Danny and Mark fly to Moscow to attend the world's craziest pro-gaming tournament.
I'm not really sure where to start this one if I'm honest. I think my journey with World of Tanks began at E3 this year when myself and John Davison interviewed WarGaming.net's enigmatic CEO Victor Kislyi. It was clear to me then that he had mastered some sort of mad, secret revolution--a game that was being played by millions upon millions of people around the world, none of whom I'd ever met.
So when the opportunity came to attend WarGaming.net's global championships, myself and Mark jumped at the chance. I honestly didn't know why I was going--my knowledge of World Of Tanks being so limited--but I knew I wanted to know more about this odd little game, and the devoted fans who play it.
After four days in Russia and hours upon hours of footage, I was more confused than ever. Culture shock may have been part of it, but my time at Ural Steel 2012 was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. I went expecting a massive show that would proclaim World of Tanks as a global player on the pro-gaming stage. Instead, what we attended was a celebration of World of Tank's players and fans, and a strange and terrible journey into the heartland of Russia.
Check out Mark's article about the URAL Steel championship to read more about our strange and wonderful journey into World of Tanks.

@Suikogaiden It almost felt like so, but those guys did a great job by visiting our country, Just hope it could be more hospitable for them!

@Suikogaiden Not quite so. Definitely agree with you about corruption, but this is the problem of most countries, even European Union and Northen America deal with it, though corruption is more common in Russia. As for drug addiction - we have the same rate of drug addicts as EU and USA more or less. Moreover, major part of drug trafficing is transported from afganistan to kosovo (whitch is now controlled by albanians) then to EU. It is our mutual interest to mobilize law enforcements in order to prevent it. As for the poverty, we have discent salaries. Well, about tourist - a lot of foreign citizens visit our country everyday, and you can take a tour to russia easily, our borders are opened. You see, Moscow is mostly visited by businessmen and journalists. Those who want to spend their holidays mostly visit Altai (it is eastern part of Russia). I saw a lot of foreigners there, especially germans, also saw a group of British militaries (had a pleasure of talking to them, tough guys I must admit, they participated in lots of military operations, one of them even presented me his berrett still keep it like relic). Moreover, a lot of europeans invest in Altai, especially germans - they possess most hotels there.
It took me a while to finally sign in and post a comment, I believe for the first time on this site. Reason being is this Horrible video report. I check gamespot daily and loved Kevin Vanord stuff since he has been around, and in general being a gamer since childhood gamespot is like apple product to me, simply brilliant. Over the years i noticed few guys getting employed which I naturally after Kevin disliked, still do because they are not pleasant to listen to, their life experience is soooo low, and stuff they say is simply insulting my intelligence.
Now it has been two years and I noticed danny dwyers and mark's report from russia. Now, I am born eastern european, not from russia, however i have lived there, lived in france, USA, now in UK, normal education and normal head on my shoulders. I am not huge patriot for russia, but still love the country, having said that, I tuned in to see what really this world of tanks was about, found out a little, shame, most of it was two guys who are clearly IDIOTS, mark and danny, cmon, showing usual outside toilet, which you find in number of countries, called food shit, still danny propably is getting fatter as I type this eating some greasy burger, his insult towards developer regarding language, I mean GAMESPOT, you sent over two guys and the third one who I actually liked as reporter even though he did not say much.
EKHM thats all please make sure danny and the other idiot do not show their face, I am 24 and like to think I am well rounded person, and by viewing site like gamespot, I expect to see guys like Kevin Vanord doing reviews, reports and interviews, I almost puked when I had to watch them two silly kids!
Do they get paid for what they do??!!
PS the only stupid fellas on mount stupid ???
yes you know who they are
@UKangelito U insulted ur own intelligence by writing paragraph after paragraph about a journalists Opinion! Its not like hes saying Facts LOL. if ur not a fan Dont watch it n write garbage... You slander these guys but u dont kno them so y talk so much? No one cares where u live or about your experiences but clearly these guys have a following but sadly know ones or heard of you so wut makes u so special? They get paid to be on the net.. u just jerk off to it...
See thats my point, you maybe defend them because you are as dumb as that fat irish idiot, maybe you are one of them, I cant get over insults like the fat fukin irish idiot made when accross there, I mean fukin Irish called russian food, i have been to ireland, know a bit of history and fukin potatoe eting fuckers, fuk you too kid!!!
@UKangelito Calm down bro. there is no need to become Raving lunatic.
And Cheek77 isn't either of them because you would see a Gamespot G before their name.
@UKangelito For the god sake, please calm down, friend! As I preveously wrote I am from Russia and I realized that is already normal to joke about other countries. Moreover I really like Ireland and thier people. Please I understand your concern but I have more reason to complain then you but I still feel calm about it, Just let it go, bro, you will not change their mind - it is just not worth it!
@UKangelito @Cheekz77 Jesus dude, he said the food was weird. The guy from the American team was the one who called the food shit. No big deal. They also wrote a feature to go along with this that is more centered around war gaming. As for the toilet thing, that's a cultural difference. I may have been slightly taken aback as well because most places in the US would have at least a portacan or something that resembles a normal toilet rather than a hole. And as far as the focus goes, I don't think that a world of tanks tournament would translate to a video report well. This is probably the best they could do with what they had. And above all else... This is gamespot. It's not supposed to be something that's super informative and insightful. They have been on certain occasions in the past, but did you really go into this thinking it was going to be serious and insightful? Just watch his previous videos, they're entertaining, but overall maintain the air of goofiness that was present in this video.
that guy was murdering the accordion there! i thought he was going to set it on fire and smash it at the end.
Great video, although I would have liked to see Danny Drunk from drinking to much vodka, which he most certainly was at some point.
Were people really dancing to that cheesy Russian music? hahaha. Looked like you all had fun except you missing the finale =P
Did you see any GTA style car accidents or road rage? I saw some videos on YouTube, people have little bumps then get out and start 'fighting' =/
Next video's a mystery, street racing, street racing, street racing... hope it's that =)
Minor detail: Evil Panda is not a Russian team, it's Polish. I guess it's one crap for that American that lost to them.
This is one of the best videos I have seen Danny do, it's a pity that this is also the sort of video that can't be replicated without annoying people.
@pcty It was rassian millitary sort if food, The rael one is tasty!
@Ortego13 Are you the russian Ministry of Tourism or do you have any travel agency that sells travel packs to Russia?
Not trying to offend you I just find it curious that you are so politely standing for your country like if you were trying to convice us to visit Russia.
@707107 Though I do not think it will be popular.
@Ortego13 This comment is now available at you local book store.
@ferna1234 Thank you! If you have any questions about russia ask freely! Always glad to share info!
@pcty Thank you, I do not even know what to say. But if you have any specific questions about Russia do not hesitate to ask. I will answer, in order to make things clear. A time ago it disteubed me that russians are presented like evil guys in games but now it is even kind of funny. Especially I like those russians in RAGE and their fraises.
@Ortego13 You don't need to apologise and I also don't see you as rude person.
@pcty You know. you are right it took about hour for me to write this. But PLEASE understand that I am not trying to PROVE anything. I also understand that it is a joke, but it always feels like you are reminded about your old injury that was healed long time ago. Sorry, buddy, it is my fault, I do not want you to think of me as a rude person. I apologise,
@Ortego13 Sorry you took your time to write this enormous text I must admit I haven't read it and probably never will, but that is not because I disagree or have anything against your country it is just because both of my comments were only meant as jokes just like the video itself.
@pcty About your question - niether this nor that. I hope you would not mind me to explain several essential things about Russia, in order to break wrong stereotypes
1.Russia is a democratic state, We are not communists, we live in Russian Federation (official name) not in Soviet Union (it is gone, does not exist about 20 years)
2.We have the same democratic national legislation as US or UK for instance, we do not kill or torture foreigners, we do not even bite. We do not possess regimes like rogue countries, United Nations unfriendly states.
3.We are really hospitable, have lots of luxurious hotels with max comfort and different food not only russian. Russia is not only Moscow, there are lots of places worth visiting in different parts of our country.
4.Lots of famous corporations invest in our country and gain constant profit, they expanding their presence in Russia and feel comfortable. They reguard our country as an avarage european state, without bears walking the streets, without radiation polluting the ground, without armed people or soldiers everywhere, without nuclear rockets flying above our heads, without all above mentioned. Because it is a FAKE a STEREOTYPE. Do not even know what to add - about 68% of all scientific discoveries during 70s 80s were made by russian scientists and some of modern products are based on russian technologies. For instance, helicopter was disigned and built by russian engineer Sikorsky. Many of our scientists were invited by US componies and government in order to work for them, that was after dissolution of Soviet Union and formation of new state - Russian Federation. Our country was in ruins it was year 1991, People gained low salaries, some starved, criminal activity became uncontrolled, a lot of citizens and scientists abandoned our country due to the fact they were not demanded in Russia, they were invited in western countries to work there and improve their science, industry and ect. although western states had and have their great scientists and engineers too. So it took discent amount of time for us to rebuild our industry, policy, healthcare and so on. I just want to say that I hate communists, extrimists, terrorists and other unpleasant elements of our world we all live in. I want to live in peacefull world without wars, want to have my american dream like large family, several town houses and cars, I just want all this to be protected from nowadays threats. I am a patriot, but I do not want millitary conflicts, it is better to expirience it in games not in real life.
Moreover I love Western culture, I love english language, I started to learn it when I was 8. I met a lot of good peole from US, UK, Canada, Australia and other countries. Ones I had a pleasure of talking two teachers of english from Canada one of them was and is a professor fom Canadian University. We talked a lot about different stuff like he told me that Starbox is the canadian brand and that my favorite rock groups Avrile Lavigne and Nickleback are canadians and they are proud of them. I have noticed that he does not percieve our country as the one with bears walking the streets, millitary dictators an so on, So I asked him "mr. Bankroft, why dont you ask questions about such stuff" And he said "Oleg (my mane is Oleg, by the way, Oleg Radionov) I know that it is a fake, you can not always rely on mass media. They exaggerate info on purpose - rating."
So I am sorry for this brainwashing shit I wrote here, but please do not judge smth unless you see it for yourself, Thousans of western citizens visit Russia everyday. I live in Novosibirsk in Siberian part of Russia and I used to work in Hotel Sibir as receptionist and I only heard possitive words from western tourists about my city, our hospitality, food and etc.
@bigruss51 Thank you, for support Bigruss51)))
actually Ortego13 is right about it being military food. Thats what they feed their soldiers because its very healthy. Its also used as common food as well but there is much better stuff then that plain dish you saw. If you wanna visit Russia, then I would recommend you go with a tourist group or with somebody from there.
WOT kind of reminds me of Tank Wars on shockwave .com, but better. I guess it'd be worth checking out, esp since it's F2P.
@Arther-la-Blunt They were at a tournament for World of Tanks, do you really think there were many girls there?
I may receive some hate for that...but....f**k it, it's my opinion....
Even if the video was fun and entertaining......I think it was kind of "off topic" to be part of the EFMS series.
@oldschoolvandal What exactly is supposed to be "on topic" for the EFMS series?
@KingofCabal To be honest, I'm not really sure....but I would say videos about games, series of games or types of games.
This was more an attempt at humor than actual coverage or anything about World of Tanks and its desire to be taken serious in the e-sports landscape.
As I said the video was entertaning and could stand alone just fine without being part of EFMS series. My feeling is that it is just here because it has Danny in it than anything else. It's like there was no time to do both, this video and a EFMS video.
Again, just my opinion.
Toilets, strange 'middle earth' text, tanks, mad russian accordion playing skills and a missed final. 5/5 sir.
