From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki apologizes for "technical difficulties" in last year's role-playing game, says not sure if studio will make another title in universe.
The existence of technical issues in a game as large as Dark Souls comes as little surprise, but for developer From Software, these headaches might prevent a sequel from seeing the light of day.
In an interview with Edge, From Software creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted there were numerous bugs in Dark Souls, and apologized to fans for this.
"Yes, there were technical difficulties," he said. "I don't believe that it's okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game--even in terms of budget and expectations. So we're very sorry for the trouble we've caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan."
When asked about the likelihood of From Software creating another game in the Dark Souls universe, Miyazaki said he's not sure it will happen, or if fans will forgive the studio for previous technical issues.
"We don't even know if we'll have another chance," he said. "We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes, so I cannot give an exact answer."
Technical issues do not spell doom for all large-scale games. The Fallout series, a franchise notorious for its widespread and sometimes comical bugs, has spawned numerous sequels despite these issues.
Dark Souls was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October to a glowing critical reception. It went on to ship more than 1.5 million units worldwide and was October's sixth-best-selling title.

i hope Mr. Miyazaki comes to the forums and reads exactly what the majority of the fans have to say about this masterpiece they've created, no one, or game is perfect, and to say one is, is pure idiocy. you simply learn from your mistakes, and capitalize on your success which i think would create a monster of a sequel, much like from demon to dark... IMO of course
Dark Souls is the best game ive ever played, no question. I barely noticed any "technical difficulites" whatsoever. please dont let that be your deciding factor to not make another Dark Souls game. I NEED more souls!
I'm just going to go out on a limb and say that Dark Souls and Demon Souls were the best 2 games in gaming history...for their respective genre. not sure what bugs dude is talking about. there were some issues with lag and target lock that were a bit frustrating but seriously, wgs when you find yourself playing 175 hours, the game ends, and you still want more. Seriously the best game i've ever played bar none. Cant believe the dude would even joke about not making a sequel. perhaps we need to make a petition for the 3rd one. somebody get on that please
We forgive you. Dark Souls is to Skyrim like Linux is to Windows. Sequel please, spiritual or otherwise!
I got the new PC release of Dark Souls and it has made me feel disenchanted with all other RPGs. No game has ever been so satisfying to play and do well at. No other game like it. The thought of there never being another like it, let alone a sequel of some kind, makes me feel like I'm stuck in a cage with "Generic RPG 3". I hope the devs realize the love that people have for the souls games despite the supposed bugs. I would pay top dollar for another work like this in a heartbeat. Don't make me get on my knees, just TAKE MY MONEY NAO!!!1!!
I have put so much time into this game and yet I don't think I've had enough. It's funny 130 hrs and I haven't completed it once, but I have four characters. Right now I'm a level 30 and am facing the four kings. It's hell...but the good kind.
Never played Demon Souls nor Dark Souls on the console (I have both PS3 and Xbox). But I heard and read so much about the game that I swore and hoped it will come out for PC someday. So when the game was announced that it would be ported over to PC I pre-ordered right way! I want to say I was not disappointed! The world is so large and the game so challenging it definitely was worth every penny! It has been a long time an RPG or any game for that matter that challenged me and make me dread every step into the game! I will definitely be looking forward to future expansions of this series! Thanks Bandai and From Software!

Dark Souls is one of THE best games I have ever played. Only matched with the Metal Gear Solid and Fallout Series, I truly felt I got my money's worth, and so much more. Still hoping on a Backstabbing nerf, I die way too much by those.
I really hope your next sequel will blow my mind. Take the time needed, not like CoD that comes out every year, but instead take 3 or 4 if that's what it takes. If anything, there's always patches and feedback to let From know what needs to be modified/nerfed.
@assshooter_2 Backstabs are only insanely powerful when the wolf ring is equipped. Example, you do a backstab that does 700 damage, but with wolf ring it does 1150 damage.
This game makes me feel like a kid again. So long has it been since I have played a game that is this challenging and when you finally beat an enemy you celebrate with joy. I was getting sick of the 6 hour cod campaigns and the 12 hour mass effect campaigns and then theres games that were too long like final fantasy XIII (after a while the battle system become so boring I did not even bother finishing the game despite enjoying the storyline). I have longed for a game with a campaign that no matter how skilled a player you are, you still find it very challenging. This is that game, I enjoyed it so much I am planning on buying demon's souls when I have fully maxed my pvp character on dark souls. Please, do not do a sequel for a while. Spend 4 years on development and make it absolutely ground-breaking, don't pull an ea and finish it within a year. Take your time, I will wait longer than duke nukem forever (which I did not even bother playing because of the hate its received) if thats what it takes. As long as it absolutely blows my mind more than dark souls did, you will raise the bar for rpgs everywhere and set a new standard in the industry!
hi boys.i need same help.how to point with small circle the enemies and how walking backwards?thanks
I would have to agree with everyone, Dark Souls being one of my favourite games.
BUT, there are still a lot of technical and gameplay issues. Soul farming is still there. The lag stab is still there. lag in general is still there. and this aint just me its pretty much every player I asked or talked to about this game. forest hunter farming needs to be sorted out. they need to either remove or nerf the backstab BIGTIME. you cant just have a good ol melee fight with anyone in this game, without some guy whose fifty feet away backstabbing you like a bloody bat outta hell. back stabbing should be capped per weapon or a new way of doing it needs to be created. it takes the fun out when you batter some people and one single backstab kills you. and im generally graceous when people beat me but when its through general cheating or them knowing they can lagstab, that p****s me off. Also, riposte should be capped to certain shields/ wepaons i.e a a big (weight) weapon can only be parried by a big shield. And for god sakes, try keep the pvp a bit more levelled. sick of fighting level 500+ characters.
But Im happy with the game lololololol
I forgive them, but I wont if they don't make another.I love both of the souls games. They are both incredibly amazing.
Dark Souls has quickly become both an addiction and my favorite game of all time. EVER. I don't care how many bugs it had or has (I have had no problem.... but I started playing a month or two ago and thus it was already patched up) it is an amazing and unparalleled experience. PLEASE MAKE A SEQUEL!!!!
he must be kidding!
dark souls is such a great game. it's so deep and it's so good that no one takes you by the hand, everything just happens by exploring without too much explaining.
this makes you hungry for more since you don't know what possibilties there are.
it's the same thing i love about elder scrolls: you can try out things and they surprisingly just work! :)
you also don't know what awaits when you step into the world, nothing gets spoiled by useless explanations.
just don't make the sequal smaller, i want more of everything that dark souls is offering to spend more time in this amazing thing!!!!
Dark Souls is without question the best video game ever made.
Please do us the honor of continuing this fabulous series (Demon Souls/Dark Souls) and give us all something to look forward to.
We will be awaiting eagerly.
Thank You From All Fans
Dark Souls is the best video game every made ... Period
Please allow all of us as fans the privilege of looking forward to & enjoying your next creation in the series.
We will all be awaiting eagerly...
I didn't encounter any bugs during my gameplay and even if there were/are some, it doesn't matter Dark Souls is up there with the legends of RPG's. I am a HUGE elder scrolls fan, there since the beggining, and played through morrowind, oblivion amd skyrim atleast a dozen times each, but I would still say that Dark Souls is just as good.
My only challenge to the creators of Dark Souls is... CAN YOU MAKE IT BETTER THAN ELDER SCROLLS. Imo this game has a huge potential to be the best rpg ever. Please make Dark Souls II.
-Sincerely, Every RPG fan ever
What bugs and and errors are they talking about? I don't remember having any problems. Dark Souls is one of the best games I have played in years. It would be a shame it they decide not to make another game in the Dark Souls world because of these "technical issues" just take a look at Skyrim I had to restart the game after about 50 hours because of bugged quests. Just goes to show how much From Software cares about their fans, we need more developers like them these days.
Dark Souls was one of the most awesome games many of us have ever played. For me, it has been the most amazing game since Baldur's Gate II. From Software, you must understand that you conquered a horde of fanatic players, that will surely welcome a sequel to this brillant series! Dark Souls may not be a game for everyone's taste, but it is THE BEST game for those who enjoy hardcore-action games. The only reason why you received so many complaints on technical issues is the fact that most of us got so envolved with the gaming experience that we wanted to push it to perfection!! I deeply hope that you don't give up on us for so little. We wouldn't forgive you for quitting like that. That's exactly the opposite attitude we found in Dark Souls. No matter how bloody difficult the challenge may seem, get back on your feet and try it again!!!
Gets dark souls (heard its amazing difficult game) eager to play... Goes home, plays it... Smiling, upset no death so far... 10 minutes later... WTF! 100 hours in... Killing smough, he jumps up in the air, preparing to sit on my face with lightning cheeks of death, lands on me... Still alive, but so I thought... Fell through the ground and died.... I sit the questioning and pissed... Humanity of 10 and so many souls gone.... I'm ready to go back to fight, sprints through the level killing all in my way, invaded by phantom... Does a 2 second lag, ends up behind me,stabs me....proceeds to Kill me and makes me to begin to yell.... I stop... And think, that this is the reason I got this Game.... I become happy, but still upset..rage quits to main menu and creats new game and in 10 hours... I'm where I was but as a new person.... I love the game. Glitch or no glitch, should not stop anyone.... I mean... Look at halo 2! Super jumping every where! Skyrim, glitches everywhere including the giants smacking me a 1000feet in the air and so i fall to my death... I need more souls.... Souls.... Come onto me! ( quote by nightmare )
Don't let the mess of broken controllers on the ground in front of my TV fool you From Soft, They are not due to the bugs (I don't honestly recall any incredibly distracting bugs), it is due to the awesomeness that is Dark Souls (and the fact that I died to that stupid Capra demon boss and Ornstein at least 20 times each).
But keep up the good work From Soft, the feeling of accomplishment after beating this game a couple of times was one of the best of any game I've played.
I found relatively few bugs in Dark Souls and none of them were game breakers. Even with the bugs I'd pre-order a Dark Souls sequel any day of the week. We, as a gamer community, NEED games like this. Depth, superior character progression, solid combat, high difficulty, and no hand-holding are the qualities that make this game top notch. Make another one with bugs and I'll gladly eat 'em.
Forgive for what? I don't even remember any bugs. I just remember an unbelievably fun (albeit a tad frusterating!) game. Please do give me another sir.
Dark Souls had everything that I have ever wanted from a video game... The difficulty, the exploration, the secrets, the depth... right down to the soundtrack composed by one of the very best - Motoi Sakuraba. For 20 years I have played videogames passionately, and now after buying a ps3 in 2012 I found the game of my life. The game that possesses all the qualities of my visions of video-game perfection. In fact, I now feel as though I could tell anyone that; "If you are to play ONE video-game in your life, make damn sure that you play Dark Souls."Because Dark Souls really represents everything that was ever good and glorious about gaming. Here´s to hoping that From Software is not giving up on this goldmine, even though I cannot imagine how Dark Souls could ever be trumphed by a sequel... If anyone can do it though, it´s them! So here´s hoping for more gaming bliss in the near future!Oh, and a little suggestion from myself: If I were to work on another game in the "series", I might have considered a prequel rather than a sequel!
Bugs!? You obviously haven't played Skyrim. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are my favorite RPG's of all-time! Please, please, please keep making these awesome games!
I just got the game a few weeks ago. I have found zero bugs, and it is in fact, the best game I have ever played. I hope that they continue to make dark souls games in the future.
Its true that the game online pvp can get buggy but that shouldnt be a factor in the decission making of another souls game. Pvp can be frustrating at times because of all the lag going on but yet it can also be the most heart pounding action youll get out of any videogames out there. Im definetly waiting for the next Demons Souls so From Software dont keep me waiting too long. Im sure all your fans are with me in that the more Souls sequels and spiritual successors the better.
"Its fantastic in its scope and death" Even if you meant to say depth, I think that sentence fits the game very well.
I love this game. Its fantastic in its scope and death and cant wait for the sequel to come out. The guy and team who created this have a wealth of imagination that we are lucky enough to be able to tap into.
I would pre-order any sequel to Dark Souls as soon as it was available. Were there issues? Sure - but every game has issues - show me one that hasn't? When you blaze a new path, you're bound to take a few wrong turns along the way - but you don't let that stop you from getting where you're going.
dang it, the japs have moral standards that put to shame the americans on just about every level. Forget about the fact that after the tsunami that honest people were returning millions of dollars, something i doubt would happen in america, they now top it off with icing on the cake and do something like this... They make one of the best games i've ever played in recent memory and have a few glitches which is understandable, and think we would not forgive them /facepalm dang it!!! we love that game and so of course we forgive you -_- I know that your game is built upon "unforgiveness" but trust me, we still know how to forgive IRL !!!! SO PLLEEEAASSSEEE make another one, ohhh please :)
i really hope they do reconsider and make a sequel.. i had put so much time into dark souls and apart from multiplayer based games it is by far my most played game in the past few years. I even went 80 hours and had my file corrupted but that didnt stop me i made another character and played through it all surpassing 80 hours by far.
i haven't been hooked on a game as much as i was hooked on dark souls since the sega genesis days. i sure hope they make a sequel. i didn't play skyrim a fraction as much as i played dark souls. it's like some tripped out pink floyd dream or something. my game of the decade.
@babyrhinos ya, I agree, Skyrim was a mediocre game. Truly, I did play 110 hours, that were quite enjoyed. But Bethesda has done nothing new with that sereies since Morrowind. Dark Souls, is the first Ive played (I heard there was a Demons Souls). It has been, and still is, one of the best gaming experiences Ive had. Its truly a RPG, with lots of excellent combat, and with many intense creative worlds and enemies to explore. Giving all the more imaginative ways to die. Ive played the game at least 70 hours, and am not near beating it. My character is eventhat good yet, im struggling to survive my current battles. That is what makes this game so great. Skyrim, I got my archery to 100, and could win any battle with ease. Not so in dark souls. So for the people of Software, I forgive you of the little errors ( slow frame rate, a sometimes lethal target lock) and encourage you to make another Souls game, that will amaze me again, and help me realize that some video games are still worth playing.
The souls series is amazing but yes, I agree with the fact that you are unsure on a release of another sequel. I want another challenge from you. You want to leave the souls series? Fine! But please give us other games so challenging and improve this already amazing online that you created. There is really nothing to forgive since you improved your games in such a wonderful way. I don't even remember when I tried so hard to beat a game and I'm into games since I was 7 years old (I will be 30 soon), so keep up with the good work you did so far and keep on making us sweat to defeat a boss or progress in the game.
