New story driven RPG/JRPG suggestions...
- Jul 2, 2012 6:41 pm GMT
Hey guys! I have an RPG itch I can't scratch and I was hoping that someone could help me out. In a perfect world I would like to go back and play FF 13 again (I understand a lot of people don't like it but that's not for this topic) but short of brain injury that's not going to happen. I enjoyed FF 13 2 but the story just didn't seem as engrossing and the characters weren't as good. Those who have played FF 13 will definitely know what I'm talking about here but there are definitely other games of this type beyond that.
The ideal RPG/JRPG would have these qualities that I am having nostalgia for in FF 13:
- PS3/360/Wii/Computer (also Xbox arcade etc.)
- ****Engaging story with plenty of it (FF 13 had a lot of cutsences and was something I wasn't used to and really enjoyed)****
- Story that develops as game progresses, not where you know in the first hour collect the seven orbs and kill XXX at the end
- Most likely party based and non sandbox
- Most likely JRPG (but notnecessarily)
- Likeable characters
- Game with an atmosphere that you can really get into (good graphics help with this)
- Linearity not a problem either way
- Preferrably this gen
Ideally I want something of an epic journey that's not just some throw away story and characters that you really come to like at the end of the game. One of those few games (at least for me) that leaves a lasting impression of a unique emotional voyage (bioshock type thing but with RPG). Obviously I'd like decent gameplay but I don't see people posting games they found unenjoyable.
I do not normally play heavily story driven RPG's but Final Fantasy 13 really stuck with me because of that (13 and 13 2 are the only ones I've played). The mass of story and cinematics along with the group dynamics and drive to see what happens next was in a rare mixture here that I have not found elsewhere. It is not the best game ever but I did enjoy it in a way I have with few others.
Sorry it was a little on the long side. So my question: what do you guys think fits this description and was really memorable for you? What would you suggest for me? Why? Do I need to try more JRPG's over WRPG's?
-Games like: FF 13, Dragon Age (although was not my favorite), Heavy Rain (if it was more RPG)
-NOT like(though they are good): Dark Souls, Skyrim, Fable
-Already Played: Those already mentioned, Oblivion, KoA Reconing, Demon Souls, Fallout

I can suggest one game that can end your life right now... (it's on PSN) but I don't want to overwhelm you. I think right now it's a good time to play Lost Odyssey(360) to sort of bring you down from the light show that is FF13 and into a more traditional JRPG formula...

Tales of Graces f or Tales of Vesperia are amazing, so long as you don't mind the anime style.

Oh and have you hugged a Zombie today?
Have you played Mother 3? Even if the forbiddenE may be required to play due to never being released here, this is one game that should not be missed. It's chapter based, has a great quirky and heart wrenching story(Actually started tearing up at a few points), likable characters, amazing music that digs itself into your brain, I can go on. It is however 2D of course, but it won't gouge your eyes out. I've played many games over the years, and can say it's just criminal to miss this experience.- Please wait. I think you'll like Lost Odyssey

loved Dragon Quest 8 (PS2). It is cell shaded as opposed to realistic graphics so it kind of holds up. Also, did you play Eternal Sonata? Check it out.

I highly reccomend the Xenosaga and Persona series.
I've played Persona 2, 3, and 4 and they have some of the best stories I've seen in an RPG. 3 and 4 definetley go down as two of my all time favorite games. The story, characters, and gameplay are excellent. 2 might be a little harder to enjoy because of the outdated gameplay but its still good nonetheless. Give it a go, its not for everyone but if you liked FF XIII then I'm sure you won't mind another game thats pretty story heavy.
The Xenosaga series is another all time favorite. Its one of those games where you just know that the creators put a lot of care and thought into constructing the world, characters, and overall game. Also has amazing characters, story, and gameplay. I have to warn you though, the game is VERY cutscene heavy and story driven (sounds like you wouldn't really mind. but this aspect turned some people off to the game). Give it a go. The same people also made Xenoblade for the Wii, I haven't played it but I heard its good and well...same creators so I don't doubt that the game is great. I haven't played it though.
