I only played 1-2 resident evil and didnt finish it, so I am not much of a fan. But this is one of the best review of a game that has panned out in different forms. Finally somebody in gamespot with good journalism. best commentary by far since I became a member here
Danny gets infected with games both good and bad in this history of the Resident Evil series.
Though I haven't played every game in the series, my appreciation of Resident Evil involved several weeks of pocket money. One of the main reasons I bought a PlayStation was to play the original Resident Evil. Later, the deciding factor for dropping cash on a GameCube was to play Resident Evil 4.
These were some of the most unique gaming experiences ever released. Perhaps that's why the catastrophic new direction of the series is so hard to understand. How did games as progressive and genre-evolving as Resident Evil, turn into a by-the-numbers third-person shooter?
The long and storied history of Capcom's series has had its fair share of twists and turns, though nothing quite like the varied critical reaction to the latest entry. The series stands at a fork in the road, but before it makes the first step, lets take a moment to remind ourselves of just how good Resident Evil can be.

I loved every Resident Evil game with a number (and Code Veronica). I love the old school style of the first 3 and Code Veronica, and I loved the game-changing, mind-blowing RE4. I played and enjoyed RE5, even though it wasn't really a RE game to me. Still good in its own non-survival-horror way. It did worry me though. Then RE: ORC came out and I knew it was gonna be over soon. I had high hopes that RE6 would not stray too far from the successful formula and I almost believe that RE: ORC would soak up all the mistakes of the RE creators so that they could get their "please the westerners" fix, and leave it out of RE6. Obviously that didn't happen.
The thing I would like to see now is a complete overhaul of the RE series. I don't want sequels or side stories to the ones we've seen already. I want something completely different. Yeah I want zombies. Yeah I want it to be survival horror. After that, I'd prefer NOTHING else to resemble the story or characters we know. Just like how Spider-Man 3 turned out to be garbage so they just started over completely (even though it was also bad). Different city, different mansion, hospital, mall, or cruise ship, different characters, different reason people turn into zombies, etc. Keep the ammo to a minimum. Keep the quiet hallways, strange sounds, sudden attacks, isolation, and intensity to a maximum. Keep the controls simple and responsive. Don't overcrowd the screen, don't make a multiplayer mode, don't have A.I. partners, and if you do, keep them busy somewhere else doing their own thing. Do not make them follow you around. DO NOT have an escort mission. DO NOT have whiny characters. Let there be some choices of how you approach combat (which weapons you choose to use and upgrade) and balance out the pros and cons. Enemies get progressively tougher, but all the while your weapons gets stronger and your strategy more refined. Have a big boss battle at the end. Leave the story open to sequels and leave off so we want to know more about the back story of this zombie outbreak. The end. RE is saved.
If capcom follows those rules, it would be practically IMPOSSIBLE to not make a huge profit and please 99% of the fans rather than the 1% of fans that are honestly happy with RE6.
Just go back to the ways of RE4. Keep the over the shoulder view but make it scary and intense like the first 4. RE5, while a really good game, just didn't feel like resident evil to me. I really REALLY tried to like RE6, but its just a sloppy mess. Too much action and run-and-gun mechanics are keeping the series down right now. If capcom doesn't realize this soon, they may end up killing the franchise.
Full Reboot, get me back to the days of Res 4, I want Resident Evil not Gears of War with zombies and mutants.
Dude its time to reboot!!! this game sucked big time im starting to regret buying it i mean it needs to have horror i didnt see horror it needs to be more like re4 again and put in all the legendary characters again and the graphics!!! oh god its like ps2 graphics !! capcom it failed you should have made it on a ps3 GPU not xbox shit thank you :)
This actually made me laugh out loud. Thanks Danny. I remember being scared out of my mind playing RE2 in my friends basement back home. That was a great game, but I never finished it. I pretty much stayed away from the series until 4 came out, and even then I didn't play that much. I did however play 5, and I loved it. The reasons I loved it are probably all the reasons everyone else hated it. I won't pick up 6. Aside from the 4.5 GS gave it, its overall Metacritic score is low and it's not worth the $60 gamble to see if I'll like it or not.
The series needs a reboot, but with so many games released in the series it's hard to imagine Capcom doing the series justice while simultaneously doing something new with it.
REBOOT and no more michael bay wannabe just to plz all those noobs new gamers who think they know everything about the series.
And plz keep leon, jill and claire
They should go back before people had even heard of the G and T virus.
and make it like there was a small outbreak and a group of elite police unit have to go find out why there are dogs with half missing faces eating humans in the country side.
Sounds like a good start...
Isolation, no communication, trapped, exploring, solving, secrets, gory, frightening...
Reboot starting with Resi 4, These days, Dead Space feels more like classic Resi than Resi 5 or 6. And thank you for the outright negative review of Resi 6. Reviews with a 6 or 7 rating leave me confused.
"veronica was a worthy edition to the series"? Code veronica is the best installment the whole series has to offer. the next best would be RE4 which had a completely crap soryline compared to the other installments. It only stood out because it fixed camera issues and had a flash new graphics engine. the last 3 resident evils - 4,5 and 6 have had the worst storylines by far.
@chubbyfresh nope resident evil 2 remains the best of the series either u like it or not and its a well know fact
reboot, starting with res zero then work back up. bring back the scarce ammo and health and typewriter save points. Jus keep the move and shoot
I don't care that Resi went action, I love a good action game, BUT if they are gonna do action they need to do it just as good or better than the other AAA action games if they want my money. After playing the demo I saw that the shooting mechanics were sluggish compared to games like Uncharted and RDR, the melee was lame compared to games like Sleeping Dogs and the cover mechanics were a joke. If they want to stay in the action genre with Resi they need to do alot of improvements for the next game cause this game played like it came out 6 years ago. The only good thing about Resi 6 was the graphics were amazing.
ok people don't hate on the series you love change is a good thing if you want it original fine but soon enough your going to get tired of it and want this idea back resident evil is like this get used to it.
Resident Evil 6 was a huge disappointment for me. Just an average action game with a popular title slapped onto it with memorable characters. Capcom needs to go back to the roots of RE4 and branch out on what made it a great survival horror game, like the environment, theme, and game mechanics.
The Resident Evil series needs a reboot, but not a crappy reboot like the reboot of Syndicate. It needs to re-examined from the ground up and go back to its true horror roots. The original games were scary, the new ones are poor action shooters.
can you pretty please do a history on space sims? i've never really gotten into the genre (not since the old star wars tie fighter stuff), and would love to know which ones were pinnacles in it's evolution to this new star citizen shit
FreeSpace 1 and 2 ... best space sims ever...everything after that is rubbish.
Freelancer was an open ended space exploration game with a story driven mission thrown in while Freespace was a bunch of missions thrown together with added coop.
The X series are sanbox games and are more space SIM than Freespace could ever hope to be. Did you even play those games? ...from that comment I will assume you did not.
I remember spending hours playing freespace multyplayer... man that was fun.. remember that before Counter Strike come around Freespace had one of the strongest online communities for the time.
Freelancer is a bad copy of Freespace.. and the X series is more of a RTS not really a space sim
This video sums it all up especially for the die hard fans of 4,5 and 6, just looking at some old RE 1,2 and 3 footage still grips me with fear, I don't know how I ever got though those games looking back, also the game cube RE remake was fantastic to bringing out a more realistic visual representation of the first game, RE Zero was also hugely underrated! I think its time for a reboot, although I don't think it will happen, I think CAPCOM might release a new horror game under a different name in the future.
total reboot, i think if they just go a LITTLE back to the basics, they would make a great game, being alone in a place full of danger, the atmosphere of insecurity, watching the few survivors die, smart puzzle solving, and LESS weapons and ammo, and less fighting less QTE, i mean theyre not super soldiers theyre humans ffs. It needs to lose the focus on action, theres already a lot of actions games, when theres almost a few survival horror. Also different endings, let your actions affect the story for once.
RE shoulda been put to bed after 4. No real survival game should have multi-player it takes even more of the scares and danger away when you have someone watching your back. save multi-player for merc mode only
I love RE 4&5 but RE 6 have something i don't like , for example like to much ammo, i mean if now u can fight why do u need so much ammo ? also the game play video camera sucks, and there it's nothing scary about the game, now it looks like kind of gear of wars. maybe it could better if they only made only one story mode, so the story could be better, and people don't forget that now u cant upgrade ur weapon .. without saying that u only see some zombies around the corner and that's all. CAPCOM sometimes is better to look in the pass and see why the game was so great, take for example what the mortal kombat people did, creating one of the best games in this generation.
resident evil was not just famous for its horror but also for its story and gameplay, the 1st three resident evils were the scariest it could get (cause the zombies they showed in that were the scariest form of zombies you will ever see in a game or a movie or a tv show, if you can handle them you can handle any horror game) so now they cant top that.
Instead they focus on improving the story and the gameplay
I hope you make a similar video of how the HALO series have chance over the years, and the fact that they have totally lost the plot with the history line, that was so great in Halo 1. Or how Call Of Duty manage to capture the WW2 historical moments so brilliantly and now is just a Battlefield imitation... I can't wait to see that videos.. and the ridiculous gamespot scores ;)
@CaesarIIII the singleplayer campaign was original but they did copy a few elements from the old battlefield(the one which came before Bad company),but it was fun unlike the multiplayer which was original and crappy.Re is just a series which was spoiled towards the end.
@CaesarIIII Pretty sure he did a call of duty one awhile back when the show was called Bluffer's guide.
Bloody 'ell, they should just go back to the 1,2, and 3 formula again. Why do people insist on fixing something that isn't broken. If it works leave it and improve graphics and add small things to gameplay like they did with 3. The whole "Jill can dodge a bit and can do the 180 turn" thing, for example. The way the camera didn't let you see if there was something after you, or if you were about to bump into something was amazing. You were always wondering if you had enough equipment or if you had enough space in your inventory, fearing the dreaded backtracking, which added to the experience if you ask me. I just finished playing Resident Evil 2 again last night and there were moments that still had me jumping and swearing at the tv. Resident Evil games used to be fun but now they're just bland things that just exist and don't do much of anything to anyone and at any level.
@MCM078 I really don't get it why several Re fans think that theRe6 is awesome.I'am sure these guys have only played Re4 and RE5.I was able to tolerate Re4 and 5 upto some extent but Re6 was totally crap.Iam sure these fanboys are just kids. After playing Re1,2and3 I felt that this game was an insult to RE.
Also the fear of having to make a decision like 'well i don't know where to go next, it might be that rom on the other side of the mansion, but that's miles away and i know there's at least 6 enemies between me and there and i only have 2 shotgun shells.. WHAT IF I'M WRONG?!?! I'll BE TRAPPED!!' That's some crap your pants resiness right there..
Also they need to stop creating new beasties so much.. just go back to the classic ones and reinvigorate them, they were scary as hell.. having the lickers in Resi 5 was a very smart move..
Open world RESI!! If you really think about it that's another thing that the newer games don't have at all, no backtracking and no exploration, you just start off at A, & shoot the shit out of everything on the way to B where you have a cutscene and then fight something big.. rinse and repeat.. No one wants that .. Peopl want to have their brains engaged in puzzle solving and exploration. Big open map is what's needed and A LOT smarter level design..
@halogem They should really start a new series with your suggested gameplay design. Its gonna feel like a completely scary version of fallout.OR they should make it like the older Re.
Full reboot mode.. I would personally love to see a gritty remake of the 2nd game with free roaming elements. A huge deserted city full of zombies and beasties, perhaps with vehicles as well. But as is said in this video the most important thing is to make you feel vulnerable. cars are great but they draw attention to you / need repairing.. fuel etc. So yea a huge free roaming DEAD city complete with outskirts and suburbs . And a huge creepy mansion to explore. I think Big exploration and slow burn tension are what is needed to bring this series back from the dead.. :I Did i just seriously say that?
