GTAV bigger than RDR, San Andreas, and GTAIV combined - Report

Gameworld supposedly larger than combination of Rockstar's past games; players can switch between three protagonists at "nearly any time."

The news flood for Grand Theft Auto V continues. The digital edition of Game Informer's December issue was released today, and Kotaku reports that it bears numerous news nuggets about the upcoming open-world action game.

The first is a claim that the gameworld of GTAV is larger than Red Dead Redemption, GTA: San Andreas, and GTAIV combined. The game's fictional Los Santos setting reportedly includes wilderness, a military base, and an explorable underwater ocean floor.

Additionally, the game's three protagonists are named Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. Players can switch between them at "nearly any time," the magazine suggests. Further, these characters will sometimes work together, with players able to swap back and forth in a similar way to the Lego series of games.

On top of that, Michael, Trevor, and Franklin each have a distinct personality, skill set, and posse of friends. When players are controlling one of the characters, the other two will leave and do something else on their own.

Similar to Red Dead Redemption, GTAV will have randomized missions and events. These include events surrounding hitchhikers, dead bodies, muggers, and others to be named later. Lastly, the GTAV gameworld will include some sort of an economy, though players will not be able to purchase properties.

Rockstar Games last week confirmed that GTAV will ship for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 during spring 2013. Preorders for the game opened this week at select retailers in the United States and Europe. The game's second trailer will arrive November 14.

Sounds like this will be the size of Just Cause 2, which is awesome!! How in the heck does Rockstar do it? I think they are wizards!

The game sounds amazing.  I do wish you could change character's clothes, and don't know about what they'll do with vehicles, but the 3 protagonist idea is one of the best I've heard about in any video game.

I never understood the dislike of GTA IV because it was a little darker.  I loved that, actually, thought it was the best in the series by an enormous margin.  And honestly, who complained about the driving in GTA IV?  That driving is amazing.  Now they're gonna make it less realistic?  That really bums me out.

@downloadthefile i agree about the driving.  GTA4 really let you play around with the vehicles in a fun way.  car chases are far more fun when the cars handle realistically (by Hollywood standards of course, im not dumb)  but the car stuff just felt awesome in GTA 4.   if you hated it, you were just bad at it.

@ImpliedBunny  @downloadthefile Agreed, but I'm not opposed some tweaking. From the GI article it sounded like they think the GTA5 driving will be on par with racing games. I highly doubt they pull it off...but imagine if a GTA game implemented handling and racing systems robust enough to put Horizon to shame...

not buying properties was a let down for me too, but I realized it wouldnt work out because you will be playing with 3 characters simultaneously. If they wanted to they could, which is why I hope they put it in a dlc or something.

i hope that other players will be able to take control of the other characters and possibly play the separate campaign at the same time as the other players. That way they could meet up with each other in different missions

RDR was pretty damn huge. So if this is gonna be bigger than RDR, San Andreas, AND GTAIV combined...I'm gonna need a GPS. XD

"Players will not be able to purchase properties..."  That's a huge letdown.  Rockstar, I love a great story, and the "rags to better rags," theme adopted by GTAIV was certainly important to Niko's story.  But the core of what most gamers enjoyed about previous installments was that aspect of owning the city, becoming the "King."  I was also hoping for more of what made C.J. special:  character customization.  I loved the tats, the clothes, the hairstyles.  I must say I'm a bit disappointed to hear those things won't be coming back, though I'm sure you're making a solid, enjoyable game.  That being said, I can't wait to play GTAV!

I hope you can just choose one character and kill the other 2 thus returning it to the usual one character story. Those of you who want the 3 characters great keep em those who don't kill em.

make it so Rockstar.

I don't like the idea of multiple characters. Love the massive gameworld, GTA4 got small rather quickly.

The combined amount of that digital space makes me want to crap my pants.

I guarantee the x360 will be multiple disc... so as much as I hate to say it. I am going to go with PS3 on this one.

@gxgxgf Um no, we want a console version that will "just work" because then we don't have to upgrade every peice of it just to play the game.

That being said... PC modding of GTA games... really is just something to behold. I'll never forget the mods I made for GTA3 and Vice City.

@VenkmanPHD Consoles suck, over 5 year old hardware.. stop holding gamers back. GTA IV Ice Enhancer is a cakewalk for PCs.

Kane04
Kane04

@gxgxgf  @VenkmanPHD If it weren't for consoles you might not ever had the PCs you have today. Remember when the original PlayStation came out? What was the industry like?

In a more recent example, the PS2 came out in 2000/1 when MGS2S was released on PC in 2003 PC gamers went berserk because most didn't have a DVD drive yet (and they where available even before 1999)

Historically consoles always come out more powerful then the PC catches up and builds up a bit of a lead before the next one.

I don't see how the 8th generation of consoles going to be any different but I guess it's just trendy and it sounds smart saying consoles are no good compared with a ridiculously expensive PC.

Show me a PC from 2008 for 599 running the latest games.

VenkmanPHD
VenkmanPHD

@gxgxgf You'l get no argument from me that PC games are capable of much better graphics. But I'd have to upgrade the CPU, RAM, and Graphics card just to run GTAV... And this and my X360/Ps3  are both the same age. So... These are all machines that are the same age... and Consoles will play my 60$ game just fine, while my PC would cost... how much to run my 60$ game?I just don't think it's much of a debate. In a few years when I have a better PC, sure I'll buy a PC version for modding... But I just want to play the damn game.

Can I just point out that a GTA world with three protagonists isn't entirely new? Has everybody already forgotten Niko, Johnny, and Luis?

MarcjinJaume
MarcjinJaume

@Patchezs Yeah but imagine you were playing with Niko and then decided to change to Luis and you found him on top of the subway wagon with police choppers chasing him in the middle of a mission. Would you like that? I wouldn't.

VenkmanPHD

@Patchezs Yeah, but Johnny was a total D-bag and Luis was just stupid-lame. Bring back the guy from GTA 3... that would be cool.

VenkmanPHD
VenkmanPHD like.author.displayName 1 Like

@shani_boy101 I don't. As much as I liked San Andreas, and how big it was. I thought the other 2 cities really sucked in comparison.

Kane04
Kane04 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@VenkmanPHD  @shani_boy101 That's just how the cities are in real life, not saying they suck, just saying they have that vibe that apparently you didn't like.

And if it was just Los Santos they wouldn't have showed the van from the bank job with San Andreas on the licence plate.

So fairly confident it will be all 3 again, but because they haven't showed it no one is thinking about it and no one pays attention to the details.

Like the kid in Ground Zeros, Big Boss is much older but people say it's still Chico just because the characters mention it on a trailer.

By the way on that I bet that's David, aka Solid Snake.
