Microsoft confirms new Xbox

While discussing new Outlook email service, Microsoft general manager Brian Hall namedrops "new Xbox" but does not share more.
After significant speculation spread over the span of years, Microsoft has finally spoken on-record about its next Xbox. During an interview with The Verge focused on Microsoft's new Outlook email service (embedded below), general manager Brian Hall name-dropped a "new Xbox."
“We’ve had Hotmail and operated Hotmail for about 16 years, we obviously have Exchange, and Outlook, that people use at work. We just decided it was time to do something new and bring the best from each of those and put them together and release it right in time for the new wave of products that we could have coming out with Windows 8, with the new version of Office with the new Windows phone and the new Xbox,” Hall said.
Hall did not share further details on the next Xbox. Windows 8 will launch on October 26 alongside Microsoft's new Surface tablet line.
[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Microsoft issued a statement to GameSpot on the matter.
“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships," reads a line from the statement. "We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.”
The analyst consensus is that the next Xbox, as well as the PlayStation 4, will be on store shelves for holiday 2013. A recent 56-page document supposedly originating from Microsoft said the next Xbox would launch in 2013 at $299 bundled with the second iteration of Kinect, among other updates. As for the PS4, PlayStation executive Andrew House said in June that Sony's new console would not be shown until a "significant leap" over the PlayStation 3 could be demonstrated.

1 Like Look folks it is time. Time for new consoles, time for new IPs, time for the console life cycle to advance.
There will still be plenty of content on the old systems, both digital and retail. But at least there will be the next generation of consoles coming to life. All the possibilities, all the chance for failure, chance for profit, chance for success, it will at least be there.
All the arguments for and against a new system have been said before,: both in the history of consoles and the change of anything throughout history.
For some people we would still be driving Model T cars, using windows 95, watching three networks, and still be under British rule here in the USA.
Me and most others are ready for the new, (I may not be able to afford a new console day one) but just reading and seeing the buzz, the excitement, and watching developers take wild risks on new IPs will be just as enjoyable. Yes we may get some Dreamcasts (burn bright hot then fizzle), Wii's (great then sour over time) but we also may get a PS one or a super nintendo or xbox 360.
I do not care who wins or loses as long as I get to be part of the fight. And I will double down on the games, GAMES, GAMES, GAMES!! Yes awesome games still do come in the late cycle of consoles lives- but really, you know its the next generation that spawns winners and failures. Either way the gamer wins.
3 Like I don't need new consoles, rather new IP, new gaming experiences. As of today, xbox and ps3 are still doing a great job with awesome grade-A titles. There's yet too much that can be done before launching a new next-gen.
1 Like I agree with wescraven. I'm not ready for new consoles either. I'd prefer to wait. If new stuff came out in late 2014 or even in 2015, I'd be happy rather than sad.
2 Like I am not ready for a new console just yet. Hope they take their time and work out the bugs instead of rushing it out to beat sony to the market. Do it right this time please. I am still trying to catch up on games from last generation. Personally I could wait another year or two before we come out with new stuff.

I would hope that this new one would really have some remarkable games, and by that I mean something that would at least make me consider buying it.
6 Like I play games a lot less than I used to, not enough to warrent a day one purchase of any console (which is a universal no-no anyway), but if kinect is mandatory with a lot of games then playstations going to be my first console next gen.

my 360 has lasted nearly 4 years but i might need to buy a new one soon. hopefully this rumour isn't entirely true, because there is no way i'm buying the next xbox so soon after buying a second 360. unless my current one isn't breaking down then go ahead and release it if you wish.

More than likely a more powerful console but yet they will continue to push Kinect, services and XBLA titles that use hardly any power. What is the point of making a more powerful console if you aren't going to use it. Doesn't make any sense.

2 Like If this is true then i want GTA 5 for the 720. let them wait a couple more months make bretter graphics or something, or fix the little bugs. It would really suck if GTA come's out a couple of months before the 720 and we will have to wait 3-4 years for a new one.....
@y3ivan They haven't confirmed any platforms yet, as far as I'm aware. Everyone's assuming it'll be on 360 and PS3 but that might change.

@DaClatso I'm pretty sure it will come with a controller. The Kinect 2 games should be a step above what is on the original Kinect, since it will be updated hardware.

2 Like There's no detailed info about the new Xbox itself, but a leaked info and photos of its development kit appeared. @AtariOno Yep! I also agree with @AtariOno. Every leak should be analyzed carefully. Nevertheless, 6x-power update seems reasonable to me and, personally, I'm tired of PC/console competition. I just want one single processor at home. It would be great to install some kind of Linux on that new Xbox and use it for everything and for free ;)

The only difference between x360 and x-inf is its A-CPU on top of the traditional P-CPU. X360 has already had 2 GPUs.
1 Like This doesn't sound like any sort of confirmation to me. It's possible that he's talking about the next Xbox console, but he could easily be talking about some sort of update or service for the Xbox 360, such as a new dashboard update. Remember, the redesigned one they gave us in 2008 was called the "New Xbox Experience".
Could also be talking about something like a new 360 hardware SKU, such as the $99 subscription bs, or the Windows 8 Xbox Live service, which might let us play 360 games on PC or something
@Spartan_418 dont think win8 allows a vanilla 360 game to run on a random spec PC. Even if it did get it to work, it will have tons of problems, from graphical artifacts to framerate issues without any official support from the developers
@y3ivan Of course not on a random spec PC, no. I could envision something like a set of minimum hardware requirements which allow 360 games to run, though. A machine that had those could have an official "Certified for Xbox 360" sticker on it.
Given that the 360 hardware is 7 years old, including equivalent or compatible hardware in a gaming PC wouldn't be prohibitively expensive.
@Spartan_418 Its still not possible for a direct port for x360 even with XNA certified and a Dx API. I m talking about emulators like those released for PS2. Even Dark souls had a hard time porting to PC due to developers putting very little effort in porting. You got to know that data handling for consoles and PC is very different. Even x360 has 2 GPUs (different frequency) and most of the developers will just abandon the coding for the A-GPU and replace it with regular Dx API for filter effects and Antilising.
However, i might be guessing that Win8 will have a digital marketplace (GFWL) where developers will able to publish console ports. Ya, not exactly what ppl wanted either.
In my opinion, Microsoft should focus on finding good developers on developing new IPs for hardcore video gamers on the Xbox 360 than creating the next Xbox. The Xbox 360 still has enough lifecycle to keep going. It would be even great if they got Rare to develop Killer Instinct 3 instead of those stupid Kinect video games on the Xbox 360.
Explain to me how this qualifies as a confirmation. Damn, talk about the "fail" of the basic education system in the area of proper English comprehension and reading. It's not like It's a suprise another xbox will eventually be built and sold......

RUMOR! EVERYTHING is going to be digital! I use Steam. I have quite a few games from sales. But I don't own those games. I'll never own those games. I have a license to play those games, nothing more, nothing less. A license that can be revoked. Not to mention the requirement of an Internet connection, something I am not always privy to. No, I don't think I like this digital future. At all.
