EA: Connected TV a 'major opportunity' for gaming

Senior director of corporate communications at publisher says cloud-gaming through TV a "long-term opportunity" that could arrive by 2017.
Earlier today, sources told Bloomberg that current platform holders Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo could soon be under pressure from major cable companies like Verizon and Comcast, which are reportedly looking to expand into cloud-gaming. Electronic Arts was specifically called out in the report as a potential partner, and at the time, the studio had nothing to say. But that has changed.
EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg told GameSpot today that connected TV experiences like those mentioned in the report, while a potentially lucrative prospect, are not one of the company's immediate objectives.
“Connected TV represents a major opportunity for gaming on the five-year horizon," Reseburg said. "It’s long-term opportunity, but it’s another technology that has a lot of potential to dramatically expand our audience.”
If the report proves accurate, Verizon, Comcast, AT&T, and Time Warner will all launch their own cloud-gaming efforts by 2014. Players would use generic controllers instead of inputs from Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo, and some of these carriers are reportedly exploring software that turns smartphones into controllers.

1 Like Cloud gaming would suck a$$, it's cool your there playing Halo 25 online with friends in a ranked match and it's a heated battle and your connection goes out for a couple seconds costing you the match....come to find out it was road construction a block over that caused the outage.....this crap happens already under normal conditions....
Also I haven't subscribed to cable since 1999 and what I've seen of TV it's gotten worse that when I left. I do download shows that interest me though...
NCIS, NCIS LA, Sons Of Anarchy, Walking Dead, I used to get Terminator when it was on and I go for a lot of older shows if I can find them.....
I'd never get a sub for cable just to play games....

3 Like Cloud streaming services for games? Not for me, won't even look at them until they find a way to make mods work with them. Can you imagine a world where a massive Skyrim style game launched that you couldn't mod?

Will it be the end of the pc ??? storage media needed only in the tv's with cloud storage accompanying it...? it takes soooo long though, get on with it so technology can move forward b4 i die !!! i want floating cars i want holographic interface gaming :)

4 Like The whole end game of the Cloud computing mantra is to empower the publishers, and will turn gaming into a rental service (Paying to play games on a remote server - you own nothing). I will probably give up on gaming when this eventuates.
