Sony addresses "offensive" trophy for upcoming PlayStation 3 game, will rename it to "Bros Before Foes" through upcoming patch.
God of War: Ascension developer Sony Santa Monica today confirmed that the game's "Bros before Hos" trophy will be altered through an upcoming patch. Once gamers apply the patch, the trophy will become "Bros Before Foes," according to Joystiq.
The developer provided a statement to GameSpot on the matter, saying after concerns were raised to the studio, the decision was made to alter the "offensive" trophy title.
"We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies. The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game," Sony Santa Monica's statement reads.
"We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created," the statement goes on. "As such, we've addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question."
Joystiq reports that the trophy is unlocked when players vanquish Fury, one of the game's female antagonists.
God of War: Ascension launches tomorrow exclusively for the PlayStation 3. For more, check out GameSpot's review.
I'm guessing this was caused by an 8 y/o kid playing the game, getting the trophy, and then parroting this off at the schoolyard. Of course, a teacher learns of this, contacts the parents of said kid, and the parents are aghast at the idea this video game was the source of such obscenity spewing from their precious child's mouth. yada yada yada, new patch.
And here I was thinking they were just gonna fix the spelling... Looks like "bros" aren't allowed to have anything that might hint at the exclusivity of the "men who still have penii and not chicken noodle soup between their legs club."
You just know it was a fat and ugly chick who was complaining about this. Her ex-boyfriend told her "bros before hos" to her before he went to the bar/club.
But there's a sex minigame in every God of War game, how is that not offensive? People make no sense.
"We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created (...)."
They rather should be endlessly committed to not changing their work for hyper-sensitive cry-babies who are neither able to accept humor, nor free expression, nor are able to properly interpret.
The only thing dumber than the folks offended by the name of this trophy are the folks getting offended because they're altering the name of it.
Why are people so immature these days? I mean really, why would you throw a fit over the name of the trophy? It's not that big of a deal seriously...
Changing the trophy tittle is retarded they say ..heh Abso-effin-loutely , devs who decided to alter the tittle should get donkey punch'ed to the forehead
As a chick, I'm don't find that offensive at all. It's just a joke. Why do people get petty about the littlest things? I'll never understand it.
they should had left it alone, people just need to get over it and move on. it is after all a mature game if you can't handle "hos" your not MATURE.
I am 100% for equality among sexes. However, I don't find this offensive; nor would I be offended if it said "Chicks before dicks".
Not all women are hoes. But some of them are. Then again, some guys are hoes too.
I don't understand why this is offensive.
Anyone can get a girlfriend but to have real friends who were there for you when you needed them and you know them for years is worth a lot more than the finest piece of ass.
I just watched some youtube videos for the bros before hos controversy. First off the violent assault in question by itself did not seem inappropriate for the story. A little juvenile - yes , but not so far away from context that it would seem over the top. The trophy afterwards also gave me a little twinge of crassness that spoke more of stupid over the top violence and crudeness reserved for 14 year old Saw-like movie clones that go for gore instead of content. I mean the viloence is not in the same spirit as a Pan's Labyrinth, Sin City, Saving Private Ryan or even Shaun of the Dead where gore is used as a storytelling plot.
I know alot of reviewers like Polygon, Kotaku, Rev3 adam sessler found the violence and adolescent nudity inappropriate at time- I feel this is just more of the same developer added content to produce controversy in order to promote their game. Like the hot coffee, in GTA which you and i know was left in to do just what it did, promote sales to kids and men who act like kids still trying to learn how to cuss right. I have enjoyed 3 god of war games but they wear on you like teen comedies where they just run out of ideas and you grow older and want something with more in a story.
You know a game with over the top violence that was done with perfect pitch and tone- The Mark of Kri series, god how I wish they would reboot that franchise and leave Bros Before Hos games to the kiddy bin.
In a game rated R18+ (where I live), filled with violence, blood and guts, this is the thing they find offensive.
I hate people.
Of all the things to get offended over.....the human race has become a bunch of sniveling oversensitive babies.
I fail to see how it is offensive. I also fail to see the need for these stupid trophies/achievements.
And if you are actually offended by the name of the trophy... well... I can't say anything, lest my words cause damage to your thin skin...
"Bros before Foes"? Why not just remove that achievement altogether? Or make it "Bros before ..."? If I cared about game achievements, I'd prefer no trophy to an awkward one.
Why would they change the name? Who could possibly be offended by the name of a damn trophy?! Jesus, America is imploding.
omg they actualy put that in a game ....
no wonder most players have no girlfriends.... hehe
but its a game I mean mehhh.... they put slave girls and stuff, it should not be taken too seriously
What I really find funny is that Sony Santa Monica Studios' President is a woman and the person in charge of writing the trophy list is a woman too, and she didn't find it offensive.
you know i have pre ordered this and i cannot, i repeat i CANNOT wait to play this kick a** game because Kratos always had a great inspiration in me....
@Zoza24 An aussie friend of mine once told me the proper way to do an american accent is to sound simultaneously violated and entitled.
@Zoza24 Pussified? Last time I checked Australia is the one that bans all the violent video games. Suck it!
