3DS may record 3D video...eventually

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata would like to include functionality with "future updates" of forthcoming handheld.

When the Nintendo 3DS is shown off at next week's press event, one of the features that will likely be touted is its ability to snap 3D photos. However, the ability to snap three-dimensional shots may be the first step in expanded 3D media functionality, if Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has his way.

In the latest edition of Iwata Asks, the executive discusses a variety of subjects, including how the GameCube almost had 3D functionality. When the subject of the 3DS's 3D camera came up, fellow panelist Shigeru Miyamoto said it will be interesting to see if the 3DS will help 3D photography spread the way cell phone cameras helped photography spread.

Then Miyamoto said, "Iwata-san also wants to include 3D video in the future!" Iwata responded, "I think it will be fun if we're able to include video recording capabilities with future updates." It was unclear if the executive meant a firmware update of some sort or perhaps a later hardware iteration of the 3DS.

Iwata went on to explain that long videos could be taken courtesy of the 3DS's use of SD cards as storage media. Though the device comes with a 2GB card as standard, it can be fitted with SD cards of up to 32GB, according to Iwata. "Long videos, lots of photos, they'll fit," he remarked.

Iwata and Miyamoto discussed other uses for the still 3D camera from using it to get a new perspective on construction sites to using it as a new way to capture travel experiences. The latter also joked, "if you take photos of food in 3D, it looks extra delicious!"

The 3DS isn't at its final design yet. Thats another good reason for me to wait before I purchase.

Well, I already have a 3D camera that does photos and video in 3D, so if the 3DS doesn't do video, not a big deal for me. I would like to see 3DS as a catalyst for that pushes development of 3D technology. For one, I would love to see glasses-less 3D digital photo frames come out so I'm not limited to seeing 3D pics on a 3 inch display.

Well, if it play games, is enough for me

@quiksurfer Maybe they have a partnership running with memory card vendors to bring in the extra cash !!!

kind of pathetic to include a 2gb card at least with a 8 or 16gb card

Extra Delicious! That's what we need more temptations than the food network. This is why we are over weight in the first place. Now we can pretend to eat a 3D image.

I am happy for this feature; I won't use it much but that would be cool to have on this device. I don't see why people are complaining about features they don't have to use. Sure, the 3DS has features that doesn't have to do with gaming, but guess what? You don't have to use them. I am actually glad they add more to do than to just play games; just ONLY playing games will get boring eventually. Sometimes, after playing a game, I may want to browse around with the menus and other stuff on a system. If you want games, then buy the games and don't complain about something you are not forced to use. 3DS just keeps getting better and better. :D

These 3D videos will probably drain the 3DS battery like a drunk man drains a can of beer. I hope the low battery problem on the 3DS gets solved on the next iteration

People complaining that this is taking from the gaming abilities of the device only need to step back and look at consoles today.Xbox,Wii,and PS3 all have internet and streaming capabilities of some kind now. They all have what are essentially "apps" to be downloaded which gives them increased functionality. But are these necessary? No.All you have to do is not use them, and on all 3 systems, you can have a blast.Personally I log a lot of Wii-time,but I have fun on the 360 too,and I don't even have the stuff to hook it up to the internet yet.All these things are just extra, and if you don't want them, just don't use them.Duh. (It would also help to look at that phenomenal game line-up,rather than just the Japanese launch titles for the 3DS.)

To be honest I would be perfectly content with a DS that just plays games. I don't really want to use a ds to record videos so I'd just be paying for extra stuff that I don't use. It would be interesting if it were integrated as some sort of 3d video chat capability, but even then I think most people would use their phones or computers instead of their ds to chat with people. Outside of that, this still looks promising

Man I totally can't wait for this thing.Haters can stuff it,this will rock, and someday they'll be jealously defending the object of their immature and primitive fanboyism. 3D pictures of food....Now there IS an idea.I bet McDonald's will jump on that as soon as 3D TVs become everyday material.

@hyttenhoof Very true, but when the PSP first came out, they were focused on making their machine do everything a DS/iPod combo could do. I also want to see what the PSP2 might offer, but I'm pretty sure they're going to go the same route as the first one ALA Apple: appease the hardcore Brand Name fans first, bring everyone else in later.

@inaka_rob When would you suggest i do that? During uni or when im caring for my daughter? Perhaps it might be worth thinking in future before posting your ignorant and outright offensive opinions on the internet. And those of you who agreed with his comment are no different.

@wildsdualpack I know, i know. Its more of a statement of my future dilemma, rather than present. But of course i didn't specify that in my post so you were quite right to assume otherwise.

it looks extra delicious BAHAHAHA. i wonder if they will actually do it. they said the DS would be able to communicate w/ the wii but that was hardly ever utilized. i don't really care to take pictures with a .3 megapixel camera though.

Right now nothing is known. Speculation is: 3-5 hours of battery life= doesn't sound good Region locked = can't travel or import- bad news if 3DS is hacked Friend codes= slap to hardcore- Monster Hunter Tri has no friend codes=? Higher priced= my guess is $250 as Jyen is about 82.90 Games are pricer- $5-10 / Would want an official news from Nintendo and something real. Remember that 3D is bad for young kids and doctors said it was all lies. It was also for Nintendo to avoid lawsuits / Just want the truth. Anyone with me?

The fact that the 3DS will automatically download updates is awesome rather than you updating it yourself. It sounds most likely that this will be an update rather than another 3DS, so dont get your trousers in a bunch guys. Recording Videos? Awesome but note that its only gonna be in the 3DS to watch, which is fine by me. Miyamoto, your freakin amazing.

kavadias1981 We know nothing of both. Wednesday is when Nintendo will announce official news. Right now, its all speculation and fanboy dreams about holding roses and crying about how Nintendo makes them happy.

@DaneGamer The problem is, that EVERY console EVER made, will damage your eyes if you use them too long without taking breaks. It's suggested that you take 15 minute breaks every hour to an hour and a half. If you don't take those breaks, you're a moron.

puppiemaster
puppiemaster

I saw the 3DS in Tokyo, before anyone moans about it, actually pick it up and save a look, it truly is amazing.

Red-Metal

@DaneGamer Have you even read about the 3DS? If you did then you would know that there is a 3D slider which can turn the 3D on or off and adjust how intense the 3D is. Also Nintendo already made a system that hurts your eyes the Virtual Boy, which you probably don't know about either. So I'm not really sure why you don't believe it when it all ready happened.

OmegaGear
OmegaGear

@DaneGamer Well, that depends on how this damage comes about. A lot of consumer 3D products cause disorientation and eye strain from use, so gamers may have to take breaks because of that. More than likely though, I think that warning is just there for potential lawsuits to be combated.

SpinoRaptor24

Sounds good, but I still would have switched it for no region locks.

@wiidsduelpack The US price or worldwide price hasn't been announced. The 3DS isn't the only console region locked and the friend code system well... yes I don't like it but it's not a major issue.

@lock445 okay. let me quote you: "people who want to PLAY GAMES, not dance around a million other popular smartphone features" 1st. (fyi I am not a fan boy, I owned both. I like both equally for the most part) The DS has WAY more games than the PSP. and it has WAY more AAA titles than the PSP. so whats your point? 2nd The PSP has WAY more fucntions than the DS. Before I got my smart phone I used my PSP for EVERYTHING but making phone calls. so agian. whats your point? time for another quote: "the general population believe ... (that) 3-minute interval gaming is what portable gaming IS" huh? have you ever played a DS and any of its games. 3 minute gaming? I put like 100 hours into each of my ds games. I dont see why you are hating on them for puting a 3d camera in it. its just something extra. if you dont want it dont buy it. god knows the psp and ps3 have a bunch of things I dont use, but I still use the other features. its just like Xbox live. people complaing about having espn and stuff like that. if you dont like it get a ps3, or dont use ESPN.
