Gamescom 2012: Are you ready for Black Ops II? Mark's got the skinny on six of its new multiplayer features.
I remember when Christmas used to be about train sets, and plump stockings hung over a roaring fireplace, and eating your own body weight in Turkey. These days it's more about shooting people in the face repeatedly--virtually, of course. Come December, nothing will be more coveted than a copy of Call Of Duty: Black Ops II, and a quiet, forgiving family. But just what's in store for you come that wondrous Christmas morning? Here are the top six things you need to know about Call Of Duty Black Ops II multiplayer.
Score Streaks Not Kill Streaks
Say goodbye to Kill Streaks. Now, instead of awesome rewards like the UAV being linked to how many people you kill, they're linked to points. Points are awarded for different types of action. For example, capturing the flags nets you 100 points. Kill someone while carrying the flag and you gain a mean 150. Take the flag home and you get a plump 200. Points ramp up your Score Streak meter, which lets you earn up to two rewards in a single scoring event. Speaking of which…
(Micro)wave Your Enemies Goodbye
There are a bunch of new streak rewards in CODBLOPS II. The Guardian, for example, is a portable turret that emits a non-lethal dose of microwave radiation, which incapacitates nearby enemies. It's perfect for forming strong walls of defense around flags, or capture points. Another cool streak is the AGR, which is a vicious micro-tank, capable of tearing the opposition in shreds with its minigun. While it's completely autonomous, you can choose to control it and bring the destruction directly. Other streaks include the Hellstorm missile, which you can choose to blow up in midair for a wide spread, or closer to the ground for a more direct blast; and the escort drone, which is an autonomous flying vehicle that relays its position and kills via voice, directly to you.
Pick 10 Equipment
CODBLOPS II has a completely overhauled equipment system, based upon a series of board games developed by Treyarch staff. In essence, it allows players to easily create a completely custom class, which, the developers say, doesn't ever interfere with the balance of the game. Every player is allocated 10 points, which they can spend on various slots. The difference in player levels dictates what equipment they have access to: weapons, attachments, grenades, and different skills etc. And you're not forced to take something from a category--how you equip your character is entirely up to you. Notably, all weapon modifications are made here now; there are no longer any weapon-mod perks. Also notable are Wildcards, which you can equip by using up one of your points, but enable neat tricks like equipping three attachments to your weapon, rather than the default two.
55 Levels and 10 Levels of Prestige Please
That's right, there are 55 Levels and 10 Levels of Prestige in CODBLOPS II, but what's notable is that the system no longer uses COD Points. Instead, you get one unlock token per level, which you can use to get new equipment. That means it's now impossible to unlock everything in a single progression, a move, the developer says, that means you always have something to look forward to. Unless, you know, you don't do anything but play COD. In which case, you've got bigger things to worry about.
No, I'm not making that pun-a-riffic title up. CODCasting gives you the ability to commentate on live matches in spectator mode, and adjust the camera accordingly. You can bring up switch between players, bring up a score chart overlay, switch to map view, get picture-in-picture with scores, and listen into team speak with the push of a button. In a separate feature, you'll be able to live stream games with a single button press--something that will not require a high end PC, although the developer did not confirm if it would be coming to consoles. If you've got a webcam, you can even stream a video of your lovely COD-playing face too.
Of course, live streaming isn't any good without a decent bit of competition to commentate on, and CODBLOPS II features a new, automated tournament mode. The game will keep track of how well you're doing, whether individually or in a team with friends, and match you with other similarly killed individuals. Should you consistently kick ass, the game will automatically move you up to higher division. Matches can also have more than two teams for the first time, with up to six available in each match of up to 18 players. There's even a new "Hard Point" mode to get stuck into with teams too, which is basically King Of The Hill, but, you know, more manly. Grr.
According to who will we ALL be playing CoD at Christmas this year? The CoD franchise doesn't have the fall schedule to itself: Medal of Honour, Halo 4.
Only 6 things? My god...gamespot being a fan of COD games.
Mark, you forgot to mention that you would rate this game by 8.5 or higher for innovative gameplay action, new thrills, new story, new concept and new kind of shooter game that keeps coming back every year or two.
6 things that will as of yet never be fixed on COD, especially BLOPS. 1. knife fails, BLOPS was notorious for the worst CQC attacks in COD history. 2. Camping, all of COD has been notorious for camping, it really got bad in MW2 and was perfected in every COD since. 3. Hackers, i bett that since this game is probably using an old rendering engine and old software that every hacker on the market will have a cheat software out day one of release and with no kick/ban system in place they will dominate this game as with all games before. 4. Hosting, ever since MW2 abandoned the server based system, all COD since, even BLOPS removed the ability to kick/ban players and matches have progressively had huge lag issues ever since. 5. Poor map builds, maps should be designed to provide maximum useage of all equipment and force players play more aggressive by keeping mobility to a maximum. 6. Lack of enginuity, CODMW3 was the prime example of reuse of old game engines, the MW2 engine was reused in 3 which was originally reused from MW1 with tweaks to system, so we actually have a what 5/6 year old engine support 3 games, and I believe the BLOPS 2 engine is recycled from BLOPS 1 which came from WAW which also came from MW1 so where is the enginuity there so actually we have one 1 engine being used across the board for 6 games, while DICE has made equivalent games with at least two engines, the Frostbite 1 which went into MOH and BFBC2 and Frostbite 2 which is in BF3 and MOHWF. I dont know the engines that went into BF2 or BFBC but i know it was a different engine. So here are my 6 reasons why this game is going to be a fail. People should boycott Activision, now i know many players here will still buy this game and many of them will complain about all the same stuff many COD haters have been talking about for years.
@madgame23 You've got a few valid points, but the most saddening thing is this: People are stupd. Instead of buying new, interesting stuff, they buy crap they know they will like. And thanks to Acti's lets say... rather subtle improvements over the years, if you liked MW, you will most likely enjoy CODBLOPS 2 (hahaha). Instant money for Acti, a huge slap for everybody else. And the even sadder part: Instead of coming up with their own ideas and maybe getting their own mega-hit, the whole "Big League" of game publishers apes Acti, hoping some CoD fanboys will buy their imitation bullshit. That's why we had turds like Red Faction Armageddon or Homefront. Instead of focussing on the strengths of the franchise (nearly limitless destruction in Red Faction's case) we get what? A goddamn CORRIDOR SHOOTER? Yeah, wonderful idea.
My Six Things you need to know about Blops 2
1) All new perks like scavenger, coldblooded, deadsilence, flackjacket, ghost, and lightweight to name a few
2) COD Casting- Best gameplay improvement since ever... totally gonna change the way I play the game
3) Teamwork, what can I say but the huge aspect of teamwork remains entact
4) Graphics, the enhancment in graphics in the game shows the Treyarch really does care about quallity
5) Environment change, no longer on the maps are there random cargo crates stashed everywhere, and there is no longer the same truck/car from the other previous 4 call of dutys
6) THIS WILL BE THE BEST GAME SINCE MW3
wow, this is what MW3 should of been, it looks almost exactly like CoD4 Future, which is what I have wanted for years now.
Shoot! Yay! points for you! Here shoot those pixels again. Good. Now Here is the same thing with different colors and shapes. ENJOY!
I don't know how I feel about not unlocking everything during a prestige level. I hope this does mean the prestige shop is coming back. I'm also curious about creating emblems, or if it's like modern warfare where you earn them.
If anything, I'm just stoked for the balancing of player's skills.....and yes, I suckass, so this benifits the players who don't only just play COD 24/7.
As person who has never Prestiged, I'm not liking this idea that some things can only be unlocked by Prestiging. I thought Prestige was a choice and not a requirement.
I hope I can just carry around 10 tomahawks and just go around putting in work. And I'm not talking about that across the map tomahawking b.s , I'm talking about skilled, lined-up tomahawks to the dome lol :) Can't wait.
Oh man this is going to be epic. Who says Activision isn't inovative... did you see the 10 point system and all the new perks like scavenger, ghost, and dead silence (quiet footsteps). You know they had to of put some time into this game, ecspecially with the updated graphics. You stupid trolls saying COD is just a rehash don't know what your talking about. I mean did you not see the awsome new UAV detector(it detects the enemy). WOW can't wait for this
It was funny when Gamespot made that video of the Battlefield and Bad Company comparisons. People complain that CoD is the same game year after year, but then shut up once that video was posted.
lol so negative. these guys have high hopes but there were people on youtube doing codcasting before this and thousands of people watch there videos. expanding on that idea is pretty smart. they are implementing smart ideas which i hope makes the game better. but in all honesty if i get bored of the multiplayer, zombies will always be the shit!
is there any way to avoid the campers?? hehe... that's why i'll play the Transformer fall of Cybertron... i'm tired of COD...
@Gusz2 if you watched the xbox stream you would see they actually have an attachment that is capable of seing through walls, but only for enemies that are stationary....good enough for you?
@sky86092345 actually... i think, it's a great idea... because every camper has the same thing to say... "ah... you're a idiot to run around and bla bla" i mean, no matter if you run or walk, if there's a guy in the corner like a statue waiting for you to pass.... this kind of strategy for imo is the kind of player, that got no skill, so he just wait the enemy pass close and shot him!
@Gusz2 The one tactic I can`t tolerate is a cheap camper at a spawning point. That`s such a douchebag move and should be penalized.
@Gusz2 if they got you, then they`re more skilled than you. Campers are easy to pick off if you actually got real skills. Try mixing it up with different strategies for different combat scenarios.
@Gusz2 Is there anyway to avoid the cheesy chicken shit gun and runners that never defend an objective...lmfao
@LatinproX to tell the truth, you don't need to be that sophisticated as you said, it's just the easiest way to play when don't ability anough to mach the other players, i bet you run all the map when there are only noobs right? and i'm not saying that i go crazy shooting everything that moves, but i don't enter in room or stay in the corner, or maybe move around the same place!!
@Gusz2 only when the situation demands it, i usually mix it up but my favorite tactic is Lure and Ambush, but I doubt you know what such a sophisticated technique entails.
pretty sure on fall of cybertron you are going to be being killed by campers to
@radcrab123 not really... have played the Demo on MP? I've been playing since it came out... different of COD and others games, the multiplayer of FoC you lose Health, it doesn't restore if just stand like an idiot :) , you must go after a Cube (energon) to restore your health, so... if you just stay on the corner waiting your enemy pass to shot him, you will be smashed... "you can run, but you can't hide!"
@radcrab123 That`s due to the fact that running around like an idiot and shooting at everything isn`t a tactical strategy, it`s pure desperation.
Some of the new features are great but others just make me feel either frustrated or that Treyarch isn't taking its mature audience seriously. I mean CODcasting? What the hell?! I think it would work in something like EA's FIFA series but in COD? No I'm sorry but thats just too silly. Also I'm not looking forward to the tokens. It just makes things less exciting in my opinion.
I feel GS is too biased towards Acti and MS, I'll be waiting for the first hand experience from my friends before buying this... Way too many killer games coming out around the same time.
Shoutcast.... serisously??? a revolutionary impact??? lolz
You can mix and match as many gimmicks into cod as you want but its still going to be the same multiplayer people have grown tired of
Sounds interesting, hopefully this multi-player will be unique, and not nearly identical to the first Black Ops with some a few new improvements and weapon mod changes.
I love this pick 10 equipment system!
Now I can finally carry 10 smoke grenades into the battle and make everybody's FPS tank!
