Grand Theft Auto V will "blow everyone away" on 360 and PS3, says Take-Two CEO, but possibility of a next-gen GTAV not ruled out.
Rockstar publisher Take-Two believes releasing Grand Theft Auto V close to the rumoured launch of the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation won't negatively affect interest in the game from consumers.
Take-Two was asked during the company's Q3 financial call last night about the prospect of Grand Theft Auto V taking the same kind of cross-generational stance that developers like Bungie and DICE are said to be using. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick remained firm that Rockstar's latest game would do absolutely fine on current-gen platforms.
"Let's have a little gentlemen's bet," he said. "Bet there is not one gamer who's going to sit out of Grand Theft Auto V hoping that something down the road is going to come along that's better. Grand Theft Auto V is going to blow everyone away, and it will be in the market in September."
Zelnick didn't rule out the possibility of the series going next-gen, as one analyst predicted last week, and said the publisher was planning its future as well as it could. "In terms of strategy around current-gen and next-gen, we have to wait for the announcements," he said.
"Look, we're always looking over our shoulder. I'm a big believer that arrogance is the enemy of continued success. But we are planning as well as we can, and we think we are extremely well positioned."
GTAV will be released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.
Elsewhere in Take-Two's earnings call the publisher reported a 148 per cent rise in profits and noted that Borderlands 2 has now shipped 6 million copies.

my guess is by september another 6 months wait there will be an additional 10 million copies sold upon the original said 18 million , I am happy for them and be much happier to then be able to finally play and not read and listen ! I have been out of school for a long time !!!
What he should have bet that those that own current gen consoles will most likely by both versions once they can afford the newer consoles. That;s what I'm going to do...If the next consoles don't require always on internet and allow used games.
lol. let's make it clear - no september launch for sure, maybe november-december just test it on new hardware. and then - we are sorry, folks, but you'll have to buy a new console to play. they won't miss opportunity to make it launch title for either ps4 or next xbox.
2 Like @Skakruk well, let's take a step back and think about this for a second. if they don't release it for ps3 xbox, then they are losing a ridiculous amount of money right there. many gamers are not just going to pony up $600 - $1100 for a new console just to play this game.
@unwell-7 @Skakruk $600-$1100? What console in the world will cost that? Sony will not make the same mistake they did at PS3 launch. PS4 will not be over $550-$580, probably will not even reach this price. Another thing is that PS3 was way more expensive and powerful than PS2. It was 8 cores when PCs were dual or single core. PS4 is another 8-core platform. I mean, it is not more powerful than a good computer.
@capyvaraepg Ive heard that the ps4 will be more powerful then most modern computers so that tells me right away that the price is probably not going to be cheap. Have to agree with unwell-7 they are probably going to sell it 400 minimum or more. personally i dont have that kind of money yet.. So if they launch it only ps4 ill probably cry myself to sleep lol
Please get off their jocks. They know what they are doing and won't stop until they have every reason to believe we will love this game. Who gives a shit if it's on the next generation. They will make a GTA for it, maybe in 4 years or whatever, but oh well. There will be plenty to keep us busy until then.

A pretty stupid statement to say that no one would wait, if there was indeed a next gen version, people WOULD wait, I brought my PS3 because GTA4 and MGS3 came out on it, yeah I had to wait till I could afford it but so what, it was worth it.
That said, obviously in the current climate people wont be able to afford the next gen consoles, so obviously they're more likely to make bigger sales on current gen, and will surely break many records, but its hardly honest when they'll just release an even better GTA on the next gen eventually...

4 Like I don't know about the rest of you, but I know I won't be waiting around to see if GTA V comes to the PS4 or Xbox 720. I'll be getting the PS3 version as soon as it launches.

It'l be the last major game of the current gen.
To port it into next gen systems would be pointless, not when they could develop brand new games that actually use the new systems to their full advantage. I can't imagine the pay off for multi-gen systems would be worth it, or even profitable. Some people would wait, others won't. It seems far to uncertain from a consumer view, although they might know something we don't.
If the new systems, microsoft especially, are backwards compatible then it would be a complete waste of time. Perhaps that is what they are waiting to find out.

1) A PC version of GTA V is surely coming down the line;
2) If there is a PC version, it will be a piece of cake to port it to PS4/Xbox 720 x86 hardware
3) It'll take 3-4 more years to make GTA 6. Might as well sell GTA V on PS4-720 from 2013-2016 than make $0 on the sales on those consoles.
I doubt it'll go next gen for the mere fact of the user base and money profit issue! When the new consoles arrive, they'd tend to be a bit more on the expensive side so most gamers will still be on that current gen fix and besides that, the user base on current gen would be waaaaaay larger which means more cash for the company so don't think they'd waste time making a next gen version! I won't rule out the fact that you can possibly see it on the next round of consoles though, just don't expect anything too special about it if you do, perhaps a little graphical tweaking here and there and a few additional content but that's about it i mean i'm sure the question has crossed R* of why port over or develop and already practically completed what was meant to be a current gen game over to that of next gen when we can take advantage of next gen hardware by making an entirely new GTA game from scratch?
Yeah, there's no way I'm going to wait around just to see if they announce anything months after the game is all ready released. I think it will play just fine on the PS3/360. I'm sure it will be a nice upgrade from GTAIV, which surprisingly came out almost 5 years ago now.
Duh? I already planned on buying it twice: once for current gen when it comes out in September, then once more on PC once that version comes out in 2014 or whenever. However if it comes out on next gen consoles the same time it comes out on PC, I'll just buy that version instead, so I don't have to rebuild my PC, since it already can't run GTA4 for shit. I wasn't planning on building a new PC until 18 to 24 months after next gen consoles come out. That way I don't run into a brick wall again trying to play next gen console ports, like I did with GTA4 this generation. And by then it'll probably have gone on sale for $20 or less on Steam.
1 Like If by the time GTAV is actually released they announce that there will indeed be a version for the next gen consoles then I may wait for it. I always prefer to have the best possible version of any product.
If no next gen version is announced by the time GTAV comes out I'll get it anyway and then later buy the next gen edition. It wouldn't be the first time I've traded in a GTA for a copy on a different machine. I got rid of the PSP games when they released them on PS2.

1 Like GTA V already looks ridiculous. I'm sure a next gen port would just have better details and lightning. Nothing mind blowing compared to the current gen versions.
@abnergoinbig It an open world. The graphics won't look mind blowing but it certainly doesn't look ridiculous.
1 Like @abnergoinbig I don't care much about graphics, but I really think that GTA for PS3 will be better because they know the system already and that makes it easier to develop. If they make a "port" for the new gen, I prefer the PS3 version, but if they make a whole new game specific for the new system the new question will be: How long to be ready ?
3 Like @dalua360 @abnergoinbig You say that now but when you see it on the next gen hardware I bet you won't feel the same way. It's like looking at Halo 1 vs Halo 3 or Half Life vs HL 2. Everything changes on new hardware. But it's more than just the graphics. It's the physics, the size of the world, the audio, the number of NPC's on the screen, ect, ect. Better hardware means everything potentially gets better not just how it looks. It opens up new possibilities that just weren't there with weaker hardware. For GTA it will mean longer, clearer draw distances, less pop-in, sharper images, better overall performance, quicker load times, smoother rendering, ect, ect. So much can change that will improve the game as a whole. I have no idea why any gamer wouldn't crave that change. Would you really want to go back to the GTA III engine now that you've seen what is possible on the current systems. Now imagine that happening again on the next system. That's where it's headed. Progress is good.

Like I said before on other comments, if R* can make this game for the new gen without just making a port, then yes, I vote for the new gen then. The problem is that I don't believe they can do that very fast because the game is already programmed for current consoles, and the money and time to make a good, stable and legit version for new gen would be the same as start to develop a game from the scratch ( assuming the game is already half developed at least ). I assumed that because most of the games from R* took about 4 years of development ( from the storyboards ), and the people from R* never were the type to think only about profit like the people from EA for example. I believe if R* could make a fast good version for new gen, they would, but if they can't, due to all the learning process, than I think they will launch this game on something they are very confidente to work with. But it's only my opinion.

2 Like They would if they were smart. This gen's on it's last legs. Hell, even GTA IV had severe limitations due to the pitiful ammount of ram on the consoles. That's why there are still only a few car models on the streets at a time, just like PS2.
Rockstar need to start developing their games for pc, and downscale them to consoles. It just makes more sense.

I can see this date being pushed back also, possibly do a Boishock and just keep pushing back by a couple of months each time to keep people interested and bring out on next gen console
This is how I see its gonna play out. GTAV for the PS3 & XBOX360, come 2014, GTAV GOTY Edition for the Next-Gen Consoles + PC.
I think Sony has done a deal with them for their next gen console, to release the game later to coincide with ps4s release and have GTA V ready for its launch. 2 Like I always laugh when they use the term next gen with a console. A console is always last Gen. When the new consoles come out they will not be one third as powerful as my PC.Not hating but it's just the truth.
@Maxxgold @SythisTaru your four GTX 690s running in Quad SLI sounds great on paper but no current game is going to utilize the full potential of that machine.
Yes, the new consoles will have less raw hardware power than your PC, but a few years down the line the consoles will be able to deliver games that look much, much better than anything on PC right now.
Developers will never fully optimize their games for your high-end PC the way they do with consoles.
And besides which, the rumored specs for the new consoles don't seem "last gen", they look more like a high-end 2010/2011 gaming PC, or something that would be considered mid-range now.
@Spartan_418 On the average gaming PC, yes console will look better or the same for a small while. It won't last long though. Also, the main reason to get PC isn't for the graphics. It's all about control, in my honest opinion. Graphics are secondary to being able to tweak everything and download/create community made content.
@Maxxgold @SythisTaru Well modern PCs have so much of power that hardly any game utilizes it to the absolute limit while developers are squeezing every last bit of juice left in the current consoles and am very excited for next gen :).Not hating but it's just the truth.
@SythisTaru I'm a console player, but without taking in consideration the differences in power, I agree with you even because it takes a lot of time to master the programming and development of games for new consoles, and the PC is already a very well know platform to work! That's why I'm supporting the release for this current generation.
