With the launch of ArenaNets highly anticipated MMO, Guild Wars 2, the GameSpot crew dives right in and talks about their initial impressions of the game.
Bugs, Bugs and more Bugs, not one single zone without broken quests. Character glitches (getting stuck under the ground or in walls etc). A fantastic game if you can look past the unbelievable amount of bugs. And the difficulty of instances and dungeons is crazy. If you are a casual gamer this is not the game for you, it requires a lot of patience and skill and is quite hard. The "Tanky" characters have NO threat/aggro so it's every man for himself. No dedicated healers.... it is far from a mainstream MMO which makes it so good, BUT, it is also quite a difficult and frustrating gaming experience for those who are not able to use keyboard/mouse with great skill. For players who would like a challenge I highly reccomend it, if you want a casual game... play something else.
@BiiteMe It is people like you who ruined world of warcraft. I am a casual gamer I work 54 hours a week and really do not mind the difficulty on dungeons. Matter of fact, it really makes the game so much more fun. See wow used to be hard now I close my eyes and go through dungeons healing people.
People like me? I just said the game is good, I just said the game is a challenge, I just recommended the game. How am I ruining the game for a person of obvious intellectual impaiment like you? I would like to see you close your eyes to play this game by the way. Why don't you learn to READ before making a reply to peoples posts. "People like you" is the reason WoW is so crap... pffft
I really want to like it, but I'm just not having fun playing it. In all honesty, I think this game should have been a free download. I think people are getting ripped off.
This free MMO... feels like a free MMO. The combat isn't very engaging. Infact, I feel disconnected from the action. I see my character fighting and going through the actions but it really doesn't feel like it's me doing it. Also, maneuvering around is very awkward. Try turning while running. It feels like I'm doing a full circle just to turn around.
A very well polished game, but too casual for me. I dont see group quests, raids, hard encounters that require strategy and I dont see tanking. My guardian can self heal and has no taunt skill. I end up leveling solo with a 2h weapon... Most quests on the map are tedious to say the least, run back and forth to the npc etc. Dynamic events are interesting but not the 20th time they happen - exactly the same. And even then you just participate solo with others running around. I dont feel my class skills are unique and useful to my group. Call me traditional but I dont get it. Maybe end game is better, but I doubt it. I was afraid this game would be all about pvp and it probably is. I have to admit crafting is really enjoyable. Active combat is something fresh but something is missing. At least in Tera it is active all the way. I still have to tab and target the mob to hit it, so no big deal... To sum up, everything looks perfect in this game, yet I find myself logging on with less enthousiasm every day.
Active combat = better than standing still combat. Tera introduced that type of combat, and GW2 isn't exactly the same but its still active. That right there makes the game much more enjoyable than most MMO's. Then you factor in what else the game does right, and it just is very solid. I believe that the pvp will bring a lot of people into this game for a very long time.
@trueepower44 And I believe Tera did a better job of it too. To say I'm underwhelmed by GW2 is an understatement - and I was a hardcore fan of GW1. Shame.
this game is the next stage how can you even compare this to wow??guild wars is another level. i played wow for 7 years and gw is years light in front of wow. suck it up fanboys theres a new mmorpg in the block.
Btw i never craft, cus i find it boring and i am quite good geared for my lv. You just need cash to buy better armor.
Grindfest???? omg ppl are you crazy, this is the most ungrindy mmrpg i have played so far. Different quests, great storyline. The pve is just awsome, not to mention how beautiful the world and the animation is. The only thing i don't like are the Norn, who are just bigger humens.
the truth is.... its just a really shit game no matter what you fan boys say. its just boring as shit. end of story!
PvE: Awesome storylines, nice non-linear questing. Exploring maps for completion is fun. Dynamic Events are a good way to level without feeling like you're grinding (until you have to do the same DE 5 times to move to the next zone).The removal of healers and tanks leaves a lot of balance issues. Dodging attacks is so unreliable: powerful attacks (1/3 your hp) often won't have "tells" and attacks that do are easy enough to avoid by moving normally. Melee mobs are a joke. Ranged mobs will leave you cowered in a corner waiting for your hp bar to regenrate. Quest rewards are too far apart to keep you geared for appropriate leveled content. Crafting system itself is nifty, but the material requirements are too high, leaving you farming zones instead of pressing forward (but you need that gear to survive). You pick skills by picking weapons which makes customization shallow. CC effects are weak and have long cooldowns. Every debuff handles stacks differently(bleeds/vulnerability have "rolling" stacks, burn/poison stack in duration only) making a lot of abilities less effective than auto-attack(spamming ability '1'). Haven't tried a dungeon, but I know people who have: Prepare to Die.
PvP: Hopefully better than PvE. I haven't done any yet since I really like the PvE storyline.
It's fun for the first couple of days until you realize how HUGE of a grindfest this thing really is.

This game was put together very well. The commentators were spot on with their first impressions.
Letting you wander around the world discovering how to do things is just like how we we were when we were kids. The game doesn't teach you a damn thing at all. Learn on your own and enjoy what you have learnt to do.
This game lets you play around with multiple builds, swapping weapons finding the right weapon that fits your gameplay it's an experience no other MMO will give you. You're bound to find a set of weapons that will match how you play and allow you to enjoy the game that much more. It's good that they don't expose to you all of the weapons in the beginning, it would've prevented you from finding your feel for the weapons and learn how each weapon are so different from one another. The review was right about how you can go and buy the weapons from the AH/City, but it just ruins the game. (IMO at least) Letting you to feel out how each weapon act was the right way to go.
Not having a quest log now no longer makes you follow a path, instead all the quests are events in ways, you can join in at any time and get rewarded for what you do now. You could be walking to your next Story Quest point and then BAM you're hit with another event, all the while you see 5/10 other players doing the same event, (monkey see monkey do) join in on the even and get rewarded! Why not? Everyone else is around you, so they must be doing something fun, right? I enjoy walking around and discovering new interest points on the map, you just never know what you will get just by exploring the map.
People have to keep in mind that this game is not WoW, it has the elements of what all MMO's have. This game plays completely different from WoW and even the first Guild Wars series. You really have to try out the game before you can even comment about it. I've tried many MMO's trying to find that WoW killer but I've been unable to find it, instead it's made me learn the MMO genre a little better, it's taught me to look for different elements in an MMO and differentiate what works for me and what doesn't. This game is definitely working for me and best part of the deal, there's no monthly fee's and I'm planning on staying in the world of Tyria for a while.
@GameWads I agree the game is very well put together and open events like boss battles and whatnot, not to mention each persons gathering node (wood, ores and the like) are you very own so no ninjaing that rare rich node. Also the fact that theres no real tank heals dps nonsense is great, lets you play how you want instead of following a certain set of guidelines the community set in place.
besides some disappointments i beet it will still get a great score when the review is finally done , the key is giving it some time so you can can understand it !

I'm glad this game doesn't hold your hand. It's fun regardless of knowing what to do initially and you discover and experience the gameplay as you go. A game making you use a little brain power to learn how it works isn't necessarily a bad thing.
@kappamerc I have to agree. I think actually stumbling upon things in the world rather than having everything hand fed to you is WAAAAAAAY more fun and interesting. I'm tired of games that tell you how to do everything. BORING. I refuse to talk to scouts in the game as well. I just run where ever I feel like.
@ExplosiveChorro Hope you're right man, they really need a real competitor not only themselves, so they can get back to do good stuff again with all the money they have. I expect that GW2 stand for longer and makes Blizzard start to think about the competition, right now Blizzard devs are too much self centered, like nothing will never get to them it's annoying.
If in February of 2014 the game sustain a more than 3 millions subscribers I'll buy it for sure. Until then I'll wait, thing i should have done for Rift, SWTOR and others. Lesson learned, no more waste of money in MMOs here.

You know what, I am going to buy it today, I'm to stupid to learn anyway. I am addicted to this anyway, and don't say to me get a life, I already have one, actually my 3 year old is right besides me right now and will watch his dad buying another MMORPG, message me about the experiences you are having and what do you recommend and lets have fun. Fuck the wait and learn.
@Kituco more than 3million? really? why would you need 3million to play? especially when it doesnt have a monthly fee?
I can understand your point about swtor but rift is actually decent and has a new xpac coming out. out of all the mmos released recently rift is at least playable.
you probably need to stick to wow if you have to have a 3 million minimum player base. heck by 2014 wow might not have 3 million subs.
For the price of the game and no sub. You are missing out. GW had a big following and most people don't know that. I don't see it fizzling anytime soon.
@Kituco theres no subscription fees,. so--- no subscribers,. just buy the box no other fees unless they make expansions,. so not as risky as swtor,. this game offers more than most subscription games ive played like tera or swtor. i foresee success like the gw1

@z706 Could be if it was a beer, but MMORPGs have patches and/or expansions so after 1 and half years, not half year, we'll know if it stood, like not so much games did, I just don't want to buy a game that's supposed to live through this time and just get disappointed by it because it dyed after less than a year, a MMORPG is not a simple MMO like a FPS MMO, its something that you expect to go over what happened when it launched expand the horizons, bring new possibilities, new classes, new races, new maps, and thus far so actually if Guild Wars 2 sustains the fun and bring more contents and so in the next year and half it will show that it is a great new MMORPG and came to stay, until then its all speculation from reviewers and enthusiasm of the first glance in the game from fans, a MMORPG has no end to be announced, that's is the principle of it, if the game came out with an expiration date on it, then its not a MMORPG its just another generic game to pass on so you can wait and buy it cheap just to play it out like the generic MMOs out there,and they do taste like a week old opened beer.
@z706 BTW I started playing a certain MMORPG in it's2nd year on the market back in 2006, and it is still there and I did not felt like I was drinking a week old opened beer when i started playing it. Not comparing the games, just saying that the 1 and half year should not be a problem to the game if its made to stay.
I actually felt the lack of direction was refreshing for once. Everyone bitched because their Ranger didn't start out with a bow and they couldn't figure out how to get one. Well, isn't it a right of passage for a Ranger to EARN a bow and find it on his own? That's part of the immersiveness that games need to have nowadays. If I started out with the weapon I wanted, I may not have tried any other weapon first. And a note telling me where to find one, would have felt arcaic and dumb.
@lazarius12 Personally I find this counter-immersive. I'm pretty sure in any world you end up in, it wouldn't be the greatest secret to know WHERE are the weapons available. It's a BOW not some secret device! Game developers have to be more creative than that when it comes to "earning" something in games, especially MMO's.
@the_best_sarek @lazarius12 To be fair, real life doesn't have a disembodied head floating above you, telling you how to get to the grocery store, so that you don't starve to death. So learning to ask around about how to find a bow can be part of the game and it's really not that hard to find anyway. I understand not everyone can be immersed in the same way, nor do they want to be at all. However, personally, I don't want a random message popping up, telling me where to go and when to go there all the time. Games don't HAVE to be immersive all the time, but they also don't need to be "gamey" either.
@the_best_sarek @lazarius12 while i agree somewhat but,. if u actually play guild wars2 u notice almost immediately that diferent weapon types have diferent skill sets and gettin a bow isnt rully hard at all. so i think it opens up those other skills by starting off with an unexpected weapon. same thing for elementalist i wound up equiping a dagger and all my skills changed based on the weapon type to be close ranged and stealthy.
Hey guys, id hate to say this but im kinda getting bored of GW2 already, Got to lvl 42 and just getting very bored, the events i feel are now kinda more a drag now than enjoyment, dunno why its kinda similar to me getting bored of the dialog in SWTOR. I logged off earlier and played Battlefield.
Problem with people like you is you rush through the game and then comlain there is nothing to do.
