Although I love historically accurate and realistic WWII video games, I don't think that means we have to eliminate any game that takes "creative liberties" in order to offer a mindless, purely entertainment based shooter. WWII is such a FUN setting. I agree that they should drop "Brothers In Arms" from the title, but why is there such animosity toward the game itself? If you only like serious dramatic and story driven shooters that's fine. But I don't think its fair to assume that it is the way everyone feels or that it is the way everyone SHOULD feel. I don't see anything wrong with a WWII game that isn't realistic or historically accurate. I am not using video games to learn history anyway.
[UPDATE] Ubisoft confirms that trademarks for upcoming World War II shooter abandoned to avoid "administrative confusion."
Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 may not go to war this year as previously expected. Publisher Ubisoft has abandoned both trademark applications it filed for the title (via Superannuation), suggesting the four-player World War II action shooter has been either canceled or renamed.
The game is currently scheduled to arrive by the end of June, but Ubisoft and Gearbox Software have been mum on the title as of late, with the latest official update on the game's Facebook page coming some nine months ago.
Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 was announced during Ubisoft's media briefing at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo via a graphic bar-scene trailer, reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino's World War II action drama Inglourious Basterds.
The first new installment in the Brothers in Arms franchise since 2008's well-received Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, Furious 4 takes place during World War II and follows a band of four soldiers chasing Hitler.
[UPDATE] After the publication of this story, a Gearbox Software representative explained that the Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 trademarks were abandoned to avoid "administrative confusion."
"Initially, Ubisoft submitted the trademarks on behalf of Gearbox with Gearbox and Ubisoft as co-applicants," reads a line from the statement. "The USPTO rejected this approach (about 9 months ago), noting Gearbox's exclusive registrations for all Brothers in Arms trademarks. Given the USPTO choice between abandonment or continued administrative confusion on the matter, we simply opted for administrative abandonment until re-filing becomes necessary. To avoid confusion with the USPTO, Gearbox will be filing its future Brothers in Arms-related trademarks directly and individually."
Maan..I really love all BIA games...from RTH 30 to Hell's Highway...but now..this title ruined everything....there were funny and sad moments...but this is too much...from a great history fps they turned this into WWE or teken and stuff like that.....C'mon guys please don't make something like this...Continue the story from BIA Hell's Highway....Baker told Legget that he can handle the war in winter....that's where this story must continue! Please do it....don't make anything like this stupid Furious 4...this is NOT BIA we love....THIS IS NOT Fantastic 4!!! WE WANT OUR BIA BACK!!!!!
Please!! make a New sequal on BiA Battle of the Bulge, not a ridiculous four dumb army beat up the nazi from the Movie "Inglourious Basterds".
@txgamerwavg Battle of the bulge would be a great set piece for a game. but you need to keep in mind that they need to be locations that the 101st fought at because they are keeping historical accuracy.
@Harkonnen84 I can't tell if you are being serious.... you do know that the screaming eagles were one of the main divisions in the battle of the bulge, right? I mean they were ordered to hold Bastogne.... and they fought in the numerous towns around Bastogne, like Foy... or am I missing something and the history I have studied has all been a lie?
Good! When details of this were first released at e3 last year i posted on gamespots comments page about the game for people to boycott this game, right down to video reveals and gameplay footage. My reasoning behind this was that if no body showed any interest in this pile of steaming horse manure then gear box would dump it asap.......Why? so we can get the BIA game we really want, ie Bakers and Hartsocks story. BIA HH gave us a teaser that the next game would be set during the Battle of the Bulge and leading up to the invasion of Germany. Thats the one we want Gearbox.....Not inglorious basterds the game, or from footage i've seen, Left4dead WWII!
I hope they scrapped it entirely, the premise sounded way too ridiculous for me. I like realistic WWII games.
I agree that the game does look like a slap in the face to us BiA fans. Unfortunately, the last entry in the series was a good game, but didn't sell very well (as I recall), so they are likely trying to mix things up and reinvent it all with this game. Also, I remember a couple of years ago there was a lot of criticism from game magazines, etc., that there were TOO many WW 2 games out. Something I never personally agreed with .... And the last BiA came out about at that time.
Unfortunately it looks like they aren't actually abandoning this slap in the face to BiA fans, form the update it looks like just some legal hair-splitting. Shame, I agree with everyone else, in fact I would go further, give us another BiA that takes the gameplay back to what it was in Earned in Blood, no stupid solo missions, no jarring third person cover system, and deargod no tanks. Give us back our fastidiously historical FPS/RTS hybrid!
Eh. I'm sure the game itself will be fine, but the title was nothing special. Good to see it wasn't canceled anyway.
this games whole idea sucked @$$, i dont give a crapp about 4 dudes, i want to know about Baker and his squad
Brothers in Arms is story driven game about how some characters live is WAR and when i finished Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway they said TO BE CONTINUE...
athis game should change name title to Furious 4
I know people on here going to h8 me that i think they should can the game. Reason for it doent look a world war game and its playing silly and it doent fit in the series. I think they should just leavr it alone and saver there money. Im 100% sure not going to sale.
soooo glad they abandoned this ludicris idea, we already have hundreds and HUNDREDS of ww2 based fps games, and while i really liked the brothers in arms series *hells highway still being one of my favorite fps games* we don't need another ww2 game, seriously this idea has been done into the ground an then some! NO MORE WW2 GAMES!!!
@ShangTsung17 I don't think I could disagree more with you. Have you even played Hell's Highway? It was amazing and absolutely needs a sequel based in Bastogne, as hinted at the end of HH. What we have too many of are modern day shooters.
@tommygun6644 yes i have hells highway, its still one of my favorite shooters and yes, it could use a sequel, but the furious 4 wasn't going to even be based on that story, when u look at all the ww2 games on the market right now its crazy, even the new sniper game sounded temping till i realised it was just yet another ww2 game, just 3rd person instead of the traditional fps..
@CousinNoonga I think Shang may be confused with PS2. PS2 was loaded with WW 2 games but that was years ago. Xbox 360 i think the last WW2 FPS was BF 43, and that was just a few maps (Red Orchestra was PC not consoles). It's the Modern Genre that's saturating the market to the point of ad nauseum. If i have to shoot another Russian i think i'm going to puke. Time to go "Back to the Future" , and more to games based on WW2 and the Vietnam Era. Another serious BIA game would be more than welcome i would think.
@ShangTsung17 Seems like you should be the one using google. I only know of one WWII fps game released in the past two years, Red Orchestra 2. Well if you add aces high 2, a free to play game.
@SnakeEyesX80 ohh.. i thought it was a remake, my bad.. well i dunno bro, there out there i'm sure of it, check around or google.
@ShangTsung17 I'm not talking to you from back in 2005 am I? Lol. There are hardly any WWII shooters on the market right now. The new Medal of Honor was a modern day reboot. MoH Warfighter, while looks amazing IMO, is just a continuation of the reboot, still set in present day.
@SnakeEyesX80 too many to name really.. i think they remade the original medal of honor, u might wanna check that one out.
@ShangTsung17 So what WWII games are on the market right now besides Sniper Elite V2? I never thought I'd say this, but I'm looking forward to WWII games making a come back. I really hope DICE makes a WWII game with the FB2 engine. That would be amazing. A BF2143 would be awesome as well. The "modern warfare" shooters need to start going away.
I love the Brother in Arms series, and I am interested in this game however I want BIA 4.
Though I do hope this one is not canceled because I thought it looked interesting.
Looks like a fun game to me. Just because they change the formula doesn't mean it won't be a good game. It just might not be for everybody.
Think people on here to need to chill. I actually think it looks quite fun. Maybe not your run of the mill Brothers in Arms game, but still looks like it could have been a fun.
Glad that's being scrapped (if it is). I agree with others. Go to the Battle of the Bulge, and what they can do is have Baker (while freezing his rearend off in a foxhole) think back to the epic Normandy Battles with Allen, Desola, Garnett etc and all the rest and bring the Normandy jump and those battles to the newer consoles. So we could have the battles in snow during the Bulge, and at the same time, Normandy (to at least mix it up). So many possibilities. Anyway, i hope they do because this Modern War Genre is boring me to tears. I'm actually buying Dragons Dogma over GRAW Future Soldier. Sad.
First: I'm sad to see this title shelved (for now), the BoA/WW2 genre is stale and this franchise needs a serious "Kick in the ass" to get it back on the right path.
Second: For all the fanboys/haters/35 yr old virgins commenting on this:I'd love to see a Borderlands/Inglorious Bastards/Kellys Heroes take on the genre. This title reminded me of the Commandos series of games from the 90's, a game that played w/ WW2, but wasnt all about historical accuracy..Theres plenty of stories (real/fictional) that can be told or have been told about that era. Here's hoping randy and the gearbox team take this on properly after BL2 is released..

@Legrieme That idiot is about two months late for the "On-Disc DLC" scandal. Pro tip: Journalists should generally keep AHEAD of the curve to provide their readers with new information, not post a poorly written article that just used information that REAL journalists worked for. And, "avoiding this question..."? Are you f***ing kidding me? All they talked about was On-Disc DLC!
@Legrieme please remove that link to that blogspot. i read some of it and i almost facepalm'd myself into a coma.
this is such a non-story. For those who understand the Trademark system in America, this really is nothing, yet it's a story on just about every game website. At least you guys didn't say "expired" like joystick... not even something that happens....
Were this abomination not any way tied to the BOF franchise I wouldnt have given any thoughts to it . Seriously the game looked like Borderlands mixed with Inglorious Bastards . The game was casualized to hell to appeal to people who didnt like BOF previous Tactical Gameplay. I am very happy this thing got canned.
@firehawk998 Wow, you got to see the game?? Lucky you!!!
@MordeaniisChaos The gameplay was shown the day this title was announced. There are articles, videos, etc that shows that the gameplay was like Borderlands combat and mixed with the abilties of the characters you have chosen. It also wasnt like the previous Brother in Arms gameplay at all. So yeah Lucky me for seeing this.
