I loved shining force 1-3, and I wanted to know if there are any more games like them.

Noting, that I hate FFtactics, and Disgaea, do you think there are any good matches?

Haha... As soon I read the title I was gonna suggest FF Tactics. Oh well. I've actually been looking for a Shining Force type game too. There's not many turn-based/strategy games around these days. Have you played Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross? I know a lot of people hated that Cross wasn't really a sequel, but it's a great game in its own right. Trigger is on PSN I think and Cross is still sold on Amazon brand new for about $20.

You could try the newer Vandal Hearts (Flames of Judgment) on PSN or X-Box Live. I loved the first one back in the PS1 days, but I can't vouch for this one cause I haven't played it yet.

    For Console games:

Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. Try to track down the GBA versions to play first, if you can, as they are still the best. If you are interested in Mecha, Red Ring for PS2 and Front Mission 3 for PS1 are fantastic tactical turn-based games. Rainbow Moon is coming out in a bit for PS3, and while it is similar to Disgaea, its RPG/Strategy Hybrid system is comparable to Shining Force.

    For PC games:

Firaxis, the Civilization developer, is releasing a new version of XCOM Enemy Unknown in the Fall. Track down Jagged Alliance 2 and Silent Storm as well. And as always, the original XCOM is the best turn-based tactical RPG Strategy game of all time, on any platform. You need to install DOSBox for running it. If you haven't played it yet, find it and install it right now.

Fire Emblem is most like Shining Force and on the plus side it's a really long-running series. If you're looking for a simpler gaming experience that FFT, try Grotesque Tactics 1 and 2 from Steam or Desura. Maybe even Final Fantasy tactics advance or FFT:A2 if you have an NDS as they took out a lot of the complexity in those versions. Got an Android phone? Try Hero Mages for free. Spectral Souls is out on Android, PSP, and PS2, although I haven't made much headway into it yet. Battle for Wesnoth is free on PC, and £2.44 on Android. Could also try Fantasy Wars or Elven Legacy, but I've heard they have their faults. The Sw&Ear (Swords and Earrings) series is also pretty cheap on Android if you don't mind basic graphics. Been meaning to play Telepath RPG for a while, but not got round to it.http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/327895Apparently the later chapters are better. Check out the Sinister Designs website.

If you can think of any more post them up!

As a massive Shining Force fan myself, I'd love to throw a couple of suggestions out there! I'd hazard a guess at you not playing everything the Shining series has to offer, so going back to the source may be a good starting point. Shining Force Central hosts a fan translations for the Game Gear title, Final Conflict, along with the Premium Disc and scenarios 2 and 3 of Shining Force III. These are all extremely high quality, and all the patches are really easy to apply. The SFIII translations come with a self-patching ISO creator that will create a burnable/mountable ISO that you can either run on a chipped Saturn or a Saturn emulator. The original discs can be a bit pricey nowadays, and Shining Force Central (and especially the translation team) are keen to stress that the project does not condone piracy in any way, shape or form. PM me for more info, if you like!

Playing the Shining series in chronological order (not release order) reveals quite a complex story! Shining Force Central's owner Moogie has come up with a pretty definitive timeline: Shining Force I (originally released on Megadrive/Genesis) -> Shining Force CD (upgraded version of the first two Game Gear SF titles, Gaiden & Sword of Hajya released on Mega CD) -> Shining Force: Final Conflict (Japanese GG title, the translation patch can be downloaded directly from SFC) -> Shining in the Darkness (First-Person Perspective dungeon crawler, MD/Gen) -> Shining Force II (Gen/MD) -> Shining Wisdom (Zelda-style action RPG, Saturn) -> Shining The Holy Ark (FPP dungeon crawler, Sat) -> Shining Force III (disc 1 is available in English, discs 2, 3 and the bonus Premium Disc are JP only, but there is a translation patch available at SFC).

To be honest, there's not really that much else that has that 'Shining' feel. FEDA on SNES/Saturn was made by a lot fo the team who worked on the original SF titles, so is probably the closest thing I've encountered to another Shining force title. Possibly the original Vandal Hearts on PSX (avoid VHII, the combat system was horrible, and the recent PSN/XBLA VH: Flames of Judgement prequel simply wasn't that good!).

Personally speaking, I've not ever really been able to get into the Fire Emblem series, although a lot of my SFC buddies enjoy them. The perma-death thing puts me off. It sounds like you dislike the micro-management that is a massive part of both Disgaea and FF Tactics, so I'd be hesitant to recommend the Front Mission series to you, but I enjoyed the ones I've played. If you've played through Suikoden IV, you may enjoy Suikoden Tactics. Suiko IV is a bit of a slog to get through, but the bonuses you get from transferring a save file into Tactics is well worth it!

    Hello Gately,

What would you recommend to a massive fan of the original FFT and War of the lions?

Still have Tactics Ogre and the original Ogre Battle on my list, although I found it a bit difficult to get into because there were no help files to help me figure out what I was leveling my units into. I guess I'm a spoiled modern day gamer in some ways!

Disgaea didn't really suck me in as much. Grotesque Tactics was amusing to a point, but the gameplay itself was too simple - not enough cool skills to customise the squad with. Same with Fire Emblem.

    Any recommendations?

    Cheers,

    Peter

    Hi Peter!

Two titles I already recommended in my previous post spring to mind: Suikoden Tactics is a direct homage to/rip-off of (delete as applicable) Final Fantasy Tactics combat system, with a dash of Fire Emblem perma-death (for selected characters). The biggest difference is that each character has a fixed class, but the introduction of combination attacks is quite nice! It's a real underrated gem!

The other title I'd re-recommend is Vandal Hearts. Seriously, a great story and solid combat really help a game stand the test of time.

If you fancy insane amounts of customisation and giant robots beating the living hell outta each other, look no further than the Front Mission series. 3 is available to download on PSN and 4 should be relatively easy to track down for a reasonable price on PS2. Eternal Poison (PS2) apparently has a very FFT feel to it, although it's still in my 'to-do' pile.

Apparently, Hoshigami also manages to capture the FFT vibe as well, although I found the PSX version ridiculously punishing and gave up very early in. I've heard that the DS remake eases back a little!

Oh, one last recommendation for the OP: Arc the Lad. All three, in order. They're all out now on PSN, so you don't have to pay over the odds for the (admittedly very nice) PSX collector's edition!

    Hope that all helps!

Just tried searching for the same exact thing on google - "games like Shining Force" and came across this thread..I'm a diehard SF fan myself that just hasn't found anything like it....ever - props to the suggestions that have already been made - I've played fire emblem myself and was disappointed. Disgaea is one I've been dying to try, but justifying buying a new system for a single game is still the deterrent. The genre has pretty much died down at this point, it's too bad. I just thought I'd add my 2 cents for some older games that definitely fit the mold of the strategy RPG that SF fit into...
If PC games are in the mix, I'm surprised Betrayal at Krondor hasn't come up - groundbreaking at the time, battles are all hex based/turn based (not like Heroes of M&M where all the battles feel cheap & insignificant) - came out around the same time, tons to explore and a hell of a story. You have to be willing to deal with the graphics though, which are definitely dated at this point, but nothing worse than SF. And I think you can d/l it for free at a bunch of locations.
Besides that, my other suggestions would be Fallout 2 for PC, when it was all turn based (before Bethesda), or Dark Wizard for Sega CD, which was a turn based war game with a ton of fantasy elements & lots of really hard to find upgrades/perks.
Hope this helps. I feel like the only games like these have run the course, and there's nothing like being made anymore so....I'd love to hear some suggestions for a Betrayal at Krondor fan!

If you have acces to a sega, I would strongly suggest Warsong. I also think Vandalhearts was a great suggestion, however, the 2nd one was not good in my opinion.
