Based on my past experience with sidescrollers on 3DS, circle pad.
I would never imagine I'd say that before I got a 3DS. It's a combination of circle pad being surprisingly good for platformers and the d-pad is probably Nintendo's worst so far plus it's uncomfortable to use because of its location.
Circle pad because it's more comfortably placed. I've also got used to using it with Super Mario Bros, Super Mario World 1 & 2, Kirby's Dreamland, Kirby's Adventure and Mega Man.
This. For example, I would use the d-pad on the PS3 controller and thumbstick on the 360 controller. If the d-pad is placed awkwardly I won't use it.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

I does not like touchscreen or face button to play any of marios games. I like to play L and R controles for plating Mario bros. 2 and it provide most comfortable and better gaming experience than any other gamign console.

Possibly Dpad but i got so used to the Circle pad that i use it on everything, Especially Pokemon White.
I mean seriously, have you guys tried Super Mario 64 DS with the circle pad? Especially if the last time you played it was on the DSi's crappy Dpad and no the dslites? IT FEELS GOOD DAMNIT
Location, sure, but thats probably because they expect you to use the circle pad more often, but i have to disagree, DSi's Dpad was worse, it was so seperate and flat that playing 3D world games like Super Mario 64 DS was a chore, atleast the 3DS got closer to the DSlites incarnation of the dpad- Please wait.
