Interesting.Usually new hardware dominates week one of it's launch. Still, not bad numbers, and kudos to the 3DS for still going strong. PS.32 Japanese people grabbed the wrong box. :P
Sony's new handheld comes in second to 3DS on hardware sales chart in launch week; Square Enix's latest RPG tops software charts.
All eyes were fixed on the PlayStation Vita when it launched in Japan on December 17, so there's no surprise that Sony's new handheld made its presence known in the recent Media Creates sales chart on both the software and hardware sides. Not to be outdone, the release of a major Final Fantasy title in the country proved that role-playing game juggernauts can still sell, even with everybody talking about the availability of a new device.
The PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIII-2 debuted at first place on the sales chart for the week of December 12 through December 18, with 525,271 units sold. However, the Xbox 360 version was nowhere to be found in the top 20 list. The game takes place after the events of Final Fantasy XIII and stars the returning Serah Farron, as well as new character Noel Kriess. New to the sequel are bigger dungeons, multiple story arcs involving fixing time paradoxes, and new enhancements to the Paradigm Shift battle system.
Monster Hunter 3G was knocked down a peg but maintained a steady sales position; Capcom sold 208,427 units of the 3DS iteration of the action role-playing game. Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS was placed just behind Monster Hunter 3G with 182,418 units sold, while the latest version of the Inazuma Eleven series--Inazuma Eleven Go for the 3DS--was at fourth place with 135,259 units sold.
The top-selling PS Vita title was Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, followed by Uncharted: Golden Abyss. The former was at seventh place with 61,412 units sold, while the latter was at eighth place after shifting 48,224 copies. Other Vita titles that made it into the top 20 included Dynasty Warriors Next, which was at 18th place with 29,181 units sold, and Lord of Apocalypse, which was at 19th place with 28,742 units sold.
In hardware, the PS Vita showed strong first-week sales but was unable to pass Nintendo's 3DS portable for the number one spot. Sony sold 324,859 units of the PS Vita while Nintendo sold 367,691 units of the 3DS during the same period. Sony also sold 65,119 PS3s and 64,468 PSPs in the same week.

Final Fantasy is still lot of fun tho... sometimes you gotta move on, not be stuck in past games, chill eh?...
@ABEzilla116 Dont u mean FF hasnt been amazing since Square-Enix took over from Squaresoft after FFX? X-2 was the beginning of the end IMO.
@Clive at this rate 43,000 is likely to be the total week 3 sales for Vita ;op (j/k but might actually turn out to be about right)
what the hell have you got to do with hardware sales? just buy your favorite piece of hardware and play.
Come on, post the new sales figures so everyone can see that Vita got outsold by the 3DS almost 7-to-1 >:D
@Oldboy08 I think mario-nin-freak is trying to say that gamespot is trying to ignore the fact that the 3DS sold 367691 units in a week which is a lot of units.
@ Halloll Actually Dark Souls sold in its 1st week 1. US 141,665 copies 2. Europe 64,613 copies 3. Japan 282,357 copies And thats a huge jump from what Demon's Souls sold in its 1st week.
Oldboy, though the Vita numbers are for 2 days of over the counter sales, they will actually include weeks and months of preorders so your logic is actually reversed, ie it's 7 days of 3DS sales vs months of Vita sales.
@mario-nin-freak you are clearly a fanboy who doesnt know how to READ. those are the sales numbers from 2 days for the VITA, vs 7 days for the 3DS. you dont think those 5 days make a big difference? come on boy. grow up eh.
@kiramasaki I like how VITA fans were all talking about how it would totally outsell the 3DS regardless of the "cheap" price they said it had. Now that the 3DS still sells better they say it's pretty good considering how much cheaper the 3DS is. Go figure...
@kiramasaki A remake just to improve graphics sounds pretty stupid idea. They'll just end up screwing it up. Besides SE has already said they have no interest in remaking 7 nor making another sequel
@ ar6ra6sh9 Sup dude!! Glad to have you as a fan!! Anyway on to your questions. Question #1: Time to rip into square again for making me wait a bajillion years for versus. Then taking the versus team and using them to work on XIII, then doing it AGAIN. OH MY GOD, lets not focus on getting the seemingly better game out when we can roll out what nobody asked for!! Question 2:Yes!! but obviously I was wrong cause got thumbed down 3 times! DOH!! Question 3: uhhh..what was your question again? I forgot. Hang on one sec let me scroll down real quick.....oh yeah that's right, funny. Answer: Yes Question 4: Most definitely yes. ( I get accused of this ALL the time, but I've just learned to endure it). Hope this helps!! Have a good one bro!!
@Jebatin, FF7 is really really dated graphically; and it doesnt fit into that nice retro style of the older ff titles like 1-6 either; it has really blocky looking effects; @mario-nin-freak, uh you seem to be a slow of the mind; first of all gamespot, should be renamed nintendo's ball sack shiner, because they are terribly pro nintendo biased; second of all there was an article on the vita earlier, I believe last week where it said yes the vita its first week sold 320 and the 3ds sold 370; but you seem to be the daft one, because the 3ds cost 50-100 cheaper than the vita, so outselling it by that margin was not impressive for nintendo
I like how Gamespot tries to ignore how the 3DS just sold more than the VITA in it's first week on shelves!
@kiramasaki FFVII remake??? Dude no need to fix it if it's not broken. FFVII is a great game as it is
Lets not forget the vita costs significantly more than the 3ds and the sales are neck and neck, and mario kart is garabage, snes mkart is a masterpiece, 64was avg, ddwas lame, mkart now is simply like m party, nintendo justs trots out the same game with a different #. Agree with ff naysers, dont give us this crap 13_2 , give us versus, 7 remake, kh3, or chrono break or take a hike. And can we get a console monsterhunter.
@ Fritzzland Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Its just that i want to be sure the full picture is being seen, thats why i put the stats below because the numbers in this article makes it look like FF XIII-2 is a success, when if you look at it in context is in fact not, and its relatively small sales MEANS something. Now i look at this page and i see the advertising at the top and several pictures to SE and i see an article that whether it means to or not is promoting the sale of this game, when gamasutra correctly highlights the FACTS. But there are fanboys/girls everywhere that blindly follow a label because its popular and has a prestigious name, rewarding lazy/out-of-touch publishers/developers that pervert a label when fans should be holding the "NEW" owners of it to task. FACT: SE have "listened to the complaints" about XIII and have changed much about it to "improve" te game. There is proof right there that they KNOW they screwed up the last game. (No Square/soft game made that mistake...have you asked yourself why? - answer - because they invented FF and they KNOW what makes a FF game) FACT: Rightly so fans in Japan have largely NOT bought the "new and improved" version of XIII because they KNOW SE cannot make FF games. Instead SE make games that try really hard to appeal to todays market instead of making games that appeal to gamers hearts and minds like Square/soft did. Just look at the facts guys, thats all i ask.
I just find it so weird how the 3DS and PSP are insanely popular in Japan, whereas here they're not so popular. Would it ask so much for Online Play to be added to Monster Hunter series on PSP? It's getting pretty ridiculous.
Wow i got thumbs down for telling facts? Meh. Look up the old article for when 3Ds launched. The numbers were pitiful.
the 3ds just got its system updates with an awesome addictive message system - so right now im addicted to that and cant even play games cause the system is so fun - not to mention all other new updates - 3ds is really shaping up!!!! as for vita - its no surprise - psp always sold well in japan - sony and nintendo always will in japan also i bet vita is a more prebooked console than the 3ds was most people who talk about vita like its the best thing that ever happened never held the vita in their hands 3ds was no prebooking for me - i waited as ill wait with the vita - cant judge a system that is not out in my own country yet and i need to know more about!
@ABEzilla116 And just one more 3DS RPG Pokemon game(possibly gray?) to make the 3DS a real must-have.
@thisranks Well, by all rights what makes your opinion better then anyone who didn't like it? If I think the series has become bad and you think its good then just because you have the positive view doesn't mean its right. What's more, a lot of people who dislike it look at the facts of why not just out of pure spite for the series, There are real reason for disliking it and very few for liking it, However you can like it, a good test would be if you can bring yourself to admit if the series has gotten better or worse and answer realistically rather then as a fanboy.
I lost all faith in any Final Fantasy game after Thirteen, I'd had hope for it but it was dashed away. I'll stick to the older titles frankly and I hope to see the series bomb so that Square starts getting themselves together. More on topic, I'd like to see the Vita succeed and hopefully show some of those Apple fan boys/gals that a touch screen alone is good for phones but for games? no, you need physical buttons for it to be anywhere near enjoyable to control.
Wow at launch Vita is doing almost as well as 3DS.That is amazing for launch sales. After all its only doing 5 or so times better than 3DS's launch lol. Given what more is coming out as strong post-launch titles, i think we can expect to pass up 3DS.Only thing that allowed them to stay even with Vita, lets face it, is Monster Hunter.
sucks that americans have to wait more than a month for ffxiii-2 to hit stateside. looks like ill be playing a bit more skyrim until then ;)
@ Fritzzland I think your only backing up my statement below. I mentioned the sales dive and you have mentioned the quality dive. :) SE doesnt play a part here? would the game suck as much if Square was at the helm? or if they were still in charge may they have stopped a long time ago if te series was tired? Im looking at the big picture here as well as comparing what SE have done with the other gems from the Square/soft days.
@Banefire76 Nice homework but...you forgot to consider the different times of each release: FFs VII and VIII: 90's,RPGs boom FF IX: series transition to PS2,nostalgic title FF X and XII: new age FF,fancy graphics, okay story and tons of side quests FF XIII: FF is tired, recycling everything that was made before with little twists here and there. FF XIII-2:who knows?
These are the history of sales in Japan for the series... Final Fantasy VII sold 2.3 million copies in 1st 3 days Final Fantasy VIII sold 2.5 million copies in 1st 4 days Final Fantasy IX sold 2 million copies Final Fantasy X sold 1.9 million copies in 1st week Final fantasy XII sold 1.7 million copies in its first week Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.5 million copies in 1st week So Final Fantasy XII-2's piddly 500,000 is nothing to rejoice over and shows a steady decrease since Square-Enix took over after FFX. THATS why there are so many haters of SE. It is consistently ruining a great series.
@Megavideogamer yes japanese has strong pride so they will support their own country wardward for sure!!! microsoft released even great japanese titles like lost odyssey and blue dragon to catch japanese market but never been successfull!!! its impossible mission for sure!!! @dybbuk hehe what did u think when u were posting ur cm??? u thought everyone gonna love it??? or man im too funny??? or im a genius saying this???
Well, 525,271 units it's not actually big for a franchise as known as Final Fantasy, not when Final Fantasy XIII sold over a million in the same time frame. I actually see this as bad news for Square Enix.
FINAL FANTASY VERSUS!!!!!!!.....oh wait no, Final Fantasy XIII-2. Never mind, everyone can go back to sleep now.
