IGN sold

Ziff Davis parent company J2 Global confirms acquisition of IGN Entertainment for undisclosed sum.

The rumors were right. IGN Entertainment has been sold. Ziff Davis parent company J2 Global today confirmed it had acquired the gaming unit (and it network of sites) from News Corp.

Terms of the deal were not specified, though a prior report suggested J2 Global scored a deal on IGN, paying "considerably" less than the $650 million News Corp. purchased the company for in 2005.

News Corp. was reportedly hoping to sell the gaming unit for $100 million.

IGN has been up for auction for the past six months, with past bidders reportedly including Break Media, SAY Media, and unnamed private equity firms.

IGN president Roy Bahat left the company in August.

I think GS and IGN keep up a good level of balanced reviews and content. That's MY opinion of course.

So you buy IGN for 650mil and sell it for 100mil? IGN better have generated more than  that 500mil difference in profit since 2005

What was the value of gamespot in 2005 versus 2013? I know they aren't totally comparable because ign does movies, tv, etc

IGN rate too high. A good game is a 7 not a 9. A 9 is nearly a masterpiece.

i bought  it because i realized once  or twice a year a game did not get a "9".

now that i own it every  single game can have a 9 instead of the 95% that get 9's there now.

I  prefer GameSpot then IGN. But I like to check  IGN everyday because of  Naomi :)

@gowofwarKratos What I like about GameSpot is that everything they publish is actually about video games. On the front page here I can see something else than reviews of every single episode of every shitty american TV-show currently running on television.

@Deity_Dude Bias is based on point of view.  Not everyone has the same point of view or opinion therefore you can pick any news article, review or media in general and someone somewhere will say it's biased.  In this particularly case, you've already shown yourself to be that someone.

as long as they keep Naomi Kyle, they can do whatever they want

@FlameBoyBen It isn't the journalist who is inflammatory, it is the person reading the material who lets it take offence.  You can't publish any written work without someone contradicting you or taking offence.  Look at any news site that allows people to comment on stories.

@-Saigo- @dashawnthl I usually(not always) prefer IGN reviews and editors, but the site and community service is better on Gamespot.

But still,it depends, I always watch both though

I like IGN, they provide things in a totally differant way. I prefer Gamespots pre-release coverage, but IGN does more video reviews. As for the content of the reviews. I enjoy reading both IGN, Gamespot, and Game Informer.

Then of course I write my own when I have time.

Freeforrest

@VenkmanPHD I agree with all of these. I also really like looking at Destructoid, because they have a really informal way of writing articles (which can be really funny) and they feature really cool blogposts on their main newsfeed. Just today I read somebodies comparison to Dark Souls and their grandmother going through Alzheimer's disease. Incredibly sad, incredibly interesting.

I just feel cool checking out all of these different gaming outlets, to try and get a wider scope of opinions. I wish I was this into politics...

IGN has better gaming reviews/articles in general and it was also good because of their Movies & TV. Its nice to have things all in one place.

IGN is kind of what G4TechTV was SUPPOSED to be- Tech, Gaming, Comics, other forms of culture (i tried to work for them years ago when they reviewed musicians and CDs) Gamespot is what G4 was- Focused most on games and gaming hardware.

I like both sites, and i hope IGN does not change.

I don't think that IGN being sold will hurt IGN.

I like both sites. I find IGN gives more information on games in articles, but GS gives more video footage.

I like both sites. Gamespot has by far the better and funnier web shows, but IGN is usually a bit more up to date with news & reviews. Anyway I'm sure whoever bought them will make up the money by having Jessica Chobot posing in various, skimpy costumes !

I actually prefer IGN. Yes the people are more leud with their comments, but they provide more gaming information that's current. That's what's important to me.

I like using Destructoid & IGN for news only, but I like GB, Rev3, GS & RPS for news, game reviews and opinion pieces.

kattamuuran

i wonder if they will actually start to monitor their comments a bit better then. im not saying GS is the best at that either, but the tone and rhetoric seem to be a bit more civilized here than on IGN, which was why i never bothered to create an account over there. but i did check it from time to time to get some alternate perspectives on stories and games and whatnot.

I can see one of two things resulting from this, 1. Remodel IGNs site or 2. Keep as is.

I guess this means that Gamespot "Wins" now that IGN has been sold off. Will they disband the current form of IGN. I did like IGN somewhat.

And with this purchase, they also get back a site they originally created & then sold, 1up.com.  Since IGN bought the company that ZD sold 1up.com a few years ago.
