What's your take on this new Ouya console ?

I'm amazed at the amount of money people have to burn on a donation drive to pre-order a console that hasn't even been developed yet.

Look at some these insane pledge options.

$25 - reserve your username and get a Founder Emblem next to your username

    $99 - get a console, controller, + $20 shipping or $30 shipping if you want a 2nd controller (50717 of 80000 remaining)

$1,337 get direct access to dev team's email and invitation to OUYA launch party (0 out of 2000 remaining) sold out

    $10,000 (15 out of 20 remaining)

    I want a Wafflebot!

What's your take on this new Ouya console ?

I really really want this to be a success but I'm so pessimistic about it. To me it just doesn't seem like a thing that will catch on.

Kickstarter is the perfect home for scams as long as you can write a convincing piece to pull people in.

I think the idea behind the Ouya is real, though I'm not sold that it will ever make it to market. All these people 'preordering' a console are basically just funding the company so they can make actual prototypes and then wander off and enlist a venture capital firm or two to actually supply them with the money they need.

I'll buy one for $99 if it ever actually makes it to production. I will not give them $99 now for the vaguest promise. It just reeks of the Phantom at the moment.

It looks like it was pretty much done to me. I think the kickstarter thing was just to build up publicity and if they are able to make some decent first party games using the extra money, that would be pretty awesome. I do wish I had that kind of money to spend willy nilly.

DRM? Check out www.drmdatabase.net to find out what comes bundled with your games.

Its intriguing in some ways, but ultimately I'm a bit skeptical about it. In any case you can read my thoughts here if your interested: bit.ly/Nt4F7D

I've been thinking about it the last few days and doing my research. Today I did decide to purchase the $99 one with an extra 20 for shipping and an extra 30 for a second controller. I know that it is a gamble, but just the fact that I get one before it hits market and the fact i'm only spending $149 doesn't seem like the biggest risk in the world. Sure its a hundred and fifty bucks, but I spend that on groceries at the supermarket every week. I just really like the idea of the whole thing. I know its not very powerful hardware either, but sometimes I like to sit down for 15 and 20 minutes and play some casual games. I don't always have time to put in 8 hours into skyrim, so its nice to have another console to take some of my time. Maybe its because I see nintendo and ms and sony daily and thats all that I ever see, but finally something new and something fresh. I love games like super meat boy and castle crashers and I feel like this system will get tons of games like those. A lot of Indy developers do not get to make games because its an expensive industry. I think we will see a lot of new fresh game ideas on the system and thats what i'm looking forward to....I guess I do have money to burn, but it might pay out. I'm supposed to be getting my system around march 2013...sure it'll probably get delayed, but finally I have something to get excited about.

I think it's dumb. It's basically an Android tablet you can hook up to your TV and it has a controller. Just looking at the games that people said they want tells me most people are wanting this thing to be something it won't be. They want Call of Duty, Mass Effect, Skyrim, Battlefield, and GTA just to name a few, and there is no way the Ouya will be able to run any of these unless it's a crappy mobile version.

I like the idea, but I'll wait to see what sorts of games and apps it attracts. I'd like to see arenaissance of SNES style RPGs, platformers, and action games (e.g. Megaman X). If nothing else, people can have another box to play Netflix on their TVs.

I agree but I think it's selling point is a console with mod capabilities. A new tinker toy for technology enthusiasts.

Yeah it's a great idea and very interesting, while I doubt it will ever pick up much interest outside those that backed. However if it is something I always wanted a console that is free form a company's stranglehold allowing you to mod it as you please. If only this became big and they made one with the specs of a modern console.
