Can't connect to minecraft.net

So I started out playing Minecraft for free on my account until I could buy the online version so I could play with friends. I just bought the game today and I keep getting a "can't connect to minecraft.net" and the options to try again or play offline. Did I just waste $25?

That happens if you're not connected to the internet. If it does, you can always just play offline, the only difference is that you can't do multiplayer.
