G4 becomes Esquire Network April 22

Gaming-centered network will cease to exist this spring; new channel described as "an upscale Bravo for men."
The reports were right. The gaming-focused G4 television network will become the Esquire Network on April 22, according to a New York Times report. NBC Universal will announce the deal today with Esquire magazine owner Hearst Magazines.
NBC executives described the new network as "an upscale Bravo for men,” and one that will appeal to "the modern man, what being a man today is all about."
According to the report, NBC is hoping to attract a "more educated, affluent, sophisticated" male viewer to the Esquire Network. This will include shows aimed at areas of interest like cars, politics, world affairs, travel, fashion, and cooking.
The Esquire Network does not have any gaming-focused programming lined up. According to NBC programming executive Bonnie Hammer, the network had been long aware of the difficulty associated with aiming programming at gamers.
"Realistically, guys who are into gaming are not necessarily watching television," she said. “If this was going to come under my portfolio, I'm a little brand crazy, so I said, let's create a real brand, define a space, understand who we are programming for."

1 Like G4 has become a channel for everything but gaming, but to make another boring channel with topics that are already covered by just about every other station, I would have liked a channel focused solely on gaming instead. Oh well.
And the years-long downfall of this channel since G4 took over TechTV will be complete. Real shame, too. Missed Cinematech. Missed X-Play (Pre-G4). Missed Robot Wars (My personal favorite non-video game-related show at that time). Even a few G4 programs I'll actually miss (Code Monkeys, Human Wrecking Balls, Ninja Warrior (AKA "Sasuke" in Japan)).
The way some cable networks are now working, airing multiple hours of a single show every day, leaves me concerned about the future of cable TV entertainment.

Considering a majority of the people who watch G4 are highly educated as is I guess you need 2 masters to be considered "educated" now. "Realistically, guys who are into gaming are not necessarily watching television." That's weird, because depending on what I am playing, I do both. Its called multitasking. I guess NBC is too "educated" to do that. And of course you had issues aiming the channel at gamers. You changed TechTV to G4 and removed some good shows to add movies from 1973 and continued to do so over the years. NBC can go fuck them selves IMO. Replace a gaming/technology channel to a GQ/Esquire/Metro-sexual one? Good luck gaining your quota outside the east cost.

G4 had by far the most extensive coverage of E3 on TV. I know Spike covered a little bit of it, but nothing like G4. Where can I go for my coverage, and I don't want to watch it on a computer screen. Hell, where can I go to get any sort of video game programming on TV?
1 Like @tightwad34 Revision 3 Games, As Adam Sessler, and most of the tech tv people have already went over to there. Check out shows, Sessler's something, Casual Fridays, Destructoid, and specials like DICE and CES coverage. It is like watching g4 and tech tv again but without all of the commercials and cops episodes; and sadly T&A service by candice bailey and Underwood big boobies. I will miss that part of g4 but I just put up another window of girls on trampolines while I watch Rev3games in the first window.

G4 is coming under new management, fine, take it and do with it as you will. I harbored no attachment. But to say that what gamers are watching is irrelevant, that we are in our own little worlds, is rather insulting coming from someone who's caught up in the rat race of consumerism and materialism.
Fashion, and cooking, honestly, because nothing says masculinity more than those activities.
Politics and world affairs? Whoa! Look out! We're dealing with someone who dabbles in things of grandeur. Way too big for my little gamer mind.

This will be a network where news will be in regards to who is making the best new california blush wine instead of sports and who is getting traded. Foreign news will be in regards to fall fashion not news in war zones.
In other words Tom Cruise and that guy from america's got talent or fox idle show have now got their own network, enjoy america and I we wonder why people around the world are fitting themselves up for vests.

1 Like My favorite thing about this channel, when they still had it, it was that show called ICoN. They had allot good icons episodes. They cancel the show and reduse the games programing, and started adding shows that had nothing to do with video games, and that's whe the channel started going down hill.
yea its sad i remember watching the first day and they had that show that was back in the 80's of people playing the arcade games then seeing young kevin so long ago well they cant take this channel and shove it up there esquire i wont be watching
7 Like What we really need is a Man network, and no I'm not talking about "spiketv" man network. But man networks that play classic manly tv shows, like Magnum PI, Macguyver, Miami Vice, China Beach, re-runs of Burt Reynolds movies all night after midnight.
4 Like It was a nitsche channel in a pond filled with the generic. Sure it didnt have a massive audiance, but it was nice to know that I could turn on the telivision for video game reviews and news. Weird Anime i wouldnt watch anywhere else. Cinematech which was a show that was dedicated to not just videogames but presenting the games as a form of art mishmashed in a beautiful serene way that really made my brain melt. Ninja Warrior! They took a show strait from japan and edited it, but really made it fun and entertaining to watch with any who would be willing to watch it. G4tv at its best, was a collection of some of the best underrated programming on telivision. my one problem with g4 was that it watered its product down over time rather than embrace its uniqueness. It needed more code monkeys, more stuff from japan, and more stuff dealing with the game industry. Im sorry but g4/tech tv was a big part of my growing up as a gamer.

6 Like The channel kinda went to hell when Adam and Kevin left their shows. Regardless, so many memories tied in with G4 and especially TechTV. From the sounds of it, I will not be giving this Esquire nonsense any sort of chance.

@Strider8009 @ResEv They lost a lot of good shows when they became G4 but X-Play and AOTS were still decent imo, even if they were the only two shows worth watching. If you didn't like them then that's your opinion.
