CNN is citing a report in the Beijing News today that a 30-year-old man in Guangzhou, China, died on Saturday following a three-day gaming marathon. Though no single game was fingered as an accessory after the fact, the man reportedly fainted in the midst of his virtual binge at the Internet cafe and was pronounced dead after paramedics were unable to revive him. Aside from the victim's age, no other vital statistics were revealed, though the report did note that around 100 other cafe patrons vacated the premises "in fear after witnessing the man's death."
Gaming cafes have claimed the lives of several other individuals in the past. In 2005, a 28-year-old South Korean man died after a 50-hour gaming session. In 2002, a 24-year-old South Korean man died after 86 uninterrupted hours of gameplay. That same month, a 27-year-old Taiwanese man lasted 32 hours before succumbing to death by exhaustion.
These people had problems and gaming is not the thing to blame. Come on what kind of life do you have that you can actually do something like that for 70 - 80 hours straight.
(bereft of flippancy) The gamers are irresponsible for not taking care of themselves, if anyone notices a man's ill he should care to advise him, and the patron of the place should look after his guest. Just like a barman says "I think you've had enough" and tells a man to leave before he's blackout drunk so a game-cafe runner should kick out the man who has been in all day without eating. He should kick him out before then so he doesn't starve himself.
I only have one very important question, did he have a smoke? Seriously though,HOLY CRAP!!!WHAT GAME WAS HE PLAYING THAT WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HIS LIFE???I VOTE FOR EITHER WOW OR MAPLESTORY (You have been playing Maplestory for (72) Hours. We suggest you take a break from Mapling)If it was maple I'll bet a bunch of random defamers defamed him for a while after. Now seriously though, this reflects what happens when society tell you nothing is important and that you are nothing. You start putting mmos (and other things,Oblivion anyone?)before yourself. It is sad that this man died playing an online game and my prayers are with his family(and the family of others who have lossed loved ones, living or dead,to mmo addiction)May God bless them.
he probably died from excessive caffeine. cafeine hasnt been around in society longer than sugar. its reletively new to human bodies. i had insomnia for 4 days, granted i had meals bt even if i didint their would still be time to eat. i mean isnt their a whack of loading in an mmo? i mean he would've had to die at least once in game? you know when you cram a flaky in your mouth before it loaded. you'd think it'd be easy to get some chips or somethin. what i cant see happening is not being able to use the can.... must have been difficult. i suppose his bladder could of internially explodded?!?!? i wonder if his online guild/buddies know? id feel bad knowing i killed somebody. the lesson here is if your gonna game for X days stock up on dry foods: flakies, chips, bananas, cake, etc. move console/pc into bathroom, wash hands frequently. neways if you havent gamed for more than 20 hours you didnt have halo 2 or gta. (think hell have an online tombstone?)
Games, they kill you slow Mabey we shouldn't play games or mabey not be so stupid I cant help but notice, they are all asian (no offence)
I find it amazing that these guys are willing to play for days straight. After about 36 hours of being up I'm so darned tired you couldn't keep me out of bed.
Thats a shame, I dont think it will be an issue in the USA unless something happens, people should have self control
Just...I don't know...take a break? It's not that hard. Look at the upside though, he could put something really witty on his tombstone!
If he was at a cafe why didn't he just take a break for food and water after so many hours. It would have revitalized him. Oh yeah and he was only doing it for 86 hours. I know tweekers who go with out food and sleeping for a month playing video games and they survived.
I can see it now. Every MMORPG will have a disclaimer in the splash screen about how unhealthy it is to play continously without sleep.
That's quite a few hours.. I think I can max out at 8 hours before my eyes go buggy and I realize it's time to do .. I dunno.. something.
I'm not being racist cause I'm asian too but this is because he's asian.. I think we're not that strong... :(
It's like a real bar. They need to cut someone off after a few too many. Know when to say when dude. I especially like this part: "the report did note that around 100 other cafe patrons vacated the premises 'in fear after witnessing the man's death.'" Rule of thumb, don't keel over in Asia, you'll be left for dead. Scumbags.
dude!! what games were they playing for that long? I get bored after 2 hours of playing video games period, let alone having to go to work everyday and having some sort of life and responsibilities. I wonder how much money that cost him to stay there and play that long?
Some people in Asia LIVE in these cafes, because the cost of rent is so high.... chair time is only $10-20 a day, much cheaper than a hotel... lots of them offer free drinks and actually have showers on the premises... people just sleep in the chairs... so yes, they are open 24 hours a day, and no, they are not kicking out paying customers.
As much as I love video games, fifty hours is just insane. Anti-game critics like Jack Thompson are going to have a field day with this.
I was going to complain but I have only ever played 26-28 hours straight. Not enough to qualify for this discussion...drat!
That's nuthin'! I once lasted for ten days! Naw, just kidding. But seriously, it's your own fault if you play that long. The most I've played is 12 hours and that was with plenty of interruption.
