Kid Icarus developer no more

Jonathan Toyad
By Jonathan Toyad, Associate Editor

Project Sora studio closed office last month; website to shut down by the end of July.

The development studio behind the 3DS action game Kid Icarus: Uprising has been dissolved.

According to the official statement on the company's website, the side studio of Sora Ltd, created by Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai, closed down on June 30. The company website will remain online until July 31. At this point, there is no official statement from Sakurai and Nintendo as to why the studio was closed down.

In related news, Sakurai and Nintendo announced that Namco Bandai will be developing the upcoming Super Smash Bros. title for the Wii U and 3DS. For more information on Project Sora's game, check out GameSpot's review of Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Lol, GameSpot is such an obviously Anti-Nintendo site.

This post is relatively misleading, studio closing fear mongering.

If Sakurai isn't going to work with the Smash... what will be of Smash Universe???

@jade__chan Sora Ltd is still taking part in super smash bros. Project Sora is done, not Sora Ltd.

Plain and Simple Sakurai made Sora to make Kid Icarus Uprising Specifically.

They didnt lose their jobs, they only closed the subsidiary.

The people of Project Sora is STILL there, and they with Sakurai and Namco Bandai are making Smash Bros.

They just shut down what they specifically opened to make Kid Icarus Uprising, its what Sakurai, ALWAYS does, pick random people to make something and then put them back.

This isn't a well put together story... For starters Project Sora was put together using members of various teams across Sora Ltd. and Nintendo. They were brought together for the sole purpose of creating Kid Icarus Uprising and nothing more. Often Sakurai will pull random members from various teams to work on projects. For example the same group of people that worked on Super Smash Bros. Melee isn't the same team that did Brawl.

No jobs were lost, a studio wasn't lost, all that happened was a team setup for one project reached their goal and they moved on to greener pastures.

Also Namco Bandai isn't developing the next Smash Bros. alone, they are assisting Sora Ltd. with development by pulling various members from multiple Namco Bandai teams (Gundam, Tekken, Ridge Racer, ect.) to work with Sakurai. Sound familiar? This is how the man works so just let him be.

 @kejigoto

Indeed, GameSpot lately has been delivering several misleading articles, and for some reason they all happen to be Nintendo related. The same article was on IGN yet they provided the information that the team is currently working on Super Smash Brothers so at least people don't start thinking that these people were laid off or something.

I don't know what GameSpot's problem has been lately.

I didn't buy up rising since I don't have a 3ds but it is always sad when you know a sequel might not happen.

pizzamuncher

They just made Kid Icarus: Uprising. With Sakurai not interested in a sequel, and the entire team either from Nintendo or Sora Ltd, Nintendo probably saw no reason to keep it open. Most of these employees may very well work on the same game they were going to.

Well, since it was created for the sole purpose of making Uprising, and nobody lost their jobs, there's little reason to get sad. Hopefully they can reform to make a sequel on Wii U though.

@foxfacer2d2 There obviously still could be, but if it is made someday lets hope they don't just add a 2 to the end of the title.

This studio came together to work on the kid icarus game...now that the game is out they simply desolved....nothing more to it. They may get back together if they make a sequel in the future.

I believe that they also worked on Brawl, if I'm not mistaken.

It's a little strange to me that they simply didn't have Project Sora work along side Namco Bandai.

This era of one-shot disposable studios is really disturbing. Studios learn a ton each time they produce a game together.

This 4th SSB (developed by Namco-Bandai Games) will not surpass SSB Brawl (Wii) for NOTHING in the world. "No Sora, no success".

That kind of sucks, the kid icarus game was fun, heck I would throw it back into my 3ds no problem. And I am still not sure how I feel about tekken bros, hopefullly those let go out of this end up in some good places.

They certainly are not bad at what they do.

This is by no way sad news. The guys are probably still working at Nintendo. The project was shut down and the studio dissolved, but the guys who worked there are probably back to their own projects.

It's like SEGA formed the Yakuza team especially to make Yakuza game.

Kid Icarus was a one-shot, and it did okay. I bet it was a great learnnig experience to all who were involved with it.

Keep on, nothing to see here.

I got this game. It looks okay but the controls are god awful. Playing for longer than 10 minutes at a time is a choir.

Project Sora wasn't a huge studio to begin with, I'm guessing most of them were hand-picked by Sakurai given his agency over Nintendo projects. Bet they've all been relocated to wherever Sakurai wants them, he does what he likes and Nintendo will keep handing him the cheques while he still delivers quality.

shovel238

This studio was developed solely for the making of Kid Icarus. Now that the game is finished, the studio closed. Sakurai already said in an interview ( I think with nintendo power) there were no planned sequels. There was a reason it was called project sora (Sky in japanese) and now that the reason no longer existed, this subdivisions no longer exists. I doubt anyone lost their jobs either, since it says "dissolved", they are probably just working on other projects.

@shovel238 He did say there probably wouldn't be another Kid Icarus game for the next 20 years, which is sad, the game was pretty good and sold well.

I am pretty sure no one lost their jobs, they were parts of other studios I believe that came together to make this one game.

Project Sora was a group of people brought together to create Kid Icarus Uprising. Since the has been finished,  the group has been dissolved. There was no finantial reasons, no grudges between the developers or anything like that. It had its purpose, but now they can focus on something else (SSM, for instance).

the author of this story should be ashamed for misleading the readers like this. The subsidiary studio was created specifically for one game only. Sakurai himself said this. The game was finished end of story. No one lost their jobs. Sora ltd. Still remains. Shame on gamespot.
