30 million Angry Birds downloads last week

Bird-flinging strategy game series hits milestone during December 22-29 week; 8 million Christmas Day downloads is up 1.5 million over 2011.

Angry Birds franchise games were downloaded 30 million times during the Christmas week (December 22-29), developer Rovio Entertainment announced today. In addition, the franchise saw 8 million downloads on Christmas Day alone, which is up from 6.5 million last year.

Citing data from application analytics firm Flurry, Rovio also claimed that some 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas Day, meaning about one Angry Birds game was downloaded for every other new device activated.

Rovio had a busy 2012. The company released four new games (Angry Birds Space, Amazing Alex, Bad Piggies, and Angry Birds Star Wars) during the year, which also saw the Angry Birds series reach one billion downloads.

Last month, Rovio announced that the Angry Birds movie will release in summer 2016, helmed by Iron Man and Despicable Me producers.

Angry birds is fun, so are all the other indie and mobile games. But its this much popular because its the only game mass non-gaming peoples can play. I wish mass people cld access other great indie games and make them this much popular.

I fucking hate the entire Angry Birds universe. They have dragged this bull shit into any form of matter they can obtain, and its a little obnoxious and not entirely business savvy.

@mikezer0 If they can make money I'd say thats business savvy...

Even if it is money made off the idiotic masses of sheep.

@Elena_The_Turk @mikezer0 Well when I speak of business savvy, I mean that in the respect of their sudden urgency to expand into other forms of consumer profit. Tshirts, action figures, and other things outside the game including the movie seem premature in every respect. The brand recognition might be there in some regards, I just do not think the game has the longevity that they wish it would have. In simple terms, turning a few successful games into a multimedia brand is not in my opinion business savvy.

@mikezer0 What is not business savvy about making boatloads of money?

Well it is fun, but I retired after Angry Birds in Space. Can't take much more of the games.

Some of these people that comment are downright stupid. What happened to gaming being for fun?

It's a free Download, why not? You get a new phone, you check it out, and then play it for less than an hour.

30 million downloaded it.........500 played it more than 30 minutes.

@Epictacosam Angry Birds isn't the kind of game you sit there and play like that though. It's a game you play for.....*drum roll* FUN!

It's interesting that they are talking about downloads rather than sales. With all the people getting new iPhones and iPads over Christmas it's probably not surprising that so many people downloaded the game. The real question is how many people already owned the game and how many bought a new copy?

@Mazoch even still it's pretty impressive if even only half of that number downloaded it for the first time

I wonder how many people that downloaded it actually played it for longer than a couple minutes and didn't end up deleting it.

They better hope that angry birds is still relevant in 2016, because if it isn't then the movie will look like a fish out of water.
