Eric Neigher dives deep into the psyche of this indie survival horror game, Lone Survivor.
Did anyone else think he looked like he had a massive ear to ear grin on his face the whole time before you realised it was a mask?
Am playing the game now and am finding it really intense, the developers have made a real experience out of this game. Solid stuff
Lol, Sorry but I didn't pay 4k for my rig to play a game with huge 2d block graphics like we used to see on the old Commodore 64 games.
@jasonr71 So you'll pass up on an excellent game because its in 2D? Thats sad dude. Real sad because you'll be passing up so many great games.
There are plenty of games to push your system so why worry about passing up this one? :S
@jasonr71 you are a 14 year old boy who thinks graphics are the only thing in a game. you are an idiot
Bought this game today of steam, and I must say I am enjoying it. It really is an eerie game thats more psychological than anything. The survival elements are very cool. However like Kevin said the map system is poor. Overall i'm enjoying it and can't wait to see whats really going on.
I must say. I posted this comment before I clocked the game. When you get use to the map system, it actually makes sense and works really well. So I take back that little comment. Peace
Chess has those silly little pieces and that simple board... why would anyone want to play that? Some games don't need virtual reality and destructable environments to be fun to play. Try *real* reality - go outside :D (Remember "Adventure?")
Cheers, -D
I find the people commenting about bad graphics very odd :S For a start the graphics are a fantastic example of 2D sprite graphics. Well constructed and detailed, nicely animated and set the tone perfectly and does all that without getting in the way of the psycological experience.
If youre passing this game up because of the graphics then I feel sorry for you, games like this dont come about all that often now.
The game's on the Humble Bundle for the next week (go to humblebundle(dot)com). If you pay $7.88, you get this, Bastion, Super Meat Boy, Limbo, Psychonauts, and Superbrothers.
I actually already own Bastion and Limbo but I'm about to pick this up. Never did play Psychonauts and this game and Superbrothers look really cool.
@quaker04 Because 1- THis is a indie game so no money for paying a license to use some graphic engine like unreal or valve.
2- Because the maker wants you to play the game and focus in other things like how fun it is and the story. Look and the last Resident evil, nice graphics, bad game.
@SsangyongKYRON Play it on you humble PC, your console is not gonna get jealous for playing this on you laptop. Some people are just so selfish that wants game makers port games to their consoles instead of using the f**** laptop, without thinking on the cost of the port to the maker, or how many $ony or Micro$oft gonna charge for using its store. Console stores are not so friendly with indie games...
@orochi_kyo How are console stores not beneficial to the developers? If anything they are a God-send! Not everyone uses their PC's for gaming these days. Some people still don't have them....
Waiting for an XBox live or PSN release is not selfish at all. In the long run the developers are still getting your pennies, it may cost them a bundle to port them, but they wouldn't do it if they wanted people to experience them more. It just makes the games easier for everyone to play.
Most developers dream about getting their games on Xbox Marketplace, because they know people will want to play it.
I highly doubt Spelunky or Minecraft would have nearly as much sales as they do without the Marketplace.
If people want to wait for a specific game to come out, let them!
I bought Retro City Rampage originally for Xbox live. Now I have it on PC and PSN too. So, is that being "selfish" towards Brian Provinciano, because I waited for the Xbox one first? No, now he's got my cash three times.
Point is, developers spending a bit of money so their fans can choose what to play their games on is no wrong doing...
There's a lot of fuss about this game score it seems, particularly about the graphic. I agree that graphic in game is one of the important factor. But whose to decide the criteria of a good graphic? The more realistic the better? This could be true if this game is a first-person shooter genre where enviroment needs to looks very realistic. Would this game still get an 8.5 if the graphic is as good crysis and it ditch the 2D? Graphic needs to conveyed the games mood and feelings and they choose this kind of graphic for this particular game.
@Whitebloodsun the graphic is just an element of the game that contributes for a a better gaming experience, and that is basically the illusion that it creates. the sh*tty pixelated graphics that are trendy lately are nothing more than hipster bs, that shatters the illusion of reality. being aware all the time that you are playing 90"s nintendo game is not much of a gaming experience. i agree that the more realistic is not always better (take limbo for example), but this kind pixelated graphics is just a deal breaker. you might think that it is cool, but actually it's just crap.
You need to explain what you meant by "illusion". I want to avoid misunderstanding.
You wrote: "the sh*tty pixelated graphics that are trendy lately are nothing more than hipster bs,"
The entire comments that I wrote two months ago was strictly related to Lone Survivor graphic and scores. I had no interest in the current 2D trends.
Even if pixelated graphics has become a trend and in your opinion it's nothing more than hipster bs, it still doesn't change the fact that the graphic suited perfectly with Lone Survivor atmosphere and that LS is a great game.
IMO, the "being aware that you are playing 90"s nintendo game isn't much of a gaming experience" sounds more like a personal issues.
You wrote: "you might think that it is cool, but actually it's just crap."
Such strong words for a personal opinion.
Hrm...well, you might think that LS is crap, but actually it's awesome.
I don't like poeple bashing a game just because it used 2D graphic. However, I'm not fond of the current trends either.
@Whitebloodsun all i'm saying is that the game would benefit from a better (more realistic) graphic. 2D graphic is fine, and i love 2D graphic games. just the pixelated 2D graphic is problematic for me. it is like using a dial up connection in 2012 because it's cool, not because it's better.
@Whitebloodsun I actually like the retro graphics in this game. I think there are a lot of younger gamers that never played DOS games. Don't think they realize it intentionally looks like an old school game.
I agree with you. Even if they could afford Crysis caliber graphics, it would lose all of its charm.
But, I told him that it's a different games with a different genres and a different gameplays. He didn't accept that point. So I ask him, should we make a rule that said the max score limit for an RPG games like Skyrim is 10, while the maximum score for a game like this can't be more than 6.0? So there's a hierarchy between game genres?
So that this kind of games will always remained 6.0 no matter how good and how much enjoyment it gave us just for the simple logic that there's nowhere this kind of games could be near Skyrim?
He didn't answer.
Secondly, are games quality is made purely with graphic alone? What happens to gameplay, storyline, music background, enjoyment and other equally important things? Should we judge a games based on this things too?
Btw, my friend said that Skyrim got a 9.0 and Lone Survivor got an 8.5 which sounds to him rather silly considering the gap is just a 0.5 while the (again) graphic between them is a huge contrast.
Independent games become much better then huge company games wich develop almost nothing then neverending first person shooters for preteens
could have scored a perfect 10 if it was released 15 years earlier but that doesn't mean it sucks.there are some old school games which i'm still fond of such as metal slug.
It has what Silent Hill hasn't for many many years, teh big boys need to sit up and listen to the indie devs
Graphics do not always equal fun. Believe it or not, some games do not require ground breaking graphics to hold their weight. Eye candy is nice, but shouldn't define your gaming experience as a make or break feature. Aesthetics are only part of the experience.
Also, I rather like the 2D sprites presented in Lone Survivor. It's not necessarily graphically bad, but artistically relevant. =]
so this is what they are turning my pc gaming in to,why did they just gave it a 9 like that other piece of sh-t,so as long as the game have a great story and music it will get a high score so no need for great ground braking next Gen grafix ok.
@Cataclysmm Yes, there is no need for great ground breaking next gen graphics. I think the openness of the PC platform should be embraced instead of shunning small ONE man developed gems like this because people want the next big bombastic thing. I think it's great, personally, because once I am done with the little games like this, I can still turn to the big ones on the same platform =)
This game looks amazbuttz...... who would have thought the most legit horror game in a while would be 2D....hope its randomly on sale on steam
at first i thought the character was smiling the whole time. then i realized he's wearing a sergeon's mask

@ares_dc wow that's great just saying a game is crap and you didn't even try it. nice one
@ares_dc Shouldn't you be farming for gear? and killing 100 of the same monster all over again? piss off with that crappy copypasted genre, gamespot doesn't have a section for it because is the same game with a different skin
@ares_dc IGN reviewed this game, too, and gave it 85/100. That's the exact same score Gamespot gave it. The metascore is 82/100. Nearly identical.
If you want to be closed minded and not give this game a chance, no one is forcing you to buy it. The whole idea of this site is to check out different games and see which ones you might like. You don't think you'll like this one? Fine. Move on to the next one. You don't need to write a manifesto. Nobody cares and few will read it. The same goes for your choice of gaming websites. You don't like this one? Fine. Move on to the next one. Nobody cares.
@ares_dc Why not review serious games you ask. Because it's GAMES, there are no serious games, and just like movies or any other form of leisure time activity peoples taste differs. In my opinion this game seems cool.
