It took me as long to cook my pizza rolls as to watch this.  I learned more from this.

I was one of the biggest MK fans on the planet back in the mid-90s. I spent most of the time in school (7th and 8th grade then) drawing MK characters, creating game scenarios and getting people to draw stuff for my wall in my bedroom devoted to the games. I saw the first movie 10 times in the theater and I got into journalism because of the series -- my logic being that if I could write about the series, I would have to be a journalist with a degree. MK literally changed my life.

Love it or hate it mortal kombat has made such an impact in gaming that you can say does deserve some recognition and brought gore to a new level back in the early 90's and yet blew my mind back in the day :-)

Nice video. I remember playing the game at the bowling alley. It was THE game. You had to wait in line to play it. The secret moves were passed along mostly by experimentation and word-of-mouth as there wasn't much of an internet back then. I never cared that much for Street Fighter, but Mortal Kombat hooked me with the first quarter.

Very good feature, well done, GS. I remember playing MK1 for the first time, at the mall arcade waiting for my mom to finish shopping. She came back just in time to see me get upper-cutted into the pit with all the severed heads and so on - that was the end of that for a while. Ah, memories. :)

The first time I played a MK title was MK3 on the PS1, I remember trading in an Olympics game that came bundled with the console for it, I got to the store and these guys were playing Alone in the Dark, I looked down through the glass counter and there it was, this cardboard box with the "pop out" MK3 logo on it, back then I had only heard of it but the cover art had me captivated and I didn't even need to think twice and with that came months of MK madness, the first thing I would do when coming back from school was MK, I even dressed up as Liu Kang and my friends as Kano and Sub-Zero for the school Halloween party.

But looking back now I am surprised at how good at the game I was, after downloading MK2 on PSN I can't even get past the 2nd match and back then I could go all the way to Motaro  without breaking a sweat and I was around 8 years old (man that is good memory), I cant wrap my head around the fact that my 8 year old self could kick my ass in MK now, I would own him in Tekken though xD

MK was the best back in the days, 2D.  too bad the move to 3d wasn't too impressive.  I moved onto Tekken and Soul Calibur.

It is a fun game for sure, but it never occur to me that it is some sort of an art. At some point it is a bit unappealing.

I remember being at the arcade at a convenience store as a kid and beating every arcade player in Mortal Kombat II using only Sub-Zero alone. Got a 17 win streak before my mom would tell me it's time to go home. The good times.

I was there when the game first came out. I remember how huge it was when I and others saw fatalities for the first time.

Excellent retrospective Gamespot! Thanks. You guys have been awesome lately from doing this stuff, to marathons (not quite long enough though lol), to getting Jeff back. Great job.

I remember playing this 24/7 at my friends house, until his mom realized how violent and addictive the game was. After that we could only play after school when she was still at work. Good times.. :DGood Job Gamespot!! More documentaries like this, fun to know all this from one of my all time favourite game as a kid :)

Mortal Kombat started out as a fun change of pace and gained so much attention from all sides that its success was unavoidable. I'm glad I got to see this series from the begining. Grats to the creators!
