In addition to Alien console project, the British studio is crafting a new installment in its bread-and-butter strategy series.
Last week, the Creative Assembly surprised many by announcing it is working on a console action title based on the Alien film series. The announcement was a bit of a shock, since the British studio's specialty is real-time strategy titles for the PC, including March's well-reviewed Shogun 2: Total War. (The exception was the multiplatform Spartan: Total Warrior, released in 2005.)
However, just because the Creative Assembly is bringing another Alien game to consoles for its owner Sega doesn't mean that it's neglecting its bread-and-butter franchise. Speaking with Eurogamer, Creative Assembly creative director Mike Simpson confirmed that work is already well under way on the next installment in the Total War series.
"We never stop, so yes," said Simpson. Studio director Tim Heaton seconded his colleague, saying work began "while we were finishing Shogun 2. … Absolutely we're on the next."
Though the pair wouldn't elaborate on whether the next Total War would be set in a historical period after or before Shogun 2, they were optimistic about the financial future of the latter title. Shogun 2 has already sold over 600,000 units according to Sega Sammy's latest financial report, and the "Total War games have a really long tail," according to Heaton. Simpson added, "The original Shogun sold more copies in the second three years of its existence than it did in its first three years. They sell for ages."
I will not play Asian history, especially china or three kingdoms crap. Just not a popular time period era with me or people I know, as opposed to European and middle eastern history (ancient, greek, rome, medieval). History in schools here didn't really have but maybe a paragraph on ancient china, besides cold war era implications. Could never read or watch documentaries on ancient china, korea, etc. either; always put me to sleep. Japan was the only exception.
I'd be ok with a Rome II, but I'd also love it if they did something different. I am 100% in favor of a China: Total War. I also love another's suggestion of partnering with another franchise, the Game of Thrones franchise would be perfect, can be at least 10 unique factions to choose from...
I think we need great plains of persia and ancient countries like egypt greece babylon we need great empires. the campain of cyrus or dariush of persia is the best idea.

2 thoughts: 1. Please God let this be Rome II: Total War 2. Why not partner with another company and create a Total War game based off another IP, such as Lord of the Rings: Total War or Game of Thrones:Total War? I'd freaking love it if they did ether of those.
Yep. The struggles between the various chinese factions ,would be an ideal setting for a total war game. But wouldn't that be too similar with the Shogun setting ? What i would also like to see,is a total war based on the times of Ancient Egypt,minoan civilization and Hittites. I think it would be great. They were among the first civilizations in the Mediterranean , but still it was a really interesting period.
I've been waiting for a Chinese Dynastic version since Rome. Thought that would be the logical direction, not that I didn't burn hundreds of hours on Medievil II. If you want fantasy, get the Third Age mod (LOTR) that was very well done. Scale of Shogun 2 was way too small, now a China/Asiatic campaign... epic.
seeing a lot of demand for rome 2 and such an such...why? I'm sorry but I for one dont want the series to stagnate into a series that constantly reboots old games ... I'd like to see something new, like eygpt or ancient china perhaps. There are so many ancient civilizations I wanna see not just rome, medieval europe and japan over and over again thanks
i want rome or medieval. Preferebly rome. Saying that i have medieval 2 and i have never played it since my pc cant cope lol, special edition still in its box... that was hopefull when i bought it.
Great War. With the ability to conquer the entire planet cause the conquering land side is what makes people play for 6-8 hours straight. Or maybe visit some of the Fantasy Settings Like Greek/Roman/Egyptian/Norse/Asian/Mayan Mythology choose one and conquer the other across the known world.
what i really hope for is Rome 2 definantly full stop. id love if they do 1850s onwards best to stop before ww1 due to new weaponary. but if they can do it to make a modern era total war how long would the turn be 1 day or 3 months or 6 months even.
I hope they don't revisit one of the other installments (Rome, Empire, etc.). Don't get me wrong - those are great games. However, there are so many other eras that could easily get the Total War treatment. As others have pointed out, other eras could be the Warring States period in China, the Industrial Revolution (plenty of warfare and turmoil in the late 19th century), or the Classical period. But if we just get a retooling of one of the other games, meh, I'll probably get it.

@JimboXXL How is having two armies fire at each other boring? In both Empire and in other Total wars the goal of the bread and butter infantry (line infantry in empire and melee infantry in all the other games) was to hold the other side's infantry while cavalry looked for a flanking opportunity. Gameplay wise, combat boils down to the same thing. Actual melee combat is only slightly more visually exciting, and why would a real gamer care about that? I personally loved Empire.
Seeing some great guesses here. So long as they don't delve in to fantasy or sci-fi, I'm happy. I'm going with: Rome 2 Chinese Dynasties Persian Empire Civil War is too small of a theatre and it doesn't offer the same political and economic game as the past series. Would be cool to see since Empires did so well with rifle tactics. As much as I love Medieval 2, I really don't think Medieval 3 would conjure as much excitement as Rome 2.
Personally... I would love a new Rome: Total War. With what the new installments have this would be totally awesome, sea battles, better economic system.. I would love it. Also keep in mind that the number one complaint for shogun 2 is lack of diversity in units and playstyle between the clans. Rome 2 would solve that no problem.
@JimboXXL If you think standing in a line firing muskets involves no tactics, you're doing it wrong. I would love to see a new Rome 2, or a Medieval 3, with all the new technology and inclusions from Shogun 2. Eventually I'd like them to encompass the enlightenment period, with the very early firearms (while pikemen and cavalry were still very prevalent) and eventually caracole infantry and the such. The time period included the Ottomans besieging Vienna (twice) and the rise of Russia.
From japan they should go to China and include the battles between them and the Persians, they could call it "Total War Dynasty" the Chinese had a wide range of advanced military hardware like repeating crossbows
total war want be set in modern times. or even ww1/ww2. the series focuses on infantry battles and formations. what im saying is. your better off just buying company of heroes for ww2 (ww1 would be terrible, you do realise they just sat in trenches all day. BORING) and world in conflict for modern era (however i cant stand that game) i would like to see a modern RTS but not from the total war franchise. it really does'nt go. not sure where they will go from here.
if/when they make a new TW game it cant be with rifles n guns... u need the melee combat with all the different units, not just stand on a line and shoot at eachother and the best or biggest army wins, u need tactics like in shogun, rome and medieval. empire had boring combat resulting in auto resolve. Rome 2ftw
I surely hope they make Rome 2. If they put the same amount of effort and time into it as they did for Shogun 2, holly crap it would be epic!!
I admire Creative Assembly and love the Total War games, but ... I'm still waiting for a TW game with AI that doesn't cheat! :P
Redo of Rome or Empire would be great with the improvements they have made since either came out.
Another Medieval but maybe on the scale of Empire, obviously there would be no America but the world could be denser.
Repeat: Total War Whatever they call it you've already played it. The name changes, but the game stays the same.
