So this thread:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/256525-legend-of-mana/62100013Has the translations for the various personalities listed, which is great!
But how are the various personalities reflected in combat, in a generalized sense? Everyone knows how Friendly & Lonely work because of the Polter Box thing, but how do the others perform?
From the other thread, sounds like:
- Aggressive is probably the one everyone wants, your monster is more likely to rush in & fight the enemy at close range
- Arrogant is kind of the same, but only in so much that your monster is more likely to rush up to the enemy
- Calm sounds like the monster will be more likely to avoid close range combat, staying at mid range - is this the best personality for monsters using ranged attacks (like Chobin Hood)?
- Indecisive & Scheming sound mostly the same as well - short/mid range variants aside, the monster decides how it wants to attack? Does it not do that anyways? With Indecisive having the added bonus of your monster LESS likely to attack?
- Lazy just sounds awful, should this ever be used? Monster is more likely to idle? Maybe if you wanted your monster to stand still to regen his own HP?
- Friendly & Lonely, we all know, your monster is more likely to stay near the hero
I have four monsters and a ton of produce, I am gonna do some testing of the personalities (the ones I had planned to add anyways, I may not test Lazy for example). I'm fairly familiar with how they act with no personality, though I'll get re-familiar with each monster's attack patterns and then add a personality, take them out again & see if they actually do act differently.

So far:
Added Aggressive to an Ape Mummy. I took him out before adding the personality, and then afterwards, and he was definitely throwing more punches when Aggressive had been added. So so far, this trait (at least in this case) is working out they way you would expect.
Added Friendly to a Wooding. This may not be the best monster to use for this one, but anyways. During both the before and after battles, it didn't seem like he was actively trying to move towards me all that much. He did seem to be standing still a lot, maybe it's just a trait of this monster type? I have no idea.
Next up is, I'm gonna add Scheming to a Sand Scorpion and see how it affects him. I noticed in the before-battle, he seemed to favor close range scissor "circular slash" attacks. Will his attack pattern be much different afterwards? We'll soon find out, as soon as I can get Scheming on him (Orange'opus & Loquat-Shoes haven't added anything yet, gonna try a Bellgrapes).

Got Scheming on the Sand Scorpion - I was actually pretty pleased here too, I tried to keep the enemies attacking at a mid range distance, and he used all three of his range attacks on the cluster often (though some attacks are more useful than others). Even when I had to duck out from the pounding to regen my life, and they swarmed him, he still used the scissor circle-slash attack pretty often! So I would say adding Scheming hasn't been a disappointment.
Trying to add Arrogant to my Land Dragon now, we'll see how it might be different from Aggressive at all.

From what I understand, the priority of a friendly monster is to attack opponents
that are in a specific range.
Only if it's not the case will it then consider to go back to you.
It's the reverse of Lonely which will go to you regardless of what is happening in the battle.
From what I understand, Aggressive is more effective than Arrogant.
An arrogant monster seems to have more chance of wasting time
if the opponent is not close.
It has a chance of closing it but that's it.
The Aggressive monster will close in too and is also less likely to go back.
It will choose to use certain attack at close range too and is more likely to attack.
Indecisive looks more or less like a ranged Scheming although somewhat less effective?
However, Indecisive is really a worse Calm.
Anyway, that's what I understand from the description.
If you have more finding, please share them with us. ^^
Also, I would like to here how Aggressive, Calm, Indecisive and scheming affect
which attacks/attack methods are chose.
