Question about N7 Rank

Okay, I've been looking around the net everywhere and can't find an answer to this, so here it goes. I know how to raise the N7 Rank, and that it's basically a meaningless number. However, I've been noticing some really high ranks (1000+) have the N7 white and red stripes on their human races' right arms. The first time I saw it I tried replicating it with the appearance customization, but to no avail. Is the N7 stripes on human characters a result of having a high N7 rating, or am I just on something? In fact, does N7 do ANYTHING at all besides help to sort out the newbies from those of us that have been playing for a while?

I'm pretty sure yeah, I've been noticing it WAY before Earth, and on the default Human classes. Besides, my Fury doesn't have the stripes either, not that I've noticed a Fury with them in the first place. I've only noticed them on default Humans, and if they're on the Earth classes I haven't noticed.

No, N7 doesn't do anything at all except tell you roughly how many times someone has promoted. Appearances can be unlocked obviously but not to the effect you thought you saw. The new N7 humans can have a very Shepard-esque red stripe as previous poster mentioned.

the human engineer can have a pattern that gives a stripe on the sleeves, there might be others. it has nothing to do with N7 rank, just esthetic sensibility.
