The Final Hours of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

By Geoff Keighley, Photography: Tom Wagner, Corbis Saba

Geoff Keighley takes you behind the scenes in this exclusive feature about the last days of the development of 2001's biggest game.

Final Hours of Metal Gear Solid 2

Editor's note: This story was originally posted on November 22, 2001.

Nothing Is Impossible

Growing up in Kobe, Japan, Hideo Kojima, 38 (Editor's note: When story was originally published, now 48) in 2012, was just like any young boy looking for fun in an era when video games didn't yet exist. "When I was a young boy, I enjoyed games like cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, kick the can, and hide-and-go-seek," Kojima says as he sits in his 6th-floor office at Konami Computer Entertainment Japan in the Ebisu district of Tokyo. "When I would play hide-and-go-seek, I remember flattening myself against the wall and looking around the corner to see if anyone was there," he admits with a laugh, followed by a light cough.

The mix of Kojima's laughter and coughing is a telling juxtaposition that represents both the joy and hardship he has been through these past three years--a thousand days of work that will hopefully culminate tonight, September 28, 2001, with the production of a final version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the most anticipated PlayStation 2 game of the year and the follow-up to his much-revered 1998 PlayStation game, Metal Gear Solid.

Kojima admits that at its core Metal Gear Solid is really the childhood game of hide-and-seek brought to life on a TV screen. "When Snake flattens himself against the wall to avoid enemies, I always think back to the days when I was a boy playing with my friends," he says as his eyes glance down at a bug sheet listing the remaining problems with the game.

While looking at the list, Kojima begins to slowly shake his head and sigh. His body language says what he doesn't speak aloud: Unfortunately, building a game the size and scope of Metal Gear Solid 2 is a lot tougher than calling up some friends to arrange a game of hide-and-seek. "You see this callus on my finger?" Kojima asks. "Well, that's from me using so many highlighters to go through all the bugs. I use up at least two highlighter pens a day."

Today, if there's any type of hide-and-seek going on, it's among the programmers who are furiously trying to hunt down the final bugs in the game. In the main development area, a war-room-like space no larger than a high school gymnasium, 70 programmers, designers, musicians, and artists are part of the blandly named "Production Department #1" responsible for Metal Gear Solid 2. In one corner of the room Scott Dolph, international affairs manager, walks by and pulls out his cell phone--it has the Metal Gear Solid 2 theme programmed as a ring tone. The phone begins to play the theme; you get the sense everyone has heard it just a few times before.

At the other side of the room a programmer looks perplexed, his head in his hands as he tries to solve a problem in the game's code. A minute later, his head pops up; he has an idea, and you half expect an exclamation point to appear above his head, as they do in the game when an enemy discovers Snake's presence. If everything goes according to plan, a few more "Aha!" moments among the programmers will be all that is needed to bring a three-year-long journey to an end. Metal Gear Solid 2 is that close to being done.

As much as I liked playing MGS2, after watching that 2001 E3 video, I feel really pissed that I was lied to. That whole trailer was pretty much an outright lie. Can you imagine if they had done that with Mass Effect 3? The public outcry would have been overwhelming!

@Gjinckxs85 That's sort of the point; we are given too much information on the experiences we are going to have and it eliminates some of the possibility to surprise us.

@Naylord Totally agree. They definitely did awesome for MGS4. Very little was told, the game and story were great, and I didn't feel at all like I did with MGS2. Lets hope for the new MGS5 that we can play 2 player co-op. One person as Otocon and the other as Snake, and Otocan can hack, and provide back up!

One of the best series of all time, hands down.

the game felt somehow dull and ripped off its predecessor more than improving things genuinely

@UltimateStar "ripped off"? If anything, it was Metal Gear Solid that "ripped off" it's predecessor Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Much of the plot and gameplay in both games are almost identical, but MGS was able to get away with it because Metal Gear 2 was never released in the West. This is probably why Metal Gear Solid is the least popular MGS game in Japan, where Metal Gear 2 had been released.

In comparison, Metal Gear Solid 2 was way more original than its predecessor Metal Gear Solid ever was.

MGS2 was one of my favorite PS2 games of all time, although the end part did make me scratch my head.

@Drakillion yeah, it kinda went off on a tangent, didn't it?  Especially the part where the game tells you to put down the controller & get a life

@bakagami Just goes to show you what kind of guy Hideo Kojima really is.  He wants to give us all a chance to get the thrills we used to get playing hide-and-seek or kick the can (my favorite), he wants to share a story and a message, but he's not so greedy that he wants you sitting in front of his games non stop and missing out on the world.  He is truly the best example of what a developer should strive for in their games.

Oh the nostalgia..! A classic game series, MGS3 is still my favorite game ever. And come to think of it, I don't remember getting any glitches in MGS 2.

I feel like we're in 2001 right now and on the cusp of MGS2's release.

Then I remember it's been 11 years and I cry inside.

vicke32

This isn't quite right, a few things should have been added:

Kojima didn't want to make metal gear 2, someone else did the NES version and when he begged Kojima to make a good MG2 he did snake's revenge.

After MGS he didn't WANT to make MGS2, but learning from mistakes he made MGS2 anyway it to make sure that the franchise wasn't ruined. He wanted there to be loose ends. Look at vamp, he walked on water, drank blood and was generally cool, until MGS4. "Walk on water, nanomachines" - random advice meme. The MGS series would have been better without MGS4, god damned "foxalive".

@vicke32 The nanomachines business broke MGS4 for me; while MGS4 plays alright, I kind of ignore what it did for the story. I'll just keep it at "Past MGS3, Peace Walker happened. That's about it."

@vicke32 As to not wanting MGS2, read the article. He wasn't PLANNING on it, but didn't mind it. When he saw how well-recieved MGS1 was and how people begged for a sequel, he decided to make it.

Kojima always calls the current MGS his last one.

MGS2 - "This is the last MGS I make guys!"

MGS3- "This is truly the last time! This is it!"

MGS4- "ALLRIGHT, NOW i'm finishing it, done, finished!!"

MGS: PW - "Who am I kidding....?"

@vicke32 What a ridiculous and uninformed comment. "Someone"? No, one person doesn't make a game. KONAMI made it.

Also, that is incredibly. Not innacurate. Just wrong. Metal Gear 1 was a modest success. KONAMI wanted a new Metal Gear. Kojima didn't. KONAMI made a Contra-esque game called Snake's Revenge. Kojima wasn't pleased with that as it was made without his permission, so Kojima decided to make Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. The TRUE MG2.

I agree with the joke on MGS4, that was ridiculous, but your last comment proved as much to of how much a fan you are. MGS4 was an amazing game and an incredibly improvement over the others in many aspects. The only real bad things I can point to in it are the sometimes ridiculously long cutscenes, the game had 9 HOURS of cutscenes, and the plot holes which were not closed, some of which were closed, but with a very stupid reasoning-- "Nanomachines".

MGS4 was amazing and a Near flawless game, you're just being an a$$.

I'm surprised that Gamespot was even aware this article, much less the entire series of "Final Hours", existed in their website given that these articles had to be either google'd within the depths of "Old Gamespot". Great to see this article is brought up again. Hopefully you guys and gals will shine some light on other articles like "Final Hours of Half Life 2" and "Knee Deep in a Dream - The Story of Daikatana" which seems to longer exist at Gamespot :(

@Bird_Killer I was working at GameSpot when they were first posted! The Half-Life 2 one has been updated as well. We'll be going through and hopefully bringing all of them into the new system so they aren't lost.

What a fun and enlightening read.

Also: "But as I said at the end of Metal Gear Solid, I really think it is time for me to hand the director role over to someone else. I might do the initial planning for the next game but not much more than that."

Hehe.

Played Metal gear Solid 1 on release day and after I finished it a few days later I was like meeeh, it's an ok game but doesn't deserve all the hype.I havent's been interested in the MGS Franchise for over ten years, but at the beginning of this year I saw Metal Gear Solid 2 new in a store for 15 ? and thought well it was so well received, let's give it a try.And goddammit, it TOTALLY hooked me up in the whole MGS Franchise, got MGS3, MGS4 and Peace Walker too. And when I heard there will be an HD Collection coming out first I thought: Damn, had I know this earlier.....and still bought it.Peace Walker on HD Collection is the best MGS up to date in my opinion :D

I knew there was supposed to be more to MGS2. The ending was rushed. still its one of the best games ever created and in my opinion the best game for ps2 with the exception maybe of mgs3.

Reading this article gave me a newfound appreciation for all the work that went into it and confirmed my beliefs that the game was altered.

It just seems like a really strange coincidence to me also.............

@fend_oblivion It is. The original version was pretty broken, so we decided to clean it up in time for the MGS 25th anniversary marathon.

Why doesn't Gamespot write this kind of descriptive writing for interviews anymore? It's one of my favorite things about Eurogamer, and it's miles more interesting than a verbatim wall of spoken word.

Do more features like this, please!

jwhdavison

@Granpire One of the reasons we wanted to repackage this (aside from the fact that it's really good, and we were doing the Metal Gear anniversary marathon) was to see how people respond to this kind of coverage. It's a more magazine-style of writing that you tend to not see as much online any more, but it's a really evocative style that (personally) I really dig, and would love to do more of.

Sorry, but 2001's biggest game was Grand Theft Auto 3

Metal Gear Solid 2 was, and probably always will be, one of my favorite games of all time. I could play it over and over and never be bored. My sincerest thanks to everyone involved in bringing these games to the US shores. I was 13 when MGS2 hit, and perhaps a little too young to catch all the plot points and the meaning - but I tell you, nothing beats the experience I had picking up that game at Funcoland and playing through it over and over.

What I REALLY what to know though, is what was cut out of the game due to September 11. From what I remember reading, they took out Arsenal crashing into NYC and some of the end Tanker wreckage, but I wonder if we'll ever get to see a full uncut version?
