Square Enix bringing role-playing game to Nintendo 3DS this summer; portable music game spin-off Theatrhythm Final Fantasy drops July 3.
Though Kingdom Hearts 3 is nowhere to be seen, Square Enix today dated new franchise entry Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance for July 31. Previously, the game was expected to ship on an unknown date in 2012.
The game will once again combine a cast of Disney standards like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck with original Square Enix characters. Described as "the opening chapter of the final conflict" for the series' current storyline, Kingdom Hearts 3D follows Sora and Riku through a Mark of Mastery exam required to become Keyblade Masters.
The game shipped in Japan last week and sold 213,579 units in that region.
On top of announcing a release date for Kingdom Hearts 3D, Square Enix also today dated rhythm game spin-off Theatrhythm Final Fantasy for July 3. Gamers in Boston, Massachusetts, this weekend for PAX East 2012 can play the 3DS title at Square Enix's booth on the show floor.

The portable games for this series had a lot to do with the main story. Like what happens before or after Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2. Here's the order in which the story happens for those who are confused:
Birth By Sleep
Kingdom Hearts 1
Chain of Memories
358/2 Days
Kingdom Hearts 2
Dream Drop Distance
And maybe Kingdom Hearts 3.
Not exactly sure where Coded/Re:coded goes. But the secret ending to it
*Spoiler* leads to Dream Drop Distance. You know that because Yen Sid tells Mickey to summon Riku and Sora for the Mark of Mastery Exam. *Spoiler*
i cant wait for this one i already reserve my game already but still why do they have to change their platform always always.. just stick to one console. but i still love the game.
@bogeta24 I was quite surprised about it. Good thing is Europe can't use the "America gets everything before us." excuse anymore. Though it is normally a stupid excuse considering it is normally anywhere between a 2-4 day difference between the releases of America and Europe.
It's been confirmed in dev interviews that there'll be 1 or none side games after this one before they work on kingdom hearts 3, but I understand why they do it because the next game will be gibberish if they don't play the side games, just look at kingdom hearts 2, they made chain of memories to fill in the gap but everybody skipped it and went to #2 straight away, they were all like who the hell is roxas and why does he look like sora... noobs who don't know how to play a series and just go to the major events. also neku ftw! the ultimate emo returns to stun us all with his impressive badge collection :P seriously why does an emo have a badge collection of over 100 and where does he keep them?
@sun_spirit That's a valid statement, but it doesn't explain why square is putting the game on so many different platforms and only on those platforms. Ps2->PSP->DS. I'm pretty sure most of us only have 1 or 2 consoles.
Some people just dont understand how long it takes to make a game with a truly gripping story line. Even if it takes square another 10 years for KH3 at least we will know it has had effort put into it. Developers hold back games to improve them and iron out bugs, not to p*ss you off. KH3D is the next true entry to the series not a spin off about roxas or computer viruses. so just be patient and wait for the reviews people.
I believe it has been stated many times after Versus XIII they will start KH3. A few months ago it was announced Versus XIII went in to full production. You don't have to buy the game or a new system, It's not the end of the world. You can easily watch someone playthrough it or read a synopsis online somewhere. I would rather they spend six years on a game so it can be perfect or at least nearly perfect, when it is rushed 70% of the time it is a short game, has bad mechanics, and normally not too good of a story explanation. In the long run the time they take to start KH3 might pay off for them. I am pretty sure when it is FINALLY announced people will be in an uproar. I just hope they really make it a game worthy of a wait. If you look at it the release between KH1 and two was almost four years, in a few days it will JUST now be six years between the wait of KH2 and KH3. Patience is a virtue. I am pretty sure Versus will subdue people for quite sometime upon It's release anyway. I also wouldn't mind some HD remakes of the original three games and maybe BBS. Or at least release them on the PS Store. @manunas96 This game takes place a little bit after the secret ending of KH2. @Sahle123 Wider audience, like you said, not everyone has all the systems. Wider audience = more fans.. more fans = more money. Besides, as I have said before you do not HAVE to buy them, quite simple to watch someone play it or read what happens. People freak out when they release one off of a PS system. When in reality you can just go and read a synopsis or watch a playthrough if you really do not want to buy a new system. @LeahMyles This is to KH3 as COM was to KH2, except, from what I heard it is much more important and you will be very confused if you do not read the story or play it. I have also heard many times it is the best one yet. (Hope it is, KH has lost some of It's luster over the years.)
It seems like they've been trying to drag out Kingdom Hearts as long as possible. As long as this one happens AFTER KH2 I'm fine with that. It also sounds like this is the last one before KH3! I'm also glad that they're almost there, but that could still be awhile. After all this setting up they've done, I hope KH3 will be mind blowingly awesome! And a KH on a console would be nice and so would an HD collection.
Don't give a f***. I completely gave up on this series after Birth By Sleep. Hell, even if they DO make a Kingdom Hearts 3, i'm not sure I could even be arsed to play it. You've skipped a whole system generation, Square, and released your games on just about every concievable console, EXCEPT the PS3. What. Is. Wrong. With. YOU??
@Downloadpilot People have been asking for a HD Collection for years. So you need to STFU kid. HD Collection with Trophies is a must have. So go right ahead and play ur stupid KH Handhelds.
@BryanParksSuper I'm sorry, but do you think you're speaking for all the fans? I don't want an HD collection of anything -- I want a new game. A sequel! Still, I'm totally pysched about Dream Drop Distance :D
@Darkkend People want a HD Collection you moron. Square Enix will not work on KH 3 until Versus is released if it gets released at all. So STFU already. Fans want KH 3 but were just going to have to wait in the meantime We Fans would like a HD Collection to hold us over.
Finally! Another Kingdom Hearts game! Birth by Sleep looked awesome and so does this, but it sucks I don't own either a PSP or a 3DS. One question to Square Enix..... WHERE IS A FULL SEQUEL?! No announcements.... nothing. It's been almost as long as it's been since the last Sly game with Kingdom Hearts. They're already making a fourth Sly game, why not announce Kingdom Hearts 3?
@kexul9 I think Square-Enix's goal is to make a version of Kingdom Hearts for as many platforms as possible. That way, no matter what platform you game on, you have a chance to experience it. Makes sense, given that only having the series on a single platform would doom it to a smaller audience and putting EVERY KH game on every platform would be a major cost risk.
Dang if Nintendo has been releasing nothing but quality titles, I can say as 3DS owner, I'm certainly getting my fix this year, thats not even including the massive amount of E-shop games!
I have a very bad feeling with the talk of these new consoles coming out that, Kingdom Hearts 3 will be released on the new PlayStation system to make hardware sales for Sony
Think i might just read the story online do not think i can be asked with buying a whole new platform for this game especially as the 3DS has been rated a health hazard for the eyes
Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of the series but the console jumping is annoying, to play all Kingdom Hearts games including this you need PS2, PSP, DS, 3DS, GBA and even a Nokia phone. It would be easier if they stuck to one brand or were not always exclusive.
@dxdevilex0 Erm, actually this is not KH3, the real developer for KH3 already said, after finish with FF Versus 13, they will work for KH3, so yeah this is not 3...
I just might be tempted to buy a 3DS for this. I holding out for the revsion with 2 analog cicle pads instead of that Add on. Kingdom Hearts is tempting.
for those hoping for a kh3 you will not see it, it has been too long between titles, hell haley joel osment is 23 now. if they were going to release kh3 they would have to reboot kh1/2 and with the life of ps3 now days they would not do that until the ps4 comes out
Can't wait! After all these years of overanalyzing every game in the series with my buddies, nice to see it move forward and give us something else to overanalyze! It would also be cool to see an HD collection containing KH1, KH2, and KH:CoM (and maybe BBS). I would do (almost) anything for that to happen!
