Lollipop Chainsaw ships 700,000 copies

Grasshopper Manufacture's action game records highest shipment tally ever for company; Killer Is Dead trailer shows katana-wielding cyborg.

Lollipop Chainsaw has shipped more than 700,000 copies since launch in June, making it Grasshopper Manufacture's most-shipped game in its history, Andriasang reports. The news comes from the Lollipop Chainsaw Summer Appreciation Festival event, held this weekend at the Kadokawa Games office in Japan.

The news comes about a year after Grasshopper Manufacture's Shadows of the Damned hit shelves, selling only 24,000 units during its launch month. That game was published by Electronic Arts and won warm reviews.

Also during the event, Grasshopper Manufacture CEO Suda 51 shared a promotional video for the company's mysterious new project, Killer Is Dead. The game will reportedly focus on a katana-wielding cyborg man and make use of a different art style from Lollipop Chainsaw or Shadows of the Damned. Killed Is Dead is due out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2013.

I wonder how many people bought the game just to peek under the skirt of the girl... :-P

@vincent_tai I didn't get it just for that, but was pleasantly surprised when the Achievement popped for it!  d(^ u ^ )b

Grasshopper's most underrated game has to be Contact. The ending was as good as Mother 3 in the "Let's make the player feel strange emotions" category.

Too bad Shadows was severely short changed in the reviews.

I bet the units sold is nowhere near as impressive. Not sure why publishers/developers make a big deal about shipping numbers.

imagine how pissed off people would be if that was a womans head handing off a dudes butt.  yeah think about that backlash the next time someoine calls this game offensive.

ps  this is not in relation to review or the shipping numbers its just a random comment

A shipping number isn't nearly as impressive as a sales number.

It's kind of shocking as it felt like kind of a lazy effort in that it's kind of a cut down No More Heroes. Simpler combat, less challenge, fewer bosses, less variety. I mean I enjoyed it for all of the three play sessions it took to finish but it's definitely Suda 51's weakest game.

So there's the lesson. Pour your soul into doing something different and make a great game that sells 24,000 copies. Phone in a game with gameplay that's an inferior rehash of one of your previous games, put zombies, chainsaws in it and have cheerleader school girl on the cover, sell 700,000.

I guess chainsaw games are like chainsaw movies: they meet unexpected success...

The only thing pathetic about this is all this commenters feeling so butt-hurt because the game they hate happen to be successful.  The game is a entertaining tribute to the old arcades, does a good job into that so: sorry for you if you are not old enough to get the jokes, deal with it.

Glad that, although noisy, they are still a minority of the gaming comunity...

@Warlord_Irochi You should put the word successful into brackets....it sold thousands but not millions as games like Battlefield 3. Second the game is mindless trash, it is like watching some trashy show from MTV...It is full with stereotypes and idiotic behavior plus it was a short single player experience with a bad price tag

Warlord_Irochi

@Simplythebest12 It's a success because we are talking about a low-to-medium budget game made by a small studio, not a AAA.  You Can't compare it with a high budget one (one and a half million would mean absolute failure for BF3, for example). And yes; it is mindless and it's an absolute cliché; touching stereotypes about goths, punki rockers, hippies, metalheads, blonde airheaded cheerleaders, B-series zombie flicks, and It's intended to be that way, like every game from Suda 51 after "Killer 7".Also, as most of games in the 80's early 90's it's focused in replayability a lot more than in single-playthrough experience. You see as flaw exactly what the game wanted to show; a branded 90's arcade experience.  It's ok if you don't like it, of course, but when we talk about Suda-51 we are talking about a genius in the industry; if you know him, each time he does something stupid you should know it's intentional.Have a nice day.

Like most Suda 51 games, LC was an aquired taste that paid homage to a particular set of influences. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and am glad of it's success, but have no qualms in saying that Shadows of The Damned was a much finer product across the board, and out of all of his current gen offerings, I think it's definitley the one that a lot of people missed out on.

@omghaxor45 +1 man idk this game was all over the place the best game Grashopper made was no more heroes. other then that i did enjoy Fatal Frame 4 and shadows of the damned.

I'm happy that Grashopper has finally found success. It does show how great of a publisher WB really is :) The only sad news is that EA isn't that great of a publisher, and they pushed Shadows of the Damned out without so much as an ad--or stock at GameStop. This is certainly a fun and creative game, though it's Suda's weakest to date. I wish Shadows got these sale instead, but here's hoping that his next game will be amazing and sell well :D

Good for Grasshopper and Lollipop. New IPs have a tough time in the market.

@Razer361 Agreed, Grasshopper cant make good games by the normal way, then they hit the weak spot of many people: SEX. that is the cause why they made it.

Again, in a huge surprise, people complain about good news. This is a failing industry where new IPs are demanded by gamers and then they don't buy them. They complain this is "shipped" numbers, well it's kind of impossible to tell how many are sold without guessing. Just be glad that people are supporting our industry, and not just saying the game is terrible.

@immortality20 i rented it too, and finished it in well over 4 hours. It was fun, but by no means a full game. it feels more like a downloable game like journey and whatnot. Still looking forward to the killer is dead btw!

Goichi Suda's most recent games seem to be struggling to live up to the genius that was Killer 7. Mind you, that is just my opinion.
