I mean I kind of like this game--the art design and the way the world looks is unique and fun (if you never played Fable). I like running around Amalur doing quests, but the storyline is so awful. I knew it was a Salvatore story when in the opening video we were introduced to a maniacally cackling villain. He is a such a hack.
I'd take about any crappy fantasy writer over him. Terry Brooks, Goodkind (yeah I'm serious--I'd take evil chickens over Salvatore crap), just about anyone.
In my opinion he really held this project back. And why he decided to copy such a crappy game as Fable I'll never know. I had so much hope for this game.

Salvatore's had an interesting run. His Icewind Dale trilogy really evokes the vibe of D&D like few books have. You could tell that he was a young writer who didn't have the best chops, but his enthusiasm was evident and made the books a fun read.
Then came the Dark Elf trilogy, which piled layers and layers of angst on whenever possible. However, it introduced a few cool characters and was overall okay. Each subsequent cycle of books just gets worse and worse, piling on comical levels of angst, turning everyone into giant mary sues, and just overall becoming garbage. The young, enthusiastic writer was gone, and in his place was a writer whose prose was perhaps a bit better but clearly no longer cared. He was sticking to a formula which he knew would make him money, but even the most die hard fans started to get burned out.
Then came the 4th Edition rule set, which D&D authors needed to follow. It became a logistical nightmare and he had to kill all of his non-elf characters in one bloated, terrible book. His work in Kingdoms of Amalur reeks of late-era Salvatore; utterly soulless.
All in all, he had a promising start, but should have broken free from the series that gave him that start. It you don't flex your creative muscles they atrophy. Modern Salvatore is undoubtedly a terrible writer.

I read somewhere (When this company had its falling out) that Salvatore was writing the lore and the story for the MMO Copernicus, and that he had nothing to do with this story just the setting.

TC, Salvatore did not wright the story for this game he was working on the MMO. I enjoyed Salvatore work as a teenager but I cant read his stuff anymore im 35 now. Im not sure he would have given us a story better than the one we have right now.

I'm 33 and a friend who is like 40 swore up and down I should read the Crystal Shard if he was going to try this new "George Martin" thing. So I tried the Crystal Shard and was astounded at how bad it was. Of course, if I'd been 15 when I read it I might have found it phenomenal.
I just love how Salvatore's villains are so..."mwahahahaah!" Just like the villain in the opening video of Amalur. In fact, the enemies were so easily beaten in the Crystal Shard because they were complete idiots. There are compelling villains in stories who are so arrogant that they lose, I like that kind of complex character, but the villains in the Crystal Shard were so arrogant they became idiots and imbeciles.
Anyway, the game is fun so I guess I can't complain too much. I just don't get the "I can't believe this game failed with talent like Salvatore behind it" sentiment I see so often.

Well according to Wikipedia ...
"R.A. Salvatore worked as Creative Director for 38 Studios, formerly named Green Monster Games, along with pitcher Curt Schilling and Spawn comic creator Todd McFarlane. He was responsible for the story and dialog for the game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, which received praise for the storyline."
This was based on this article:

I'm in the same boat. Read his books as they were being released. Sometime around college (mid-to-late 90s) I realized that his work was crap and I haven't gone back since.
If I had more time, I would go back and re-read Icewind Dale. Would be interesting to see if he was always as crappy as I now think he is.

The story is not the best in the world of video gaming but it certainly not even close to the worst this industry has heaved up. I think that if the MMO would have come out more of this game would then make sense and the story would have more context and give more substance to the things we have been introduced throughout the parts of Amalur we have been.

David Gaider, Timothy Zahn, Karen Traviss, and the authors of X-Wing > any Salvatore.
Steven King did a great job with Eyes of the Dragon too.

I'm in the same boat as a few of you, I'm 37, read him a ton as a teenager. Even back then the only reason we picked up any of Bobs books was because nobody wrote better battle sequences.

I havn't started the game yet but I can agree with this completely. Salvatore is way overrated. Still I enjoyed the demo and the art style so I expect I will enjoy KoA weather the story is good or not.
