Battlefield 3 Premium-like services could integrate into other company properties, EA Labels president says.
More subscription services like Battlefield 3 Premium sound like a good deal to EA Labels president Frank Gibeau, according to a GamesIndustry International interview. Gibeau said the onetime purchase subscription for current and upcoming Battlefield 3 downloadable content could lead to similar deals for other Electronic Arts properties.
"We actually think our Premium service exceeds what Elite does--from a value standpoint, from a content standpoint, and longer term we think that we can bring more properties into that offering, and that'll be great for the business," Gibeau said.
While EA had considered the service before the game's launch, it took additional time to prepare, he said.
"This is an industry where people have a lot of one-upsmanship, and if somebody innovates, you match it or you exceed it."
Battlefield 3 Premium, which topped 800,000 subscribers paying a onetime fee of $50 within its first two weeks of availability, followed last year's EA Sports Season Ticket. By comparison, Activision's $50 Call of Duty: Elite annual subscription for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has attracted 2 million paying members since its launch in November. Like Battlefield 3 Premium, Call of Duty: Elite grants users access to a stream of map packs and other perks.
I see more and more gamers screaming "boycot EA!" Im happy to see this, but people have to remember, EA isnt the first company to be boycotted. If a boycot is successful, there are strategies to fight off such a protest. EA will most likely go dark for a year then change their name. Also, if they are as big as alot of people say they are, EA will pay to hide their image. Dont be surprise if one day articles like these are hard to find. Just be aware, if you want to boycot a company, make sure thoroughly do your research. You might be surprise as how many products EA has influence on. They might be listed as "third-party investors or beneficiary."
@AceMarine45 C'mon, Don't be so negative on the gaming future, EA is not entirely that big, Apple for example is one of the top leading Company in electronic development and it is still struggling with Window while Bill Gates Tablets and phones still not gaining momentum in the market, made EA felt that impact is essential, sure maybe not big enough to topple them off, but them realized they shouldn't open their mouth whenever they like, let the game developers talk instead of them. Yeah EA got many investing besides gaming, so........ submit to them to their domination????? T-T
I miss those days when devs made games cause they loved (microprose) them and wanted to give people the best experience possible. I am all for them paying the bills and even making sweet cash but DLC is getting more and more ridiculous each year. And EA knows how to milk it man. Sims 3 has what 30,000 "expansions"? and they just keep releasing more lame games and killing more classic franchises. Most of their games are extremly shallow and you can tell that if they gave their devs the time to actually make games better they could be so much more.
The game your picture displayed, has DLC or expansion no more than 3 but the game last me till this very day, I love Creative Assembly game which actually felt like it was a full game. And Focus Entertainment and Eugene System is even better, keep giving us free DLC and help fix the game despite its being, that's it, I'm going to get my second Wargame European Escalation regardless of discount or not, cause that game is incredibly good and yet their dlc is absolutely free, surprised, check STEAM! But when a company is getting fat, you know they will milk us to death, so I keep my finger cross.
I can see it already with the game FIFA... buy the game for £60, each team cost £1 and each player cost 50p.... that is the future of that game
EA may have gone greedy but i is still one of my favorite gaming company, they can come with as many DLC subscription as they want, but that doesnt mean that we always have to get it, beside Battlefield 3 is EA most popular game right now and i dont think that any other game's DLC subscription can top Battlefield 3 Premium
Subscription Deals only work if you are offering MORE.
I.E All the new map packs for less when added up.
I judge it by the content/value,if they don't come up to scratch,NO SALE.
Um.... wow. EA is openly greedy for the customers money now. Well, I'll tell you one thing; after that debacle called "Mass Effect 3" neither EA nor BioWare will ever get their grubby hands into my purse again.
Wasn't EA voted worst company of the year last year?
They are basically saying if you pay double what the game is worth, you can download all their patches free.
Screw you EA.
Why not give us free game content? Like Valve, who just updated their almost 5 year old game (TF2) with a 3GB patch last month.
I thought that there can be nothing worse left for EA than sucking babies blood . Turns out there is.
Are there other industries in which the chief players openly talk about ways to nickel and dime their customers to death?
Because I can't think of any.
"More subscription services like Battlefield 3 Premium sound like a good deal to EA Labels president Frank Gibeau."
Oh yeah? Sounds like a good deal to EA, but is it a good deal for the customer?
In a related note, I received an email from Origin on my birthday congratulating me and giving me a 25% off coupon for some content on the store. So, me strongly considering taking the bait, I roam the Origin store to see what I could use it on and noticed SimCity (I like that stuff). However, this is EA so I had to read the terms of service at the bottom of the email for the lulz. And boy, did I lol.
The following provision had me going:
"...Excludes Star Wars® the Old Republic?, pre-orders, games released within 30 days of your purchase, Valve games, partner titles distributed by Origin, virtual currency and game time codes."
In other words, EA: "Don't buy anything from other makers and give us all your money, we don't feel like sharing profits."
And they sell Valve games. That's Gabe Newell not so subtly telling EA that he's blowing them up.
Gotta love EA. Atleast they have the nutts to outright tell the customer that they'll gouge their wallets every chance they possible can. Don't like their philosophy? Don't buy the games they publish. Anything else falls means zip to them. They know they can't salvage their reputation, all they have left is making as much money as legally possible.
"You already bought the game; now buy it again for the rest of the content"... reason i sold my shit. fuck it.
Well, EA was awarded with the "worst company of the year" award not because of what they did (some banks did a lot worse), but because of their obvious philosophy towards the customers, which is basically looking from the top and patting them on the heads saying "there, there, give us your money and shut up".
I hate EAs cash shop for B3 i mean unlock all the weapons for some real money..
I have not played the game since they did that..
Saying that their premium service thing is not a bad deal $50 or whatever and you get all the exp packs when they are released. They have said how many exp packs there will be so its just like pre-ordering them all... I think if they had just called it an exp pack pre-order then everyone would have been ok about it lol..
@Caldrin I miss the days "Ex Packs" just cost us 20$ or less and PC games were 50$ or less.. Premium seems like a good deal, but after thinking about how overpriced "Ex-Packs" are now (50$ for BF3's Ex-Packs each) it just makes it.. Not even worthwhile..
Sigh, fuck EA, fuck EA FUCK EA, now I don't think I will be buying any more Battlefield series. Since they only know how to fuck up the game, suck our money and don't even have the decency to fix the bloody game, its been 3months since my last game session and they still don't fucking fix the server, why we can't just be left alone with a clean game but added with additional bullshit content that occupy my pc hardrive space while doesn't do any good to me? Why the fuck they don't just made the content a separate thing and made it an optional downloadable content only if you buy it?!? I wanted for a phantom 3GB update only to realized the fucking game is not playable after patch!
Let me guess... You are only going to buy Activision products for now on? Like call of duty?
@AceMarine45 But hey, if I were a 10 year old boy, I will play it, but none of the game will be a legit version :P On COD Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3, both I played from my university roommate, who rich enough to own the entire COD series, including the very first version. While the last COD was Modern Warfare2, and my first was a PS2 COD:Big Red One, which was a spin off, but I loved it, it reminds me that the PS2 spinoff are actually better than the last two COD games.
@AceMarine45 Not giving me the eyesore, sorry >_<
@AceMarine45 Ahhh, you my friend made me remember the good old days, back then Activision logo is still give me the eye sore and that Infinity Ward still holds the game on its ground, I love vehicle section perticularyl the PC Call of Duty where you played the Russian or Germans but what I truly love was the character of those game, some of spinoff didn't gain much fame, but the game has characteristic, funny and sometimes feel how human they are, Price and Soap are first human, then they are more Spartan and finally are Superman with guns on crazy vengence and revenge O_o, personally they story is getting more and more Gears of War type screwed and surprisingly getting shorter as well.
I have played every call of duty game but the last two, and the one coming out soon (which im not buying either). Call of duty hasnt been the same since they removed vehicles from the series. The orginal call of duty which followed easy company in WW2, was by far the best CoD, followed by World At War. By the way, yes call of duty use to have vehicles in multiplayer.
@AceMarine45 Hell yeah! I WILL, I MEAN, WHO WILL ACTUALLY BUY ACTIVISION made SHIT, they fucking fired their COD producer, made COD a streamline shooter of non-innovation, made incredibly lame premium edition and made you pay for that crappy shit so that you can wear their pants while others start with water pistol, remove the LAN system which made my COD4 a wonderful time, made me wait for a fucking respond in waiting queue on the server until I gave up or it crash in mid game, making Price shit himself over and over and over again, the next will be that Black Ops fuckhead, so yeah, I WILL BUY Activision COD.
i felt bad about buying bf3 the long ago EA is very good at fucking things up if the next battle field game will use origin and browser serch bull crap EA can burn in hell i will never ever buy a game on that piece of shit origin again leave alone this new crap they are pushing
I agree with you to some extent.
But - "I can't think of anything else they make I want to play and would skip mass effect 3 if I hadn't played through the first two." - Whaat?
ME3 was a good game and worth the buck in my opinion, whats not is the endless DLC's to multiplayer games while they don't host the servers. Screwing up balance between buyer and not-buyer.
I don't mind more maps, where those with the DLC can play with fancy new weapons, but when they can then enter old maps with those weapons, and no official servers are stopping this. If everyone else have the DLC in a multiplayer game, you are peer pressured into buying it too, or so you think. If you keep dieing to pricks with weapons you haven't seen before, I recon, you are gonna look up how to get those cause they got to be more powerful than yours.
Another thing is us. We are the ones paying 2 bucks every other week for a new Hat to wear on TF2 or another Hero in LoL. Buying a game is not just buying a game anymore, after you buy it, its f2p wether you like it or not, they are going to ask you for more money, ofc they are. Why, cause 10% will get mad, 40% wont mind and 50% will buy that stupid Hat, Map, Weapon or anything else they can hang on the wall called "IPwnU".
(Like all other statistics on the Web, those are made up :)
@stoposto Remember EA is heading into the F2P scheme with microtransactions but you can already tell that its going to turn out like battlefeild pay to win.
I hate EA's scheme to take my money as much as the next guy. But, saying battlefield 3 is "pay to win" is completely moronic. You either never played Battlefield 3 or your just making up shit to get "likes." Infact, most people consider the orginial weapons such as the M4A1, and AEK-971, as one of the best carbines and assault rifles in the game. There are even people with 4000 kills with the M4A1...
@AceMarine45 I score 400 kills with my AEK-971 rifle(looks like one) and originally I hate that rifle in Bad Company 2 cause it was ugly as hell, but now I'm crippling rely on it whenever i'm playing as assault medic or assault grenade. Still, making us downloaded useless DLC and only usable only if you pay it is pissing people off, you know.....
Well bad example with the Hat and Hero cause those games were both f2p from start if i remember correctly. But then think COD maps, or BF3 expansions. I just think an expansion is something that works in singleplayer or multiplayer were the people arent against you.
A more simple way to put it (ohh you are gonnna hate me for this)
In WoW if you could enter lvl 60 Battlegrounds at lvl 70 cause you had the expansion while they didn't. In BF3 and the like, that's possible.
Do'h -.- all that was ment as a reply to a comment futher down.
