We are all well aware that to obtain some of the better games on our favorite legacy systems we have to fork over some cash. My question to you is what's your policy on buying valuable retro games? We're talking games that are still at least half their original retail value in price or way, way more.

For me personally I don't spend more then $10 on a gmae unless I really, really want it. Anything above $50 in value is a game that I have been dying to play or obtain, however I do have a limit of about $100; no matter how fun a game is, I find it hard to justify paying three figures just to play a game. Because of this I have been unable to play Earthbound, Musha, Suikoden II, and a variety of other very valuable games. Maybe your policy for buying valuable games is different?

Depending on your purchasing habits, it's just a matter of patience and luck. The majority of my legacy purchasing is from Ebay and I've been able to nab some good deals by just finding the right auction. For example, I was able to get Suikoden II for $75. The price is still rather steep, but it's cheaper than the general market price. However, I have on occasion spent market price for some items. I was able to win Final Fantasy II for the SNES(complete) for about $25, but I ended up paying $56 for Final Fantasy III(complete) which is about market price.

Right now, I trying to get Chrono Trigger for the SNES at a good deal, but no luck at the moment. The price for that game sky rockets sometimes.

I have no problem paying 3 figures for a rare game especially if I think it will hold it's value. It's like money in the bank if I ever need to get my money back out of it I can just sell it.

I would only buy games I want to play. I would have a difficult time paying 1000 for a sealed copy that I would not open. Just to have it sit on a shelf in the hope that it would increase in value and flip it for a profit. If can enjoy playing it then why bother spending all of that time hunting and searching.

My money limit on a single game would be $200.00 The price of an original SNK cartridge for the Neo Geo.

NES's Tengen Tetris, I won it for $35 from Ebay.

Genesis' MJ Moonwalker, I won it for $10 from Ebay before MJ passed away. Someone claimed that it skyrocked into over $200 after MJ passed away.

the only game i bougt for a value price is legend of dragoon and that was becasue i really wanted it

my policy in buying games is to just go to flea markets get the lowest price possible i hate when i buy games at their real value

so i just barter all the time i missed out on some great games because of this but i also got some great games doing this but rule #1 of collecting retro games: you just gotta let some go

No more than 30 for last gen. games, no more than 20 for anything before that. I might have to pay 40 dollars for a couple Dreamcast games though, if I can't find them cheap.

$30 is about my limit. If I go above $30, then it is VERY rare and is reserved for only the best of the best games, IMO, like Elder Scrolls games for example.

For retro games in particular, I try to keep them $20 or under, and $20-$30 for only what I consider great retro games.

As for retro-consoles, I try to keep under $50, but may go as high as $75 depending on what it is and what's coming with it.

It really depends on how much I want it, what I want it for, what condition it is in, if I would likely be able to sell it for more later, and how much cheaper the one I find is compared to what else is out there.

I've bought some expensive games, more recently I bought the Dungeons and Dragons Collection for Japanese Sega Saturn, Shining Force CD, and Shining Force 3. I also plan to pick up Snatcher at some point, which usually seems to be around $150. I got lucky with most of my older buys in the early 2000s and picked up games like Valkyrie Profile, Mega Man X 3, Suikoden 2, and Persona 2 for under $50.

the most I ever paid for a game btw is 100 euros for shining force 3 (pal) in a shop here in the netherlands 10 years ago almost. It was worth every euro for sure. I also own other expensive games like panzer dragoon saga, dragon force, snatcher, but I got real lucky with those games and most of them I got also before they were rare. snatcher for 40 euros, saga for 60 euros.

I've paid 50 Euros for Mega Man: The Wily Wars, but seeing now the prices for it (at least here in Europe) on ebay, it was totally worth it. There are some other games I spent 40 to 60 euros on. When I started retro games, I did not want to pay so much for a single game, but as time went by, I gave in. Though even with these amounts I will probably not be able to get all the games I would like to have.

I love how a few people are sayying "no more than 30," maybe its just logical but that is about my limit too. Except I paid 35 dollars (including shpping) for a game called "Devil's Crash," I put it in parenthesis because I am not sure anyone here knows what that game is. It is pretty beast, it literally gave me a nightmare.. Oh snap the game IS devilish!

I do not own a console which is less than 10 years old. The only new games I bought in the last years are independet releases for Sega consoles.
