One problem, though: I couldn't see my profile with the mobile workaround of GameSpot, no matter how many times I've pressed "Menu", and I couldn't log in with the workaround either. How do you log in using the GameSpot mobile workaround? :(
Today we launched the shiny new mobile version of GameSpot. It's optimized for your smartphone, as well it should be, and we'll continue to iterate on it in the months ahead.
If there's one piece of consistent feedback we've seen over the past year, it's that our mobile site was pretty lacking. Who am I kidding? It was worse than that. It pretty much sucked. We've been overhauling our entire editorial strategy for the past six months and putting a huge emphasis on delivering more opinionated and thoughtful content, but because our mobile site was a little--how should I put this?--"old fashioned," you couldn't read a lot of it on your phone. I've lost track of the number of times I've tweeted something that I'm really proud of that our team put together, only to be faced by a slew of "fix your mobile site, that link is broken on my phone. You suck" @replies.
There are numerous technical reasons for this problem, none of which I'll list here because they're far too complicated and ultimately just a bunch of excuses. The important thing is that things are changing for GameSpot as of today.
We are all increasingly mobile, and we're all reading more and more content on our phones and tablets rather than on our desktops and laptops. We discover cool stories because our friends share them on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+, and we all consume those social networks on mobile platforms too.
Today, the first phase of that overhaul is live. When you go to GameSpot on your mobile device now, you'll see a completely different experience that serves our content in a much cleaner, faster, and more elegant way.
For GameSpot to continue to serve your needs, we had to do something more than just tweak what we had before. We needed an overhaul.
Today, the first phase of that overhaul is live. When you go to GameSpot on your mobile device now, you'll see a completely different experience that serves our content in a much cleaner, faster, and more elegant way. Whereas our previous mobile site was focused primarily on our games database, the new site puts the emphasis on our stories, shows, and video content, as well as news, reviews, images, and walkthroughs. It's much more like a full mobile version of GameSpot, rather than a minimized mobile cut.
As with any of the new projects that we've been implementing here over the past few months, we will be iterating on our new features all the time. There are no doubt things that you'd like to see, and we want to hear what you think. Let us know in the comments, or if you're reading this on mobile (which you can now! W00t!), hit the feedback button at the bottom of the page.
The new site is optimized for the following mobile devices: Android 2.2+, iOS3+, Blackberry OS6+, and Windows Phone 7 Mango+. Feature phones and the Opera Mini browser are not supported. Sorry.
