This game takes place after Peace walker, leading up to the events of Metal gear 1 and 2. After playing as Big Boss(naked SNAKE) in MGS5, we will hopefully be treated to a game titled 'METAL GEAR' where we play as Solid Snake on his first mission.

Hideo Kojima has reportedly announced that the fifth entry in the series will use in-house Fox Engine and conversation trees; date and platforms remain unspecified.
Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has reportedly confirmed that there will be a fifth entry in the main franchise.
According to an interview conducted with IG Magazine (via Gamekyo.com and The Escapist), Metal Gear Solid 5 will be running on the Fox Engine, an in-house engine created by Kojima Productions.
Kojima reportedly said that the title will contain more infiltration and possible conversation trees, to further the game's narrative.
"I loved the idea of the social interactions in Deus Ex: Human Revolution that we've seen," Kojima was quoted as saying. "And, if I say more about it, the ninja PR woman behind the door will chop me into pieces."
The sequel will not have direct ties with the upcoming Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Kojima also confirmed that Metal Gear's main character, Solid Snake, will be around for the fifth game.
No other details on the game have surfaced, including release date and platforms, and no word on whether an official announcement or teaser will be made and presented at this year's Tokyo Game Show in September.

2 Like "Be around for"...could mean anything. My guess is if it takes place after four he'll be a supporting character, or the game might be a prequel focusing on a younger Snake.
Gosh, I really want a remake of 1 and 2 with an updated narrative. 1's a simple enough game for it to be a Tanker-Chapter style prelude to "Solid Snake", it'd be nice to see the MSX story through the storytelling vision of the modern era.

Wow it took them this long to realize how social interactions can be implemented into a game? lol. And DE:HR opened thier eyes? Deus Ex started it in 2000', and it took 12 yrs to figure how much social interaction adds depth into a game?
I have alot of respect for Hideo Kojima, but that statement worries me, as it's something i expected out of a much lesser developer.

Kojima san, I applaud you and your team for diving head first into the espionage genre. if first with the "hammer" or action aspect of the two, now with the "scalpel, or fiddle" of the dynamic. The genre will be complete with an aspect of the shadow war we can now interact and be even deeper enthralled by!!!!!

4 Like @elusivewater when every game you make is suppose to be the last, you put much more effort to make everything as best as possible. Unlike the idea of, we can do that in the next game. It's not a bad concept so far that Kojima has been using, its worked wonders so far.
2 Like You know normally I would be upset and burnt out when I heard about another sequel coming out these days.. Metal Gear Solid is the only series that never disappoints, that I'll never get tired of as long as Hideo Kojima is doing the games.

I said before the next MGS game to be based after 4 may have Sunny or a new character as the new main... forgot to mention Raidens son is a good option as well.
@Slipknotdayof9 MGS4 is the end, so MGS5 willl take place before MGS and MG and will take place after MGS3.
I hope its a ps3 exclusive too. I have both 360 an ps3, and i dont see how it could work on the xbox without some kind of super massive install. I dont want it to be watered down due to limitations of the hardware
Just because its MGS5 doesnt necessarily mean that it will be in chronological order. Perhaps it will be a re done version of the snes metal gear games.

convo trees -_- well as long as the gameplay is good i'm up for it, altough i like to control a more fluid char now then stiff old grandpa snake.
@Padaman you should watch the ending on Youtube. I hope you know some of the backstory of the MGS saga, otherwise it won't make much sense.
@Padaman snake doesn't kill himself and finds big boss as an old guy standing next to him with zero sleeping in a wheelchair (the vegetable was just a clone of big boss). then they talk for a long time about the patriots and whatnot. then big boss kills zero, and after he feels sick and dies there as well. snake moves on and finds out he won't be a biological weapon. then he quits smoking. otacon tells him that he has a few more months left just to enjoy life.

1 Like will be interesting to see how Solid Snake will fit into this game. personally I can't see him being the main character for the whole game, although at the same time this creates a void which we don't know who will fill.

I have a feeling 5 will be a re- telling of MGS3. Snake is pretty much the new Boss by which he's constantly messing up Patriot's plans and such. The finally get how to make a super soldier correctly (no aging defects in DNA) and guess what... They send him (or her!) to kill Solid. Snake kicks new recruits ass and then convinces him to switch sides. Done. You could spawn a whole new series from that.
Or, (and this is what I was expecting to see in 4 but didn't happen) Sunny goes all jailbait Natalie Portman a la "The Professional" and gets Snake to train her in the ways of badassery to avenge her mom.
