A post-modern video game masterpiece. If you can't accept playing as Raiden for one reason or another, you'll never see the brilliance of this game.

GameSpot's Greg Kasavin explains why Metal Gear Solid 2 was worth every minute of the wait in this video review.
This game is spectacular, except for the fact that you have to play as effeminate Raiden throughout most of the game. I like playing as Snake!
it was really good, but it was kind of a letdown seeing how mgs4 is soooo great. mgs3 is really good tho
When I fist got my PS2 this was the 2nd game I got, and the 1st MGS game I had played. I have been hooked ever since. A great game!
@buding4curry Get both. If you have to get one then get 2, you won't really catch a lot of the plot points in 3 if you don't play 2 first.
If you skip the cutscenes and Codec you can beat it in 2 hours (Tanker and Plant). But if you watch them its about 7 or 8.
@ RetroGamerX11 Me too!! Except I played this one first then then Snake Eater, I'm currently playing MGS4 and i want to get MGS1. I'm pretty sure it will be rare to find so I'll get it over PSN, although i want the disk and case and manual.
I got into metal gear solid at the beginning of this year. MGS4 was the first one I played and beat, and now I want to smack myself for not playing the other ones first. I think they're all awesome, and I still play MGS2. I can't even pick a favorite because they're all good. Really great game.
". . . better then whats playing in the movies or whats on tv" [sic]. so true. i've thought about getting a PS2 to go back and play this and some other games but theres plenty of more recent metal gear games to keep me occupied.
Man! I love the bottle shooting at 4:15 because I remember being BLOWN AWAY at being able to do that. That shows that Hideo is not only a story visionary, but a true videogame visionary as well.
Simply the best game, and best story ever. Once you knwo the story, I don't see how anyone can have a bad word against it. Really powerful message.
This game seems to be one of the most hated on games. Having just beaten and played it for the first time a couple months ago, I can say this game is better then 99% of games this gen. And I got it for .75 cents.
Fantastic Game...I know many MGS fans dont like it as much for a bunch of reasons (not the least being that you're not snake for most of the game) BUT this this might be my favorite. The game play changes from MSG1 were great. I love the story and the cut scenes. I can replay this game over and over again (HA, and I do!)...simply fantastic.
As much as I love MGS2, I found it to be the weakest in the story. The first and third were absolutely amazing, especially the third, but MGS2 has Vamp, which is the greatest villain in the entire series!
I just started the game today. It's great so far, Metal Gear Solid 1 was awesome, and I hope this is even better!
Great game, it's a bit embarrassing how much Hal cries tho. He cries a lot in MGS4 too - he's a big cry baby.
this game was pretty cool, but i played mgs 3 first with all the extra gameplay bits so this seemed a bit dated, but it was freakin awesome tho
8 years later and i'm still playing this game. This is still one of the best looking games out there.
Reason they didn't mention Raiden was because trailers at that time didn't even show or mention Raiden and plus Kojima had to keep that as a suprise (to some, disappointment to others). Also Greg said he couldn't talk about that story. Not to sound like a PS(1,2,3) fanboy but there is a huge doubt out there that MGS4 will ever come out for other consoles. There was A LOT of references to the PS3 plus Kojima said that the Blu Ray disc wasn't big enough for MGS4 so they had to cut some bits out. Plus Konami and Kojima actually wanted to say a big thank you to the console they started out with. Started out with Snake on PS and end/retire Snake on PS. So, I highly doubt MGS4 will come out for Xbox 360. But maybe it will come out for "Xbox 720" and when Microsoft aren't on their high horse still thinking HD DVD will make a come back...
Kind of a short review for such a great game. But its a very good review, applause to Greg once again for his quality reviews.:P
Haha he sounds like he doesn't know how to put it in to words just how spectacular this game is. And who could blame him!
