All Call of Duty gamers should play multiplayer, says designer

Treyarch's David Vonderhaar says it "bugs the sh** out of" developer that many do not spend time with multiplayer; new Combat Training mode aimed at bringing in new players.

According to Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar, every person who plays this year's Call of Duty: Black Ops II should log time in the game's multiplayer mode. In an interview with Activision's One of Swords blog, Vonderhaar said the game's updated Combat Training mode was developed as a means to bring more players into the virtual battlefield.

“As popular as [Call of Duty] is, there are a lot of people who don’t play [multiplayer],” Vonderhaar said. “And quite frankly, this bugs the sh** out of us. They should all play [multiplayer]. And Combat Training helps us get there.”

Treyarch updated Combat Training for Black Ops II in a number of ways, the first of which is that the first ten levels gamers gain in this mode will transfer over to players' public ranking. Gamers can also earn experience points (XP) beyond level 10 for objective-based gametypes in Combat Training, but only at a 50 percent XP accrual rate.

Black Ops II hits store shelves for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13, with a Wii U release following on November 18. A PlayStation Vita game--Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified--is due sometime this fall.

Then make a decent MP again. Modern Warfare and WaW, on PC, had good MP modes, I spent many an hour on them.

Then came MW2 which had horrible lag, few options for tweaking match settings and, worst of all, a hugely reduced player count. MW and WaW could have 32vs32, it was epic. MW2 crippled that, brought it down to 9vs9. What the fuck? There are other reasons that CoD MP sucks these days but others have already been there so why bother...

Besides, I really enjoy the single player of CoD games even if they are a little frustrating sometimes. It's a good cinematic experience and it pulls me in. That's why I play the new titles, not for the MP at all.

Why so others can make Swiss cheese outta me with one bullet, shot through a building and so elegantly penetrating itself "ghostly" through a rock in front of me, as I slow motion die from this "special" ballistic....haha....I play MP cause I like to see how many times and ways I can be killed and how long I "don't" last....0h what fun it is!!fun!fun.....

Awwww, it bugs the sh&* out of them, that's such a heart breaker. Well, it's not really the designers' fault that people don't play MP. A lot of people don't play MP because they enjoy a storyline, no matter how simple it is, and having teammates that actually fit into that storyline (no matter how bad the AI may be). They don't enjoy having to put up with online ADHD, you know, the kid running around knifing people, or the idiot singing into his mic, or that fellow who's constantly yelling at others for not playing "his way". MP doesn't appeal to everyone, so suck it up and don't use this as an excuse to skimp on the single player. Call of Duty was originally meant for BOTH MP and SP.....not just one or the other.

 @Briffault They are really focusing as well on the storyline. There are major changes in the singleplayer.

Make a better game if you want it to appeal to a different player base. I enjoy COD games as well, but nobody can deny its the same rehashed content over and over and over,  Add skill based servers if you want. Why pit a team full of new people vs a team full of level 50 presti's?  The new people in all likelyhood will be destroyed thus pushing them from the game.

Single player has some distinct advantages. You play when you like, you can stop at any point and you do not have to suffer idiots.

Could help but laugh when I read this, seriously who buys COD these days and doesn`t play MP, there`s over a million people playing it why would they care if some don`t paly it they get there money and I assume the people are happy no to play it.

 @Scottisme I've played COD MP once.....and it was the most annoying experience I've ever had. Well, except when I was on the bus with that one dude who wouldn't shut up.

 @Scottisme I never play online multiplayer. I would try it if I didn't have to pay for stupid XBL Gold but even then I just pay the campaign... I usually wait a year after though and buy it for 20 $ because you're right at 60 $ it's not worth it if you're not playing MP.

@blastmaster2k2 Thanxs Blast...exactly what I was thinking.....I still play MP, to get a laugh at all the ways I can and will be killed during my Tour online....I think and feel so bad as a player that I think I hold a record somewhere, from the amount of "cheese holes", in my player.....Swiss cheese anyone?? LoL

This mentality has dumbed down the gaming comunity to the point where honestly i doubt they can get any dumber, but im surprised by new levels of stupidity all the time, so we'll see if the world can simply get any worse.

Call of Duty multiplayer: Hear juvenile idiots swear. Run in virtual circles, like some breathless rodent stuck inside a military marketing maze. Shoot, kill, die. Shoot, kill, die. Shoot, kill, die. Meaningless twitching against obnoxious fat bodies, who fear women and fantasize about war, is not my idea of entertainment. Perhaps I would be inclined to accept multiplayer if Treyarch made it less vulgar.

 @Sniper Actually, you will do much more than that in Modes like domination. You will shoot down UAVs, enemy air support, call in UAVs and play on the objective and last but not least, kill people.

 @Sniper So i'm guessing by this comment you don't play any FPS games at all because shoot, kill, die is about all you can do in an FPS.... OR your one of the retarded Battlefield owns COD blah blah (I like both games and there not even comparable! ones an arcade style shooter and the other being more tactical) but yeah battlefield is also shoot, kill, die if this was the point of your comment.

 @mantheash You guessed wrong on so many levels, it boggles the mind. In order to make the priceless investment of time worthwhile, I need compelling narrative and sympathetic, imperfect characters with believable motivations. Speaking from experience, mind-numbing multiplayer fails to deliver those attributes. If you still feel confused, let me make the point another, more primal way: Answer the call of your loins and try to mate with an attractive lady. Look into her eyes and express your appreciation for the arts. Regale her with tales of your awesome online kill streaks. Show her that hard, warrior body you developed while sitting on the couch. Convince her that Xbox achievements really do count. I guarantee she will not be impressed.

Screw multiplayer, single player is where it's at for me, that's why i don't buy COD games, single player doesn't last as long. I want games with great stories and a lengthy single player campaign. I'm not shelling out 60 of my hard earned dollars for multiplayer and a short single player campaign.

 @x_hunter00 This kind of comment totally parallels the posts about kids playing that ruin the gaming community.  The whole "YOU SUCK NOOB LRN 2 PLAY" mentality is what is helping force people away from playing multiplayer.  Kids act like its a frigging social status in real life to be a level 100000 prestige.

Pretty sure that was aimed at frankenstrat but you're right, my connection is terrible and being a split second behind everyone else takes a lot of the fun out if it.  Occasionally I'll have a good connection and on those rare occasions there's nothing more fun than COD.

exactly the reason I don't buy CoD games. I know they want me to play multiplayer and their single campaign shows as much. I don't get why people are even complaining about his comments. Just quit buying the game if it wasn't made for you. I don't give these guys any of my money anymore for this reason alone. 

 

Let me know when someone makes a meaningful FPS again without all the multiplayer tacked on.

I do enjoy private online when i got the time with people i know so i can enjoy myself and have a good chat over the match

 @Mokuba34 Know what ya mean, at least there's a mute option for public since there's no way to join a public without them but private's the best way to go if you get enough ppl together for it.
