The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim Walkthrough

Alchemy

Alchemy is one of the three crafting skills your character can train in. Many different potions and poisons can be made with different ingredients. The simplest recipes only have a single effect, while more complex creations can yield more bonuses or even negative side effects.

First you'll need to gather up various ingredients that can be found in many locations: mushrooms in caves, fish from rivers, wild plants, and even the body parts of defeated enemies. Each of these ingredients have four effects which start off hidden. You can discover what these effects are by ingesting the compound (and receive the benefits/impairments); low level Alchemists will only learn the first of the four properties, but those with the Experimenter perk can learn additional effects. You don't actually need to know the effects before brewing a potion.

As you experiment with ingredients each successful potion will reveal the hidden effect used. If none of the ingredients used have any matching effects the crafting attempt will result in failure. However, as long as there is even one match a potion or poison will be made. This bonus will be stronger if you add in a third ingredient that also has this property. For example adding Juniper Berries and Namira's Rot will yield a Regenerate Health Potion. If you added in Garlic the Health Regeneration would be stronger. However, if you instead used a Luna Moth Wing the potion would have the side effect of Damage Magicka. The Purity perk will remove the negative effects from potions and positive effects from poisons.

You will skill up faster experimenting with new ingredients instead of relying on known recipes, even if the resulting potion is the same. If you're skilling up and want to gain some profit as well, consider making potions out of Hanging Moss, Bear Claws and Eye of Sabre Cat. This combination will yield potions that have five expensive properties: Fortify Health, Fortify One-Handed, Restore Stamina, Damage Magicka and Damage Magicka Regen.

Among the most expensive and sought after single effects include Invisibility and Slow. For Invisibility it's best to start with an Ice Wraith Tooth to create a "pure" Invisibility potion, as the secondary ingredient won't matter. However, other combinations will have benefits or handicaps. Luna Moth Wing and Vampire Dust will add Regenerate Health on top of Invisibility, but Luna Moth Wing with Chaurus Egg will add Damage Magicka. For the Slow effect Deathbell, Large Antlers, Salt Pile, and River Betty will all yield a Slow poison; but using the flower and fish together will add in Damage Health.

Because of the sheer amount of possible creations we've listed out each of the 92 ingredients and their four effects. There are 52 possible effects so be sure to cross reference each ingredient so that you'll be satisfied with all bonuses and negatives.

Okay so, I don't know if anyone's answered this or not, but.... If the whole point of this scene is to go through all this sh*t & get fighting experience, then discover the horn ISN'T actually there and you actually have to go to Riverwood to retrieve it....

Can't you just skip this scene altogether and just go right on over to Riverwood? Or is something crucial supposed to happen (besides loot stuff & fighting skills) that you cannot miss?

Just someone please tell me if I can skip it & just go to Riverwood, or if I HAVE to complete this part.

Start a new character and in the first house that you can get your first weapons, the NPC that helps you, waits for you to take a key from 1 dead soldier and open the door..... DONT open the door, go in sneak/stealth mode and backstab him as much as you want.... He does NOT die..... I left there with 44 level 1 handed weapons and 100 level sneak. Character level about 18.  I could wait more to get 1 handed weapons in 100 but i got bored..... ^^

+It's only 50 gold to get to Solitude from Whiterun, and if u don't have 50 gold, then u r spending waaaaayy too much, and only doing the main quest

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there meant to be a word wall in this dungeon? This guide misses out on the shout so I was just wondering if this is a foolish mistake or what?

How do you put spells or souls into your weapons? I just started playing the game, and all the stuff that can be done is a little overwhelming.

slipweav2k
slipweav2k

@YariStar find an enchanting table, there you can break enchanted weapons or clothes or jewelry etc. you break these items to learn the spell, after a spell is learned you can use the table to enchant you own belongings, as long as you have filled soul gems, the bigger the soul gem the more powerful the spell will be. to fill soul gems you need a soul trap spell or a weapon with soul trap capabilities, the bigger the creature the bigger the soul.

Do you have to finish the main quests before going to side quests? or is it just better to finish them first?

hmoobpaladin
hmoobpaladin

@lolgamer73 No, you can finish the main quest and do the sidequests if you want. I always do sidequests first before finishing the main story. It's up to you. Not sure if there are any missable sidequests for completing the main quest first.

OK, don't laugh, please. but I can't figure out how to use the PS3 controls to take and then equip objects. Some of them just "follow" me and I don't know how to pick them up. Some of them make it to my inventory but some don't. What buttons do I push to get this stuff? Before you think I'm stupid, I'm not, I'm just a LittleOldLadyGamer that hasn't forgotten her inner child :)

hmoobpaladin
hmoobpaladin

@lolgamer73 You can't equip objects. Only weapons, armor, rings and necklaces. You can pick up objects by pressing X or drag them around by clicking R3.

Hi guys, I just got Skyrim yesterday and it's a cool game but I seem to be stuck at one section in the golden claw part and it's annoying the hell out of me! When I get to the chest at the end of the tunnel where I've slashed up all the undead dudes and got past the spike door and the swinging blades I pull that chain that opens the iron gate over the stream and then I can only go a few meters into the cave and I get blocked by a heaps of rocks in the way that wont let me go any further. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there something that I've missed that makes the game do that? Any help would be awesome! Cheers.

where can i find and enchanted armor, or apparel item ; boots , necklace, shield ; etc. enchanted with firewalker that i can break. my character is a vampire, and i need fire resistance on my armor.

slipweav2k
slipweav2k

@jolene26 just enchant your own armor, you have to disenchant something with the effect first(to learn it), your skills will improve, as will your enchantment, the more you use the enchantment tables.

slipweav2k

@jolene26 sorry i didnt read you question properly, there is a theft merchant at the college of winterhold that had a necklace that had 30% fire resistance, hope that helps

Doing "In My Time of Need" quest where I need to talk to Alik'r prisoner in jail. Apparently need to unlock the jail cell in order to talk to the prisoner. I have pickpocketed 4 jail keys from guards, but at cell door I keep getting the message that I need a key. What am I overlooking or doing wrong?

Who the Hell is Drelas and why is he trying to kill me?!? I'm quite a way into the game and don't remember how I might have slighted this fellow, but he surely wants me dead and I can't figure out why.

Papajack55
Papajack55

@Lantazan  Drelas is a wizard who has a cottage and if you find him, he tries to kill you with magicka powers. If you kill him though, you inherit his cottage. If there are things that still say "steal," which they shouldn't, unless he's still alive. I was stumbling around and came across his cottage and he tried to kill me, so I zapped him dead with my shout of fire. I instantly got his cottage. You will officially have another home.

Lantazan

.......maybe because I just went busting into his house on a rainy afternoon, but I remember that guy's name from somewhere and the quest log has no record.

I'm stuck on a side quest for words of power.  The area that is stoping me is a riddle of sorts from "the four totums" or something like that.  the door I need to go through is locked and the only way to get to the other side tis to solve the riddle.  The totums must be activated in order.   Each totum has an animal on it's face.

The animals are as follows:  Fox, Wolf, Bear, and Snake.  (Not Nessessarily in that Order).

The Riddle goes something like this:  The first fears all: the Second fears none.  The third will eat the first  and the forth when allone fears the second.  Again I'm not positive agout the exact wording but this ai all I have.  Could someone please give me the correct order for this riddle.

Thanks,  Game_Bastard
