To me it looks like the original Mario Tennis with more minigames and cheap wins.

It actually really isn't as bad as he makes it sound, although don't use the gyro on the bus or else you'll look like a madman.

This review seems fair. It's a shame. Mario Tennis for the 64 was one of the best sports games I've ever played. I am of the opinion that Skyward Sword was a 10 though. Really, that game was wonderful.

It's not just Nintendo fanboys who feel that way. I play Nintendo games quite rarely.

I bought the game and I have played it well over 10 hours (single and multiplayer combined), and it is not that bad (uninteresting or mediocre) as the reviewer make it sound. I think his word of the day was "rigid"... way to over use it.

- Yes, the game is repetitive (not in a bad way, at least for me), but what else can we hope to see from a sports games, even if it is from a realistic sport franchise... it is going to get the same no matter what.

- If you want to get all the items, goodies and characters, then there is a lot of grinding to do; but what good game does not have it... besides I rather grind to unlock characters, items and goodies, rather than paying for them.

- The 4 mini games actually reinforces the use of the different technique/skill shots in order to obtain more coins or beat the level, so they are not that simple as he make it sound.

- I don't know about his 3D settings, but the game has good 3D depth.

- I think the multiplayer is where the game really shines (local or/and random online).

- About the gyro controls, I do agree in some aspects with him, but the controls are not "convoluted" at all; The controls are even simpler than using the circle pad since you do not control the character.

- I agree with him with the StreetPass Mii matches... the A.I. of the Mii you meet on StreetPass it is not the greatest... hopefully, as you meet the same Mii character more times, his/her A.I. level will increase...... Also, he forgot to mention that there is another mini game involving StreetPass.

- I think he contradicts himself pointing that there is not super moves per character, but the "charge moves" act as those super moves, besides in my opinion, this was a good thing since players do not have to waste time waiting for the super move animation to finish knowing that there is 90%+ chance that the outcome will be the same.

The game in my opinion (and using GameSpot scoring standards) is not Mediocre, or neither should have a Great to Prime score. I think this game has good potential to be rated between Fair and Good score., but that is just my opinion.

thats why is better to listen to reviewers of actual players instead of shallow "professional"

Yeah...I've never been a fan of Mario Tennis ha ha. In fact I only like sports games that are going for realistic. That said I think maybe the Mario soccer game would have been a better choice of a sports game to make.

Pong with mario characters as the paddles... Weak!  and I like mario sports games generally.

if its really that bad, then why bother playing for 11 hours??

The reviewer obviously didn't play through every tournament because the last four tournaments actually require skill.

DeViLzzz

@LikeToySoldiers yes but if you have to play garbage tournaments forever for no reason it is dumb

mistablair

@DeViLzzz You only have to play through the first few. After you beat a tournament you can start your character at the top cup in order to get the "star" ability.

This game looks fun but stupid.  Its freaking tennis, who cares.  Looks like they spend a lot of resources making this....why couldnt they make a normal mario game instead?  Why just hit a ball back and forth...BORING!

WillyChong

@TheJeffness69 Well, any game with the BIG MARIO Stamped on it is a good way to make money, i thought its completely rational and a trend followed by Nintendo all these years since its foundation......

Looks more fun than the press power shot to win mechanic in Mario Tennis on the Wii.  All you had to do was press your power shot from anywhere on the court to return the ball.  How boring.

Honestly, this game did not really offer anything special from what I have seen. I do like Mario games, but they could have put more content in this one.

Why didn't they put the rpg like  single-player like the last one. This one seems like a cash grab too me

Typical Nintendo laziness. The GBC/GBA versions had the RPG side game that made them so much more interesting. Seems like Nintendo had this one in the can for a while.

For goodness sake it's shamefull how people can take reviews so seriously. The amount of people taking gamespots word for it and deciding not to buy just because of what some loser says is pathetic. If you like the 64 one i'm 90% sure you'll like this, you don't need to be an employed reviewer to work that one out!

@Cazy008 Actually, what your exhibiting is brand loyalty.  You'll buy practically anything with the Nintendo or Mario name slapped on it. What reviews like Mark is pointing out is how little Nintendo has done to make this game worth purchasing.  He brings up valid points, but you conveniently disregard them because this is "Mario Tennis".  Mark is saying that it is Mario Tennis, just less of it.  And no reason to call the reviewer a "loser" because you don't agree with him.... Maybe you're the one taking things too seriously.

Cazy008
Cazy008

Are you serious? I'm going by Gametrailers review and CVGs review. Well respected reviewers in the industry to make my decision. And just for the record Mark did not review this game he just read it out for the video review.

If your gonna criticize the game then Criticize it but dont just spout nonsense like saying "Oh this isnt a realistic Tennis game"......................................NO SHIT IT ISNT A REALISTIC TENNIS GAME ITS A MARIO GAME! I long for the days when reviewers and critics criticized things based on substance amd sensibility instead of spewing random conjecture and nonsense. This is why I dont trust Gamespot Reviewers opinions because they scream of bias and they dont do common sense reviews.

@Slim_Lyrics Im no fanboy I own all the systems and have no favorites (being a fanboy is retarded) I just hate Gamespots way of reviewing games in general. I walk away from the experience not knowing if I can trust what they say to be accurate.

@IanNottinghamX You made a good point. If you want a tennis sim then try virtua tennis (which is barely  a sim). I'm just annoyed at how boring the comments section is.

Crap review. Simple as. I'v looked at other reviews and they all seem a lot more positive. This review has statements like "all the mini games involve hitting balls in certain directions"...Well, it's a tennis game for F in sake! Go play Skyrim n Mass effect and stop chatting crap bout Nintendo.

DAMN! This has to be the harshest review for a Mario game i've ever seen. You know Nintendo fanboys are going to be on this like the bubaonic plague.  Well it was nice knowing ya Mark (even though you didn't actually write this review).  i guess the check from Miyamoto must of bounced (LOL).

@Slim_Lyrics To be fair, Nintendo fanboys are better than PS3 and 360 fanboys. and ANYTHING is better than a PC fanboy.

Yeah, game sounds half-assed.  I'd rather play Virtua Tennis on the Vita again than this.

How could you give this game 5.5 out of 10. That's a bit of a hurtful thing to say for a game like this but I'm still going to get this game anyway next week. But I hate Tom McShea who said very unpleasant stuff with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in November last year. There's more exciting depth in Skyward Sword and the controls are responsive than ever.

JustPlainLucas
JustPlainLucas like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Whellock Except that Skyward Sword was far from a perfect game.  I actually liked it less than Tom did, which means that the game definitely falls short of being great enough to be loved unconditionally by Zelda fans, which I am one of.  You should take your Nintendo goggles off every once in a while to see that Nintendo is not infallible.

@Gelugon_baat What are you talking about? McsShea is probably the biggest Nintendo hater at Gamespot. The only other company he hates more tan Nintendo is Sony.

 @Slim_Lyrics That's exactly why he gave Super Mario Galaxy 2 a 10.

@Slim_Lyrics You caught McShea in his anti-Nintendo conspiracy. He could only hide the checks from Sony and Microsoft for so long. Good work.

@supersackboy23 EXACTLY! It's all part of the plan, an attempt to throw Nintendo fanboys off guard. Make them think that you love Nintendo so they'll give you Nintendo games to review and finally when a game like  Skyword Sword comes out, you pounce.
