ModNation Racers developer United Front Games building new Sackboy racing game for Sony's home console, due later this year.
Little Big Planet Karting is coming to the PlayStation 3 in 2012, Sony announced this morning. Sony has tasked ModNation Racers studio United Front Games to develop the title, with series creator Media Molecule also on board in a supporting role.
In Little Big Planet Karting, players will take part in competitive and cooperative kart racing across a range of modes. On top of straightforward kart races, gamers can participate in objective-based missions, boss battles, and minigames.
Much like in ModNation Racers, in Little Big Planet Karting, players can customize their Sackboy characters, karts, and more. Customization in the game doesn't end there. The title also sports a level editor that allows players to build courses and decide their own racing rules. Gamers can share their creations with users across the world through the PlayStation Network.
Little Big Planet Karting is hardly a surprise. Last month, Sony confirmed the game was in development but did not share further details.
An earlier report suggested Little Big Planet Karting would run in 3D and support a new PlayStation Move racing wheel.
[UPDATE] Sony confirmed to GameSpot this afternoon that Little Big Planet Karting will have both stereoscopic 3D and PlayStation Move support.
In addition to Little Big Planet Karting, United Front Games is at work on the multiplatform action game Sleeping Dogs.
@Jonwh18 So glad to see someone else has the right idea! So it's a karting game... It's introducing so much more innovation that Mario Kart has done recently. Loyalty is great, but to be blindsighted by it is kind of naive, and frankly it looks like a really great game. Hope it does well!
LOL @ all the people who call any kart racer ever a Mario kart rip-off just because Mario Kart was at the top of a genre for so long people think anything that is a kart racer is stealing from Mario kart. It's like saying that any fps game is COD or HALO rip-off.
Well actually.... That looks great fun!! If it's a kart game with the sheer customise-ableness (that is a word believe me) as Little Big Planet than it will be quality. It looks ace, certainly keep my eyes fixed :)
Hopefully this will have better AI and controls than ModNation Racers. MNR was good but it's not perfect.
This does seem like it could have been a Modnation mod or add-on. I wonder if there will be any Vita or PSP support...
I guess Sony are still looking to find a character they can milk as much as mario... I do miss crash bandicoot. But on the other hand... This is basically just gonna be mod nation with sackboy... I'm totally not seeing the need for it.
Sony was also toying around with the idea of making a fighting game with some (if not all) of Sony games characters (like the Smash Bros.). Here is the Kotaku rumours: http://kotaku.com/5862881/so-just-who-could-be-in-a-sony-fighting-game http://kotaku.com/5862755/is-sony-working-on-its-own-smash-bros-game I have not heard anything since the rumours were out so I would not know more that what they said in those two articles. In the end, I am not surprised by this title, because karting games like this have being around for a long time since I can remember (whether it's a clone of Mario Kart or not), with or without exclusive characters... so I would not lose any sleep over this new game. Quality games are always welcome, instead of just straight clones. Hopefully this game sticks with quality and fun.
there was very little character development in little big planet, That's why i think this game is gonna be purely made for online.
Seriously, Sony you made this game already. It was called Modnation Racers which, in itself was a Mario Kart clone anyway. Even Nintendo knows better than to release more than one Mario Kart game per console life. But from the comments all the Sony fanboys will eat it up and claim that it's so much better than Mario Kart.
yo... this looks fun!, i love kart racing, great to play with friends, especially when your a little buzzed ;)
I hope this game is like crash team racing.... on the ps1. THE FUN i had with that game with all my cousins. OH MAN what a fun game.
Sweet!... Modnation 2... BUT, It does look like its got more modes, very similar to the ones in Mario Cart that EVERYONE liked!
@deadruler08 : Even more inferior how you take the time out to comment on an article for a system you supposedly care nothing about....
@deadrulerO8 Oh look everyone another Xbox fan boy looking to spread his words of wisdom since were all to stupid to realize what a terrible system we all have thank you thank you so much douchebag Seriously if you hate the PS3 so much quit reading articles and commenting on them ....
smart sony--mod nation didnt do as good as you wanted , so you slapped lbp on the title. not gonna make much difference the driving/racing wasnt 1)up to par with mario kart and 2)felt inconsistent
Has it been confirmed yet if the game will be stand-alone or will it be an expansion for LBP 2 that adds a kart racing mechanic and pre-made "levels" (tracks)?
Creating characters in LBP and MNR was hard. MNR had limited props that could only be used on the head, but you could use plenty of stickers without having them remove older ones from the characters. LBP had plenty of parts, and you can use many decorations on a character in many spots. I'm hoping stuff from other LBP games carry over, they blend the better elements of character and vehicle creation together, it's not digital download only, and they don't use an online pass for the game. If all four of those conditions are met, I'll try to buy it on day one.
the only thing LBP has going for it is the level creating feature. However, 2d platforming=Mario. Kart racing=Mario. this is just sad. when is playstation going to have a Smash Brothers?
The inferior console gets another inferior exclusive. Hopefully the framerate will hold up on this one?? Maybe it'll even sell more than 10k units!
Doesn't seem much different to MNR, but then again I've really enjoyed all the MNR games to date so I don't see why I wouldn't give this a try also. Seems a bit pointless to not release it on Vita as well though.
I'm really tired of a$$holes who are saying this will be the same like ModNation. If you don't like it then just shut up and don't buy the game, very simple :) Myself I'm not into racing games at all but it seems very interesting for me
Ok for anyone saying it's the same as Modnation Racers, lets just review the trailer. Very different feel to MNR with different handling. Grappling hook looks important to gameplay. Creation tools very different and more along the lines of LBP to MNR. Much more creation flexibility. You can create top down view tracks as well as side on view tracks in addition to the usual 3D kart racing. You can pick up any object in the game world and throw it. You can create your own game modes. There's a battle mode. Looks like there are actually boss fights. That's just what was shown in the trailer. There's much more new stuff we don't even know about. It's very different to MNR. Try actually watching the trailer before saying it's the same thing. Very different gameplay, very different style, very different creation stuff. Oh and it looks great.
