Publisher said to have joined with Sony Pictures on new 3D installment in survival horror movie series, due Sept. 14, 2012.
Capcomís Resident Evil films may aspire to middling reviews, but thereís no denying their money-making prowess. The self-proclaimed top-earning Japanese game-based film series, Resident Evilís first three films grossed more than $100 million a piece, while 2010ís Resident Evil: Afterlife has already earned more than $230 million internationally.
It should come as no surprise, then, that a fifth installment in the film series has entered production. Box Office Mojo reports that Capcom and Sony Pictures have scheduled a fifth Resident Evil for release on September 14, 2012. As with Afterlife, Resident Evil 5, as it is currently known, will be filmed in stereoscopic 3D.
Resident Evil 5 has yet to receive a subtitle, and no additional details on filming or casting have been revealed. The first four films have been loosely set in the same universe as the games and have starred Milla Jovovich as Alice, a heroine battling for survival in the midst of a zombie apocalypse unleashed by the Umbrella Corporation.
Capcom has yet to announce a formal follow-up to 2010ís well-regarded Resident Evil 5, though former design head Keiji Inafune said in September that the publisher is attempting to get Resident Evil 6 out as soon as possible. Capcom is also at work on two installments in the series for the 3DS, Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries.
I'll tell you what happens when they make a feature trying to tie to the series, you get RE-Degeneration...Boring as ShT LOL the plot of that one movie was SO random and SO not interesting, I felt like I was watching a really long crappy cutscene from RE4 I dunno bout you guys but like SDBusDriver1979 says, I never get tired of Milla Jovovich. hot chix killing sht is Boss, for example-Sukkerpunch FTW! >=P and for the record RE5 was pretty boring, really fun to play-yes but not even CLOSE to being as scary as the first 3 games.
i say start the movies with a new beginning and make the games more like resident evil 4 with online co op
Ditch mila and her craptastic writer/director husband, and give the fans what they want with a reboot of the series that actually ties into the games is some meaningful way.
also, am i the only one who thinks the guy who played wesker sucked? his acting was just bad. that voice he was doing was a little ridiculous.
oh please do we really need another action film with the resident evil name tacked on? i mean it barely resembles resident evil, i wouldnt mind if it had something to do with the series beyond the name
The first ones were alright.. Afterlife though was terrible. It might have been more enjoyable without the absolutely horrible 3D effects. Might also have not left such a bad taste without that stupid 'cliff hanger' ending.
@visionedorange That's a little extreme. Simply hating a game does not make something crap. It just proves that everyone has an opinion and not every game is for everyone.
Another? After the horrible piece of nonsensical trash Afterlife was (including stealing scenes from RE5...) I thought everyone who was involved in the project sat in their room and did a harakiri. Or at least cried. But make another?
I do agree with ((m4jestyace)) wesker must be dead. what about sherry wesker Kidnapped her. what has happened to her?... if he was dead then ada is taking care of the rest of the work and sherry is with her
well everything capcom makes is garbage these days anyways, might as well keep it up, no one has high expectations for you anymore capcom, not since resident evil 4 have the made something outstanding, and i've been a hardcore capcom fan since resident evil1, sf4 was alright, but mvc3 was trash, re5 was pretty embarassing, the wii games were meh, and the obvious trash the movies are. Capcom has decided to substitute the idea of making a quality product for instead doing the minimal amount of work needed to sell lots of copies, mvc3 is a prime example of a half finished game they thru onto the market as a cheap cash grab cuz the knew it would sell, and are then going to bombard the market with dlc that should have been included in the game to begin with to milk us, the consumer. I miss the days when capcom delivered excellent products and weren't focused on getting as much money out of people as possible with as low quality a product as they can.
I admit it, RE Afterlife felt like a guilty pleasure to me just because of Wesker. The rest, well...sucked.
Holy $&*#, not another one. These guys need to calm down with these terrible films. People, stop paying to see this crap, forreal. We all know Wesker's going to somehow come back, because they've got a fetish for him or something. And honestly, if he comes back in the games, Ima just stop paying for/supporting those as well. Seriously, be creative and stop reproducing the same crap over again. World ends, only 5-10 survivors or so left, rest of the world full of zombies, OK, we've seen it 100000^10 times over again. Seriously, RE5 was great and they annihilated Wesker. Same with the last "RE" movie. Leave it there.
@amerxenos76uk lol i saw that movie i felt like giving up on all zombie movies after watching that. yeah RE is not the greatest franchised movie but it could be much worst, anyways can't wait for damnation to come out.
The RE movies are damn good fun, which should be what you're expecting if you watch a movie based on a game. I'm sure I wasn't the only one watching the last movie to suddenly go 'hey, I remember that happening to me!', especially during some of the more OTT Wesker Moments. The shame of the series is really only that the first movie pushed the direction of the films too far away from the direction of the games, so that the later films ended up with familiar elements in unfamiliar places rather than feeling like faithful adaptations. Alice is great to watch, but the series as a whole would probably have been better had they started with Chris and Jill rather than a character who's closer to Veronica.
Oh please no more movies of Milla Jovovich, she ruined the Resident Evil Movies, the only one that was barely acceptable was the first one
I think that Capcom are trying to capitalise on the fact that... *SPOILER ALERT* ...Albert Wesker doesn't die.
They should have kept the films similiar to the games, like a bunch of STARS members, who were good at there jobs but didn't expect a confrontation with a bunch of zombies in a mansion. They all try and survive in a 'human' way and not some over the top matrix style action crap found in the movies. High kicking dogs etc is rubbish, and not true to the original Resident Evil feel. Get rid of Milla Jovovich with an original Claire Redfield or Jill Valentine. Too late now though, they have gone the ridiculous and over the top route.
I honestly don't see the real appeal of the live action films. I will concede and say that the first film was okay and I sorta liked Apocalypse but Extinction stunk (zombies don't run) and Afterlife was barely watchable. The only RE movie I liked was Degeneration by capcom, sure it was far from perfect but at least they stayed true to the tone and pace of the games. I think the only hope the live action films have is if they get rid of Paul W.S. Anderson and his wife, reboot the franchise, get the fellas at capcom who creates the games to have a heavy influence in the production (scripting, casting, set design, etc) and make it dark and atmospheric like the RE games.
i dont know if anyone knows this but theres a DEAD RISING movie and it is so bad it makes the RESIDENT EVIL films look triple oscar nominated
Lmao why are people acting like the developers are making the film? They only gave the green light. Sheeessh.
what about resident evil portable? if they were planing for resident evil 6 they must not make it like resident evil 5 we want a horror game not action game and we want it like the old resident evil games style like re1 ,re2 , re3 .... please capcom please
I actually enjoy the Resident Evil movies. Everytime I'm about to watch one I just lower my expectations and not expect much so I usually enjoy the movie. I do wish the movies did focus more on the game story and game characters but its good mindless zombie killing fun.
Good gawd. The first one was a decent enough high budget B-movie, but they need to stop this already. End the damn series. It doesn't look good for anyone anymore.
Hopefully the new director for silent hill continues silent hill as being a half descent game-adaptation film. On the other hand though, the RE movies as video game adaptations are poor, but as a movie series itself are mediocore. And although i love the action pacey modern RE games (RE4 5 were fantastic), i do eventually want that nastalgia-feeling of the old games. REmake (on the GC) was absolutely fantastic. Imagine playing a new RE with the original RE style? Saying that, if budgets are low (or whatever), i wouldn't argue against a RE2 remake if that's the furthest they would go - just to keep the original fans happy, whilst attracting new ones with the new direction =p
I totally agreed that a new game would be awesome! RE5 was my first, I guess previous not on XBox 360, was is this add on thing they did with RE5? Is it different totally and worth the money?
AS far as video games go, this series does the job. RE itself isn't what it started as back in the day. Plus, Ashanti was in it... but really, birds? Lol! Jk... interested to see what they try to do with it next....
The Fourth movie was mainly taken from RE5 with the Las Plagas and the Urobros Virus. Their was also several monsters from the video game that were put on the movie. Here are a list of them: Executioner, Majani with the plant like las plagas thing that comes out of the persons mouth, the Uroboros infected dogs where the dogs head splits in two, and of course lastly wesker from the cut scene from RE5 when Chris and Sheva after killing Excella then stop wesker form continuing his plan in spreading his virus. When Chris says "Stop right there" Wesker says "Dont you two ever get tired at failing your mission" pause You two have really been an inconveinence for me" Then Wesker throws his glasses and some how Chris catches them then Wesker beats the cramp out of Chris then takes back his glasses and puts it back on his face. That scene was incorporated straight out of the game and into the movie. The only difference was the fact that in the game you are facing him in the outside hanger of the ship. In the movie its in side the ship. But thats not the only cutscene that was taken out of the game their are several more. Oh and i forgot instead of Sheva its Claire.
Am i the only one that thinks that Milla Jovovich simply ruined the whole movie adaption of the series? I think the movie franchise should finally kill her off & place Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield as the new main characters. Seriously there is no "Alice" in the games. i just don't understand the continuity here.
I to would love a resident evil movie based closley after the game. Having just bought resident evil 2 for the gamecube (which I'm using my wii for. Gotta use it for something...) I'm a big fan of the series. But we got to think about this logically. It would be extremelly hard to do the games justice in a movie format. These movies have pissed off many fans of the resident evil series, but wouldnt it be worse if they had attempted to base the movies closer to the games? Imagine the horror when they completely screwed up the stories we have all come to love by trying to put them in an hour and a half long movie. Like I said. As much as I would love a GOOD movie based after the game, I'm glad they didnt try it. They used the foundation of the games to create a movie with a different story which really isnt all that bad once you get past the fact that its not the games story.
@tjharwin i know right in the games there were localized outbreaks not a full blown pandemic the third resident evil film lost nearly every gamer who loved the game series if not completely from the beginning.
@soulless4now Yes, The 2nd was about as bad as the first, it did score some points for being so ridiculous that it was almost amusing.
