Mario Kart 7 update kills shortcut exploits

Nintendo dispatches update for 3DS racing title that removes unintended shortcuts on three courses; players must download update to play online.

Nintendo Europe today announced that it launched an update for Mario Kart 7 that kills off several shortcut exploits for the 3DS racing game. The update removes shortcuts Nintendo deems unfair on the Wuhu Island Loop, Wuhu Mountain Loop, and GBA Bowser Castle 1 courses.

Gamers who elect not to install the update will remain able to take part in Mario Kart 7's single-player and multiplayer modes, but will not be able to play online. As of press time, Nintendo of America had not responded to GameSpot's inquiry regarding when the update will launch in North America.

Mario Kart 7 launched for the 3DS in December 2011, scored a strong critical reception, and sold 4.54 million copies. For more, check out GameSpot's review of Mario Kart 7.

Nintendo are definately backward with alot of online capabilities, the video channel on 3DS is laughable with only 4 videos avaliable at any one time, demos have only just arrived for crying out loud and they are play limited...that went out in 2000!

i remember when they had that contest for mario circuit on the n64 (to win a gold controller), everyone used the shortcutt (although it wasnt easy to successfully hit the right jump three times in a row) ,  but sadly they randomly drew names for the controller.  I was p.o.ed

@wowwow27 Yeah I remember that contest. My dad actually managed to get a low enough time without using a shortcut, but we also didn't win.

Nintendo embracing patches for their games? Excellent. They might just start to embrace this newfangled internets thing!

There still is one major unintended one in rainbow road, however this is probably going to be very hard to patch.

Finally, those "shortcuts" made the game impossible to play online. Everyone would vote for those levels just so they could easily beat everyone who didnt know how to do it or didnt want to.

im glad to see nintendo take a step forward and patch a glitch in a game. this will only make them more popular with there fan base. I have recently come across the 3ds and I have to say that it is a great handheld, itz wat i thought the original psp should have been like

SIGH, still haven't played this game because of money issues, but I'm sure I'll get to it eventually (check my avatar, i'm a fan) and when I do it's nice to know that everything will be above board :)

If I may quote WWE's Daniel Bryan: "YES! YES! YES!"

Now we have no more cheaters.

I played Mario Kart DS online years back and there were so many hackers who would overlap everyone a half a dozen times before the race ended with speed hacks. Has Nintendo gotten better at controlling the integrity of their online experiences? Based on this article I'm thinking yes, if it's true that shortcut exploits are the worst of the problems facing Mario Kart 7 online.

@Tauu Nintendo certainly has been doing a good job taking down hackers and glitches. It's a good sign that I haven't seen an Action Replay for the 3DS yet. Hopefully there never will be.

Nintendo is probably trying, but it seems odd that they are just catching on even though we've had the Wii out for so many years now. In some ways, Nintendo seems way behind in Patches/Updates, DLC, and just online content in general.

I'm glad to see Nintendo do this.  Between this and the update channel that fixed the bug in Skyward Sword, I'm getting some hope that Nintendo finally gets using online updates to patch things.

Now, this makes me hopeful that SSB4 avoids the issues that plauged Brawl when it comes to character imbalance.   Nintendo can hopefully patch that game to buff or nerf characters and remove cheap tatcis that shut down certain characters(King Dedede's infinite on Donkey Kong for example).

I hope Nintendo contintues to embrace this stance of using patches to fix games post-release.   Even more then Mario Kart, I would say Smash Bros would benefit nicely from post-release patches that change characters and the overall balance of the game.

Hopefully, this will stop another character like Meta Knight from dominating the metagame while a character like Ganondorf sits at the bottom with no hope of rising.

So...now even the 3DS is joining the updates scheme. This feels bad. Like with PS3 and 360, even Nintendo is getting in on the "we control the game AFTER you've purchased it" scheme.

I think the 3DS is gonna slide to a lower position on my list of future purchases. My DS Lite (GBA compatibility, woohoo!) is gonna keep rocking for a very looooong time.

@nate1222 I don't see anything wrong with it , they fixed a glitch that was ruining the game for some players. That isn't controlling the game.

Good to hear, its a shame that people cant police themselves and simply not ruin the game for everyone by cheating.
