up on him justifies why he needs a game.
@adam1808 Do you know who Deadpool is?
Hmmm, graphics look soooooo bad. Kinda reminds me of Duke Nukem. I cant wait to see how it turns out.
@PDXmauler97 dumass, they will be improving the looks as time goes by
@Trishan007 Just like they did with Duke Nukem?
@calypse50 Obviously you guys didn't read the last line of my comment. Im 75% sure i'm gonna be getting this game. Deadpool is a boss and a brilliant character. I just meant that games like these where they try to mix humor in with an intense shoot'em have been letdowns before. Sorry if I pissed on your fandom. My apologies. It was unintentional.
@MajorMichael117Amen to that!! Why people always need to complain about games on the net? Some will like it and some will hate it! They cannot please everyone. As per Deadpool, they did't say anything about a release date, so i'm pretty sure they will polish everything before it comes out!
oh yeah, because this game has been in development for 15 years. how about you take your head out of your ass and let people be excited about one of there favorite comic book characters getting there own game. this game is in such an early developement stage that of course it doesn't look amazing. the trailer is made of pre alpha footage, what does that mean? that means there making the game, not focusing on the little details. this game won't come out till early 2014 realisticly. stop trying to piss in our fandom cerial.
Hmmmm it sounds hysterical, but I hope it doesn't end up like Duke Nukem and yeah it does remind me of Gex from the 90's.
Deadpool is one of the most fascinating character's in the MARVEL Universe (in my opinion) for both the right and wrong reasons.. hopefully this will not be a hacker/slasher third person "X Men Origins: Wolverine" meets "Punisher" and it will truly be something original, its been a while since a Mature Comicbook Character has had a good game, Watchmen had a lot of potential to be a good game, it just came out short beat em up Mini Game almost.. it will be nice to see how they expand upon this character.
@Arbalon " its been a while since a Mature Comicbook Character has had a good game"
Didn't you play Batman Arkham series??? One of the best in the history of Comicbook character.
@Ubersoldat87 My fault, saw it just after it published. Should be fixed now
@Giancarlo I also like the dramatic camera angels. Wow, angels (that are dramatic!), that is really not what I would have expected from a Deadpool game. Darksiders 2 wouldn't look weird with angels or Diablo 3, but although this game also begins with a D it seems malplaced.
@Giancarlo Jep fixed now =)
@Ubersoldat87 "shoud it be gamw lol?" lol
