I really don't think that taking Shepard out of the story is a good idea because in mass effect 3 you leave work undone. For example in one of the ending in mass effect 3 either if you romance, Ashley, Miranda, tali or Liara they wanted you to come back from the citadel. In my endings I romanced Miranda and before I leave she tells me " when your done come back and find" something like that she said, but little right there gets the player that romanced her inpatient for mass effect 4 they want to come back and romance her. Plus in alot of ending when you decide to destroy the reaper alot of people had the cut scene were Shepard takes a breath and the game ends there but also that one cut scene too tells the player that he's still alive. Mass effect 1 and mass effect 2 where awesome games with Shepard and in mass effect 3 they perfected that but they can't just bring Shepards story to an end in mass effect 3 there so Mach to be done with him. I've had alot of conversations with people to see what they wanted to happen for mass effect 4, they said that it doesn't bother tem if bioware brings new teammates to te game what just bothers them is that bioware is taking Shepard out they also said they wanted a happy ending in mass effect 4 with shepard no matter who they romance and no matter what kind of new enemy a merges in mass effect 4 they want a happy ending also romanced no matter if it is ashley, Miranda, tali or liara Please guys help me and most importantly help your Shepard out to be in the next mass effect I don't want shepard out and I bet you don't too, so come on people rise against that decision that bioware is making change there minds so that they keep Shepard. I speak for every one out there and they want shepard in with all the characters from mass effect 3 and ME2 If you soppurt this comment thank you so much your not the only one supporting this other people are thank you. :)
BioWare says it has plans for more stories in its sci-fi franchise, but won't be returning to the commander of the Normandy for future games.
In BioWare's Mass Effect universe, Commander Shepard has enjoyed a distinguished career, but if it continues beyond next year's Mass Effect 3, gamers won't be seeing it. The developer confirmed for PC Gamer earlier this month that it won't be returning to the protagonist of the Mass Effect trilogy after the third game's release.
"After this, Commander Shepard's story is complete," producer Michael Gamble told the site. When asked if that meant Shepard definitely won't be in future Mass Effect games, Gamble responded, "Correct."
That doesn't mean the Mass Effect universe is in danger of going away. BioWare CEO Dr. Ray Muzyka told PC Gamer that the studio has "ambitious plans to continue this franchise," and is looking at Mass Effect 3 as an opportunity to make an entry point for newcomers to the series.
Set for release on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on March 6, Mass Effect 3 sees planet Earth under siege. The attackers are the Reapers, a race of heavily armed sentient spacecraft that were central to the plot of the first Mass Effect. The return of the Reapers to the series was concretely revealed in Arrival, the last installment of downloadable content for Mass Effect 2.
In Mass Effect 3, players will once again take on the role of Shepard, who is now on the run from the shadowy pro-human organization Cerberus. To save Earth, Shepard must travel the galaxy trying to rally support from alien civilizations with varying degrees of sympathy.

i feel it will be kinda hard to top shepard after the 3rd game wraps up, the same can be said for a few of his teammates (garrus, grunt, wrex, mordin, hell even liara and tali... you know what.. it'll be a hard cast to replace... lets leave it there). for those of us who will be able to enjoy mass effect from its first to its very last DLC, there will always be that itch to compare the next band of space musketeers with the original... not everyone can pull a godfather 2 but there is faith in me that bioware has the potential to do that
@PrplMnkyDshwsr7 I definitely agree, even in ME2 Shepard could have died. I bet if that doesn't happen then something that departs from the usual cliches of the series. But as long as ME4 has Garrus, I'll be a happy nerd.
HA HA They kidding us. BioWare don`t waste Mass Effect nice gameplaye engine . We can see Mass Effect 4,5,6,... like Assassin`s creed Series.Mass Effect have a perfect engine like Call of duty in first person shooting or like TOTAL WAR in strategical platforms . We love mass effect series you love mass effect series so don't worry about storyline they surprise us when Shepperd killed in Normandy and rise again in Cerberus clinic . lol
well, unlike others, I think it would be cool to have Shepard die in the end. Too often do games and movies try to save the character, and it usually leads to them being the last survivor or something cliche like that. Granted, I'm not hoping for my character to die at the end, but if he/she does die then I'd have no problem as long as it's handled properly. It'll be interesting to see how they continue the universe after this. Plus, it'll make it easier for ps3 users to really get into it from the beginning of a new "series" rather than jumping right into Shepard's story. I just hope the gameplay is solid in this game, as it looks to be more streamlined than ME2. Of course that's judging just from 10 or so minutes of gameplay that's been shown, so I'm assuming it'll be just as good as the 2nd game.
I don't see any difference between this and them just releasing a statement that says "Mass Effect 3 ends with Shepard dying." Unless of course it's reverse psychology, and Shepards journey ends in some way that's so awe-inspiringly amazing way we can't even comprehend it yet! Actually no, he's just gonna die, which sucks... BOOOO!!!!
Bioware stated there will be multiple endings, I'm sure in some of them Shep will make the ultimate sacrifice, in others Shep may live.
i just don't want bioware to make Sheperd DIE !! and expect a emotion ending !!... it would just plain suck :( ... sheperd should live and become a hero !! :D
Ahhh.... the good times. Eden Prime, Virmire, making Saren kill himself, and of course the demise of Sovereign. Being shot out of space, being reconstructed, stopping the Collectors... and all as a Paragon. Waited until now to start my Renegade playthrough so I would finish just before ME 3. I can't wait to see the climax of this trilogy and what the future holds for the franchise. But I'm thinking that in order to save everyone, Shepard will have to make a Fallout 3-style decision. I hope he lives, but something tells me that he's gonna give his life for the greater good. At least he knows what to expect in death =P
I think every time they say "this is a good entry point for newcomers" a non-newcomer cringes. That's like the new buzz phrase in marketing for BioWare or something. They say that on every sequel. It's like they're implying "beware, old fans, you won't be recognizing your favorite game"... buut that could be a good thing as much as it could be a bad thing.
Hopefully future Mass Effect games will be up to par with the current. I'm kind of glad in a way that they're not going to drag on the story with Shepard and change it around a bit but then hope they don't ruin the over all game with it. Good luck I'm looking forward to give it a go!
Spoilers: Shepard merges with Helios and rules the world as a benevolent dictator with infinite knowledge and reason.
I'm thinking a Mass Effect MMO is coming up next. Maybe they will go back to the beginning and make it so one could be an Asari, or Salarian or Geth even. That's my thought.
No suprise since they did say this was the end of the Trilogy not necissarly the end of the series. Hope both Renegade and Paragons get good finales though. I'm hopefull for a prequal game of Revelation.
well they can't kill him off last time they just bought him bacck from the dead the only option will be stasis lol
that's an understandable decision. but i do want to see Shepard again as a NPC in the sequel. maybe shepard become a member of the council and we can work for him/her.that'll be awesome
I wish Drew Karpyshyn stayed on for ME2 and ME3 instead of going to work on TOR. The series died with that move and turned into nothing but a mediocre shooter. That's my opinion of course but it kind of sucks, I was looking forward to actually ending this series happy.
Not really surprised about it, it's well known for long that ME3 wil be the last part of the ME Story. It's a good sign that companies are finally slowly going away from continuing every successive game series till death out of boredom ( a certain Lara comes to mind...) And also hope that Shepard can retire alive and in dignity, for a true Paragon Ending =D
However they continue the series, I hope to see/read that Shepard is alive and well, somewhere in the galaxy. Maybe a "Elvis" style sighting or two.
I just hope that they dont kill shepard off like most rpg killing off protagonist . I mean all that effort just to see him die.
@bandarman How much support does he need? Hmmm. One man brought back from death with the best weapons the collected weaponiers of the galaxy can make..... versus Skynet + Matrix + Borg + spaceships all in ONE GIANT SENTIENT INTERSTELLER ROBORGANIC ARMADA! At the very least, Shepard needs a mascot or a hype-man or something. (and no, Joker doesn't count as a mascot or a hype-man. He saved the ship, dammit!)
Yeah, the Mass Effect universe is too good to just end, but I wouldn't mind playing a different character.
"looking at Mass Effect 3 as an opportunity to make an entry point for newcomers to the series" Why does this quote scare me?
Shepherd is still rallying support? Wasn't that the plot of ME2? How much support does he need? You only need an overachieved (all skills maxed) Shepherd with a big weapon to take down the Reapers... I'll be BACK! :P
ya im sure he will have to sacrifice himself somehow to save the world usually how it goes one on one with reaper head
This is by far my most Favorite of all video game serie's I can't wait to see where they go after shepard's part is done!
I am not a mass effect fan, but after this trailer, I think the holiday is going to be a "MASS EFFECT".
@TigusVidiks Bioware created a whole new universe from scratch. created new alien species, political stand points, history of the universe. they cant just tell one story and be done with it. theres so much more to be explored. shepherds has one story arc. maybe the next game wont be and rpg it will be a first person shooter, an RTS or a heavy rain styled game. movies, comics, novels
I hope the commander gets the send off he deserves. I am sure Bioware won't disappoint. After that can't wait for someone to make a video of Commander Shepard's highlight reel :D
So, we'll have a new protagonist in future games in the series. Don't really care, as long as the Mass Effect Universe, with all its lore, stays as it is.
I'd like to see the end of this trilogy like this: Shepard becomes the new illusive man, except one that has a better knowledge of what is going on in the Mass Effect Universe and he would be the new leader of a better Cerebus, (sp), and let some other character save other worlds with Shepard in the background as the controller!!!
