Microsoft looking to make Skype default chat service - Report

CVG source claims the publisher has plans to consolidate "all their communications technology" around Skype; next-gen Xbox will reportedly see asynchronous voice and video messages.

A new report has surfaced, claiming to contain more details about Microsoft's proposed plans for the VoIP platform Skype, which the publisher acquired in 2011 for $8.5 billion.

The CVG report cites an anonymous source "familiar with the matter", who reportedly told the publication that Microsoft is planing to consolidate its communications technology around Skype in the near future, including implementing it as the default chat service on the next-generation Xbox console, as well as on PCs and tablets.

"You might jump to the conclusion that we'll see asynchronous voice and video messages in next-gen Xbox Live," the source told CVG.

Skype's applications currently run both on home PCs and mobile devices, and use a peer-to-peer network for voice and video traffic. The company was founded in 2003.

GameSpot has reached out to Microsoft for comment and will continue to update this story.

Just please let this mean you'll give the PC client a full reworking. I'd like it to be closer to the Windows Live Messenger client, that was a great client. Skype is ugly, clunky, and just generally not great in terms of actual softaware. It's great for communicating though, and being able to access Skype on a console would be pretty awesome. It was awesome when they switched XBL's voice over to be like Skype's, so I have confidence this'll be a good thing if it comes about. Seems highly unlikely it won't happen, all things considered. Why purchase Skype without plans to use it?

'asynchronous' odd term to choose, with several meanings....

my money is on this one;

3 (of two or more objects or events) not existing or happening at the same time.

It just means it'll be like messages were before, but they'll use Skype's back end stuff. Sort of like when they upgraded the voice on XBLA to mirror Skype.

Man, hearing of all these changes will make me miss the un complex Xbox 360.

Would make sense since it's a M$ service. I hope we'll see a Skype app on the PS3 as well. I know Skype is owned by M$, but they do their app on Apple devices and Android devices as well (even nintendo I think?). Still, I'm never gonna pay for this, and since I never paid for XBL Gold, I won't have access to Skype as well. It's one of the reasons why I buy pretty much all my games on the PS3 instead. You get all the stuff for free instead of paying non stop.

Ahhhhhh how I love you so Microsoft!! EXACTLY why Xbox has been destroying the playstation platform, thanks for a unified service that just keeps on giving.

@Salt_AU Better than Paying for a gold membership to use Skype on the xbox, while it's free on all other platform (like iOS, Android, Nintendo, etc). The top would be that the PS3 get the Skype app too, then PS3 users would get the app without the fees lol.

@Salt_AU wrong hell the ps2 and psp had voice chat in some of their games and if not all ps3 online games have voice chat just not everyone uses it and I would rather a few people use voice chat then have allot of people use voice chat and listening to all those annoying little kids insulting each other

makes sense to use skype.

1. They bought the company/patents

2. If reports are to be believed (no reason to think otherwise) the next xbox will ship with kenectic. Video chat is the next logical step for a system that ships with a camera

3. Handling chat, message systems though the system is a standard set this generation.

"LOL U NEED GOLD"

Oh, and look at all the money Sony has. Just extremely successful and profitable, investing it in their products to make it a much better experience than the competition has to offer.

Right, anyway, never used Skype before, but if I can video chat and do everything else at the same time, it sounds pretty awesome.

@queuing_for_PS4 People have no problems paying for a superior service, that was proven with the current gen, it will be no different with the next gen.

RainIsMyDrug
RainIsMyDrug

@Salt_AU @queuing_for_PS4 Keep telling yourself its superior.  I can see MS telling each other " Look at those fool, just cause they buy the service they automatically think its the best thing out there when in truth it just the same only we are making load of money off them."

Daemoroth
Daemoroth

@RainIsMyDrug @Salt_AU @queuing_for_PS4 Man, you guys fight over anything. Here's what I remember about Sony's "free" platform:

- Free everything service

- Can also install Linux

We all know how the Linux idea ended up post-launch. And should I introduce you to PS Plus? At least MS came out of the gate with their sub and didn't back out of promises made, so yeah, neither side has squeaky clean reps in this argument.

You as consumers have the ability to choose, so make your choice and let others make theirs.

@Salt_AU @queuing_for_PS4 but the thing is it isn't superior they are about equal and FWI pc is FAR BETTER than any of those services and it is FREE has well just because you are paying to play games online doesn't make it better

"next-gen Xbox will reportedly see asynchronous voice and video messages"

isn't that a step backwards?

If messages aren't synched with audio and video, they look terrible like, skype used to.

Consolidation of their platforms.  A fair enough goal.  Everyone keeps barking on about how Apple's devices talk to each other so well in the ecosystem.  MS is going after just that, with Xbox, Windows (& tablet), and Windows Phones.  I can't see much problem with that tbh.  Having all my contacts appear on Skype Xbox would be cool, plus the 360 always used Messenger.  Which is being turned off now.

I dont want to SKYPE my whole living room . Skype is fine for a phone or PC in front of your face but my home is private.. would be all echoes anyways..
