Apple press invitation to event September 12 in San Francisco teases "It's almost here," with "5" imagery.
The next iPhone may be unveiled next week. GameSpot sister site CNET received an invitation today for an Apple event next Wednesday, September 12, during which it is believed the company will announce the iPhone 5.
The invitation includes the phrase "It's almost here," with a shadowy "5" clearly visible. The event will kick off at 10 a.m. PDT at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater. Apple has used that venue before, most recently to announce the new iPad in March.
If the iPhone 5 is announced next week, it may go on sale shortly thereafter. Verizon is reportedly preventing its employees from taking vacation between September 21 and September 30, suggesting that there will be a significant event, like a major product launch, during that span requiring all hands on deck.
Apple has introduced one new version of the iPhone every year since the product first launched in 2007. The current iteration, the iPhone 4S, launched in October of 2011.

I'm keeping an eye on it only because my Droid Incredible ended up becoming a piece of garbage after the Gingerbread update. So I'm willing to jump sides if the iPhone 5 offers what I want out of a smartphone.
1 Like Why doesn't gamespot report on other types of phones? Last year I don't remember any article on the Samsung Galaxy note or the Samsung Galaxy note 2 that was just announced and the galaxy note is way more revolutionary than any iphone.

@toddx77 If the Galaxy is so revolutionary why is Samsung ordered by the courts to pay US$1 billion to Apple for features in their phone which infringe on Apple patents? I think you've been sold a load of spin.

2 Like Not a gaming-related comment, but it does amuse me that there are people who seem to have built full-time jobs just speculating about what the next iPhone will offer. I wonder what they do in the weeks after the device is released? Do they have withdrawal symptoms?

1 Like The shadowed "5" is probably a deceptive marketing ploy by Apple to make people believe the new iPhone will be called "iPhone 5."
I'm guessing that Apple will "surprise" everyone by announcing 5 new products. The will consist of the new iPhone, new iPods and possibly the announcement for an iPad Mini.
If the 5 things are not devices, then it might refer to 5 features of the new iPhone. Such as LTE, Bigger Screen, new Processor, in-cell technology, and upgraded camera.
It seems wrong for Apple to call the iPad 3 the "new iPad" and then go and call the 6th generation iPhone the "iPhone 5."
@Hvac0120 I also keep wondering why the sixth gen device would be called "5." But who can predict what Apple's naming machine will land on?

There was an iPad 2 then the New iPad and an iPhone 3G then iPhone 3GS then iPhone 4 then iPhone 4S, so why not call the next iPhone the iPhone 5? It seems to be the next in series.
3 Like iphone meh. when i up grade from my windows phone 7 i will either move to windows phone 8 or get an andriod phone because Apple with its locked down iphone sucks.
An iPhone 5? Now already? Wasn't the original released in 2007? Can't really tell whether that's milking or actually improving.
Anyway, It's fine as long as Apple invests a bit more in long-term batteries and cuts the price tag a bit.
couldnt live without my iphone 4 now it really has changed the way i do things from day to day iv had it for 2 yrs and cant even remember what i used to do before it
i can do almost everything i used to do on my pc but now on the move and its only going to get better and faster

i know one thing i do need is more storage space i thought 16gb was more than i would ever need for a phone but it defo fills up quick
@westsiderz28 16 gb is almost nothing ...download one biga$$ game and u get some major space gone at least 32Gb is needed ...as for me i dont like iphones "unlike the ipad " too restricted for my taste and the screen is kinda small plus my s2 has 32gb internal + 32 SD is about all i need although i would like getting the S3 with the chance of having a 128 gb it is not like im gonna use this much storage xD

@Liliroots No it is not, it is considered a phone with multimedia options. It is not a dedicated gaming system, and has no benefits over the dedicated ones. It is completely useless for the average gamer.
@TohouAsura iOS is one of the main reasons mobile gaming handsets (namely Nintedo 3DS and PS Vita) are having troubles getting sales comparable to pre-iPhone. It has had a legendary impact on the mobile gaming industry.
Every new iPhone brings the potential of bigger, better, and more complex games.

@TohouAsura @Hinchief I'm going to "try" to set you straight. If you take a quick look up to the top menu bars for the Gamespot site you will see one allocated to iPhone and one for Andoid. Now really the iPhone one should say iOS as these two categories cover the two main mobile device OS which include massive numbers of mobile games. I'm sorry you don't feel that mobile gaming warrants coverage on a gaming website - but I reckon 95% of people will disagree with your point of view.
@TohouAsura Actually, there used to be a section for mobile phone games. It was around the time that Nokia was trying to sell the nGage, I think. It faded away just like all other older platforms do.

Does it really matter what phone you use? they pretty much all have the same apps. This pissing contest is pointless! What apps do you guys use on a day to day basis anyway? Facebook, Whats app or some other free messaging app, Skype, phone, maps, camera, navigation, voice command? -_- ...... When they new iPhone comes it going to be able to do the same thing as the last! same goes for Samsung and all the other new androids and windows phones. ITS A PHONE ITS USED TO COMMUNICATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@letario Just like game consoles, people have preferences for how their phones work.
iOS has a huge app store and arguably the best games library (mostly because iOS gets the games first).
Android is customizable is more ways than most people should have the power to do. But people enjoy the freedom the system gives them to show their own personality.
Windows Phone has the modern ui that shows bits of information from sources chosen and customized by the handset owner. It also tries to eliminate the need for "apps" for every day options like posting to facebook and/or twitter and messaging contacts.
There's certainly more to each mobile OS than what I have mentioned here, but there is certainly justification for people to prefer one over the others.
2 Like Wow, stop with the hating. If you like iPhone that is cool, if you like Samsung that is fine too. I don't like either, I have a $25 phone because I hate these annual phone releases (and semi-annual releases), I just can't keep up with them. I was actually thinking of getting the iPhone 5, but then I realized it is just a better idea to buy a psVita and stick with my cheap phone.
Here come the Samsung fanboys to hate on apple out of spite and jealousy. Seriously, sammies fanboys are near worse than apple fans.

@deathblow3 @skunkpants The iPhones use more expensive materials. Comparatively with other smartphones, iPhone 4 probably use more metal cost more to produce. Of course 500$ is pretty crazy I agree and just for some more memory.
